Fans banned from match

WTAF?!

https://news.sky.com/story/maccabi-tel-aviv-fans-will-not-be-allowed-to-attend-aston-villa-match-amid-safety-concerns-13451240

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans banned due to safety concerns AGAINST them?

Since when is it ok to victim blame and penalise people who have done nothing wrong? Surely the right course of action would be either to ban ALL fans of both sides or better police the event?

So are Jews not welcome at sports games now? Because some people are racist bullies?

I genuinely can’t believe this has been allowed. Where does it end? Can Jews no longer safely access society? What if the risk is high elsewhere, will they be banned then?

What do you think? AIBU to think this is discriminatory and a slippery slope?

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans will not be allowed to attend Aston Villa match amid safety concerns

Police say the decision is based partly on what happened in Amsterdam last year, when Israeli fans attending a match against Ajax were targets of antisemitic attacks.

The Tel Aviv football derby between Hapoel and Maccabi has been called off after rioting and “risks to human life”, Israeli police said.

The match was due to take place on Sunday night at Bloomfield Stadium, a ground the two sides share, as a home fixture for Hapoel.
Footage shared by the police shows projectiles and flares being thrown on to the pitch, as well as unrest outside the stadium.

The Israeli police said it had made nine arrests and brought 16 others in for questioning after the game was cancelled “following disturbances” and its officers had been injured in “serious violence”.

A statement posted on X said: “Disorderly conduct, riots, injured police officers and damage to infrastructure – this is not a soccer game, this is a breach of order and serious violence.

“We have notified the teams and the team’s management and the referees that it has decided not to allow the holding of the game at Bloomfield.
It added: “Dozens of smoke grenades and pyrotechnic devices were thrown, injuring 12 civilians and three police officers. Forces at the scene arrested nine suspects and detained 16 others for questioning.”

Yeah, Birmingham has the right to defend itself and protect it’s citizens against violence like this.

Millwall have played Tottenham once in the last 35 years, and there wasn't a riot.

A quick Google suggests otherwise. news.bbc.co.uk/hi/english/static/in_depth/programmes/2002/hooligans/diary/jul_aug.stm

I'm against all football hooliganism, but this isn't the reason MTA is being banned from Birmingham. It is because of the people of Birmingham.

Do you think the actions of the supporters in Tel Aviv today show that it may have also been about them and their behavior and not the "people of Birmingham"?

Ellen2shoes · 20/10/2025 00:57

They must be anti semitic

Ellen2shoes · 20/10/2025 01:13

Why else cancel?

Not going to lie I’m glad they have kicked off today because that means the 6th November will definitely be off and I was getting worried about that.
Don’t want anyone hurt and I feel sorry for the police having to deal with possible riots.

Great, let’s follow suit and cancel. I would rather we cancelled than selectively banned certain people frrom a single religion. Given the backdrop of anti semitism that is active atm I think that would be wise. It fixes the problem without discriminating,

Why should Aston Villa suffer because Macabbi currently have a hooliganism problem. This is not the first time in recent weeks thier fans have caused trouble, and also not the first time that travelling fans have been banned from attending a match.

Maybe it’s the thuggery that is following them round, that’s the problem.

Nobody is banning the religion, they are banning the fan base who are extremely problematic. Aston Villa and their fans have done nothing wrong, travel all over Europe peacefully and should not be penalised. I’m not even going to get into the fact that the match is of sporting importance because nobody who is so desperate for the MTA fans to attend actually gives a fuck about that.

Nestingbirds · 20/10/2025 10:20

All of the fan base are Jewish though, that is whole point, including the team.

Maybe it’s impossible to lkeep the team safe too in Birmingham. The best course of action is to cancel the match.
If the people in Birmingham can’t be trusted to behave cordially, then that’s is what will have to happen.

The police are more than capable of handling a few wayward fans! If the setting is so deeply racist and hostile well that’s another issue, and that’s a different matter entirely isn’t it. A problem that is much bigger than a singular football match that’s for sure…

Custardcream84 · 20/10/2025 10:31

stomachamelon · 19/10/2025 22:00

@Custardcream84there is no evidence they did that during the Ajax game. A very small group did the night before. There were far worse allegations against the ‘home’ fans and residents.
what other teams do you feel strongly about? Without googling tell me 3/4?

Millwall, lazio, Leeds, Galatasaray, Marseille fans have known to be violent.

England too - remember what they did at Wembley a few years back. Shameful. If any country wanted to ban any of them that’s their right.

I know plenty about football and hooliganism- as a brown female football fan it took me a long time to feel comfortable to go to a match and have been abused by England fans when I have been in the Wembley area after a game. I would think any logical person would agree it puts safety at risk to have a known racist and violent supporter base come to an area where many of the people that live there will be subject to their abuse.

funny that a couple of years ago a Polish team were banned from playing at Villa. West Ham fans were banned too from a European tie. It’s not a new thing.

Given not all Israeli's are Jewish, why are Maccabe fans all Jewish I wonder? Is it because whenever they've had an Arab player they've literally booked him, when they see a black player they make monkey noises. They are so disgustingly racist that their games are a no go zone for many in their country.

Being Jewish isn't a 'get away with being a racist thug' card. The fans have been banned from the UK because of their offensive behaviour. Being Jewish isn't a justification for this.

None of the above have been killed for being Jewish. It’s completely different. The reason this is so sensitive, and context is everything, is exactly because this country has an anti semitism issue at the moment. We absolutely must get behind the Jewish community and ensure they do not feel targeted and victimised.

I am sorry you too have been racially abused, it’s absolutely disgusting and it ALL needs stamping out. Football should have zero tolerance of any racial abuse, and I mean zero, if that means not a single game is played until it is achieved then so be it. Every single offender should be charged immediately.

Yeah let’s worry about the violent hooligans feelings that chant death to Arabs and sing songs about rape just because they’re Jewish.

Onmytod24 · 20/10/2025 11:00

The latest developments proved that the police advice was correct. Starmer should never try to overrule it. He’s got enough on his plate without interfering with local issues.

Everanewbie · 20/10/2025 11:05

Lets be honest here, local Gaza MPs and councillors have been trying their hardest to get the fixture cancelled as soon as it was announced. There is nothing objective about this decision.

Can you honestly say that Maccabi Tel Aviv fans are worse than Millwall? West Ham? The stabby AC Milan and Napoli ultras? The Fenerbahçe and Galatasaray fans? In Amsterdam the Maccabi fans were attacked and Jew hunted, god forbid they fight back. Like a microcosm of the war.

The official reason is about not being able to guarantee their safety, the subtext that the local muslim population wont be able to control themselves. If that is the case, that is where the problem lies.

Yeah, Birmingham has the right to defend itself and protect it’s citizens against violence like this.

Well that settles it - clearly Tel Aviv is full of anti-semites.

stomachamelon · 20/10/2025 12:05

@Custardcream84so you be leading the chorus for the banning of fans from premiere league clubs/ fixtures that bait over Hillsborough, the sectarian violence in Scotland when there is a derby? The personal attacks on players?
A very small proportion of their fans did that and they should be banned from travelling.

@Everanewbieyour post is bang on.

stomachamelon · 20/10/2025 12:07

My point being @Custardcream84they aren’t even in the top ten and their ultras could be banned.
It sends a message and at the moment the UK is not doing well on the antisemitism front.

Whenever someone on one of these threads says ‘people of Birmingham’ when being critical of the police decision, they’re conflating it with Muslims but it’s racist so they just hide behind ‘people of Birmingham’.

stomachamelon · 19/10/2025 21:56

They have hardly been ‘thrown under the bus’ it’s where Aston Villa play lol.
They could always play it at a neutral ground. There are huge amounts of teams (some in the uk) that have a far worse hooligan problem. Ban the ultras from travelling as part of the conditions of game being played?

Why should it be played at a neutral ground. That is unfair on the Villa fans, who have done nothing wrong.

With some clubs, it’s not just the so called Ultras that cause bother. You only need to see the videos from the Tel Aviv Derby where you have got fans in football shirts causing trouble.

On,y one way to deal with them - just ban them. Simple as that. Don’t care where they are from or what religion they are, they are not welcome. Fans get banned all the time when they misbehave.

stomachamelon · 20/10/2025 13:17

As long as it’s a level playing field and I do believe it’s not the Aston Villa fans that are the problem regarding safety. This has been stated and that’s why people are complaining.

Also if you read the articles about the derby the issue was with flares and there were less arrests than at an average premier league fixture aka you always have twats who don’t behave.

Some of the local councillors and MP’s have been gunning for this to be cancelled since it was announced. It is then disingenuous to say it’s about safety. It’s about them having the hump Israel and Israeli clubs aren’t banned from competition.

Of course it is. Exactly right. They don’t think Israel should participate or be welcome anywhere. That usually sits along side that Israel shouldn’t exist at all. Pure anti semitism dressed up as ‘concern for safety ‘ when clearly the police have dealt with far more challenging situations on a weekly basis.

I go back to the analogy that do we ban all Muslim men from every and any single area they have killed or maimed people ie concerts, planes, restaurants, airports etc?

No, because it would be wrong to clump a religious group altogether and punish them collectively. The same applies here. One or two disruptors should not mean not no Israeli supporter can come and support their team.

But then we know it isn’t about the Israelis and their behaviour, it is about the kind of ‘welcome’ they are going to receive in the local area, because its hugely pro Palestine area, and they are already setting up witch hunts on social media.

Biskieboo · 20/10/2025 13:26

Those poor Maccabi fans - they're not even safe from antisemitism stopping them watching football games against other Israeli teams in Israel! This is worse than we thought!
