Fans banned from match

WTAF?!

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans banned due to safety concerns AGAINST them?

Since when is it ok to victim blame and penalise people who have done nothing wrong? Surely the right course of action would be either to ban ALL fans of both sides or better police the event?

So are Jews not welcome at sports games now? Because some people are racist bullies?

I genuinely can’t believe this has been allowed. Where does it end? Can Jews no longer safely access society? What if the risk is high elsewhere, will they be banned then?

What do you think? AIBU to think this is discriminatory and a slippery slope?

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans will not be allowed to attend Aston Villa match amid safety concerns

Police say the decision is based partly on what happened in Amsterdam last year, when Israeli fans attending a match against Ajax were targets of antisemitic attacks.

These arent usual semantics. Thinking that Israel and Judaism is one and the same is very antisemitic. The Jewish people I know want nothing to do with the Israeli government. They'd want more to do with Israel if the Government changed to a better one.

Please don't put words in my mouth. Thanks.

I simply repeated what you’d already posted and asked if you had any further groups of people whose civil liberties you wanted to curtail.

There was certainly violence involving Maccabi fans in Amsterdam. Did you know that the Amsterdam police said the Maccabi fans were targeted, and the Mayor of Amsterdam described it as a "pogrom" against Jews?

Edited

Yes exactly - it created international shame and outrage globally.

TheGander · 17/10/2025 07:51

Nestingbirds · 17/10/2025 07:49

Really? So given the ‘demographic make up’ would it also be a good idea to insist you wear a burka and ban alcohol for example? So we can guarantee your safety?

No not at all but why mix two combustible elements? Birmingham shouldn’t have to put up with the inevitable damage that would ensue if the fans attended.

But I didn't post what you said I posted.

So you can’t answer the question. One can therefore assume that you agree with racism and violence as long as it’s coming from certain groups.

I don’t want the game called off because villa and their fans are peaceful and enjoy the Europe league experience. They were fabulous in the champions league in 24/25. As far as I’m aware, the MTA players are peaceful and turning up to do a job. It’s just one set of fans who have behaved like this. Therefore, the logical thing to do is to remove that set of fans from the stadium. That has happened in football for a long, long time. It’s the consequences of their actions.

Did you know that the Amsterdam police said the Maccabi fans were targeted, and the Mayor of Amsterdam described it as a "pogrom" against Jews?

bittertwisted · 17/10/2025 07:52

SunnySideDeepDown · 17/10/2025 07:36

If all that is true - which I believe by the way - then why isn’t the reasonable decision to bad ALL fans made? No fans = no risk, damage and most importantly no risk of Jews feeling discriminated against.

This is a critical moment in history where decisions today affect the future safety of Jews and Muslims in the future. Tensions are always high and these kind of decisions do nothing but promote antisemitism. I understand the multitude of risks at the match, so just ban all fans!

Posters keep coming back to “Jews aren’t banned, Maccabi fans are”.

Right… so if a group of orthodox Jewish men (ie visibly Jewish) went to the football match in Birmingham, would they feel safe? Would they be safe?

This IS about Jews and banning the Israeli team sends a strong message.

We need to be promoting peace now. Respecting Jews and Muslims. Promoting harmony and moving forwards to ensure all innocent civilians in every country are protected from harm.

This division is very dangerous and very telling.

Are you aware of the football team Tottenham?

Coatsoff42 · 17/10/2025 07:52

Is this not a great opportunity to flood Birmingham with police and arrest loads of vile men when they start trouble? Like a honey trap.

Did you know that they did that after Israel exerted extreme pressure on them to do so? Because they couldn’t just take responsibility for their fans actions?

But the vast majority of the Villa fans are peaceful and a sound lot. Their matches go on every weekend without trouble.

I am angry, actually. I am sick to death of everything being twisted to be antisemitism, undermining the actual definition of the word. Like many I was horrified by the attack in Manchester, which was actually motivated by antisemitism. Labelling every tiny thing as antisemitism because you don’t like it risks diluting the meaning of the word to a point that the genuine threats don’t get taken seriously.

im also sick of people trying to justify football hooliganism and related violence. I’m a woman who actually goes to football matches. Id quite like for that to stay as the peaceful, enjoyable experience it is, rather than people attempting to bring it back to the 70s and 80s.

You don’t get to decide what’s antisemitic. In the same way that you don’t get to decide what’s racist. These things are often nuanced and subtle.

I appreciate it suits some posters to deny it’s antisemitism, for reasons I can’t really understand, perhaps prejudice, perhaps ignorance, but we need to listen and be careful about the narrative that’s ahead of us.

If we want to live in a peaceful country, if we genuinely want peace for both sides in the Middle East, then we need to ensure BOTH Jews and Muslims are protected.

Protection here - both physically and ideologically - calls for an all out fan ban in my opinion.

Side note - please don’t speak angrily to me. This is a discussion and doesn’t need people to get personal or aggressive.

If you think the "elements" are that "combustible" surely the solution is for the match to be played behind closed doors, not for just one side and their fans to be penalised.

Firstly, banning people because they might attract violence is totally unacceptable. This is not the first example of Jewish people being told to stay away for their own safety. Women's organisations and feminist speakers will be familiar with having events cancelled on them because of threats of transactivists over the years, and with the feeling from some in society that somehow they are the ones in the wrong for being so awful and bigoted that they attract such vicious ire.

Secondly, you cannot constantly tell the public that Islamism isn't a problem in this country, particularly in places like Birmingham, but then arrange public life around Islamism being a problem in this country, particularly in places like Birmingham. Which is it? (Women will also be familiar with the sensation of being told it is bigoted or scaremongering to think of men as being violent but to simultaneously go out of their way to avoid male violence.)

Arab and black Maccabi players abused by ‘their own’ fans
Wikipedia reports that the New Israel Fund, a US-based NGO, made Maccabi Tel Aviv fans the second-most racist fans in Israel, behind another club, Beitar Jerusalem. The club’s fans are well known for yelling racist slurs and insults at Arab and black football players. Even players on their own team have often faced racist abuse from the team’s own fans. “Fans would yell anti-Arab slurs at Maharan Radi, an Arab player, and yell monkey noises at Baruch Dego, an Ethiopian-Jewish player.”

Wow, imagine being so racist that you can't stop yourself from racially abusing your own players. I can see why people are so desperate for them to come visit England.

I actually saw the events unfolding in real time, because I follow football - I’ve not just reacted to a headline now. I watched MTA fans smashing the place up, and then lo and behold a couple of days later the narrative has changed entirely.

Given the demographic makeup of Birmingham I think it’s just sensible.

What on earth does that mean? Are you suggesting that Muslims should dictate who is permitted to visit the city? That is literally mob rule and can’t possibly end well in the long run.

I support this because it's a curfew on men, and in general we need more of these, not fewer.

In many areas women are afraid to walk the streets at night and it's all the fault of men.

Speak for your own parenting, my sons are a danger to no woman

It’s disgusting. Similar to milwall back in the day.

for some reason milwall was vilified but people on here seem keen to defend racists and violent criminals. I can’t imagine why.
