Fans banned from match

WTAF?!

https://news.sky.com/story/maccabi-tel-aviv-fans-will-not-be-allowed-to-attend-aston-villa-match-amid-safety-concerns-13451240

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans banned due to safety concerns AGAINST them?

Since when is it ok to victim blame and penalise people who have done nothing wrong? Surely the right course of action would be either to ban ALL fans of both sides or better police the event?

So are Jews not welcome at sports games now? Because some people are racist bullies?

I genuinely can’t believe this has been allowed. Where does it end? Can Jews no longer safely access society? What if the risk is high elsewhere, will they be banned then?

What do you think? AIBU to think this is discriminatory and a slippery slope?

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans will not be allowed to attend Aston Villa match amid safety concerns

Police say the decision is based partly on what happened in Amsterdam last year, when Israeli fans attending a match against Ajax were targets of antisemitic attacks.

The thing is I’m engaging in a discourse.

she’s just getting angrier and angrier, ignoring the facts of the situation and not wanting to admit that she is perfectly fine with racism, as long as it comes from a certain group of people.

She doesn’t sound angry, you do a bit but you might not be.

I support this because it's a curfew on men, and in general we need more of these, not fewer.

In many areas women are afraid to walk the streets at night and it's all the fault of men.

So that’s Jews and men who aren’t allowed out. Any other groups you want to add to your list? How about anyone that isn’t like you? I can see that ending well.

NoOneToTextWhenThePlaneLands · 17/10/2025 07:38

Nestingbirds · 17/10/2025 07:35

You are twisting the narrative and you know it.

Why don’t you want the match called off? If you are so worried?

So you can’t answer the question. One can therefore assume that you agree with racism and violence as long as it’s coming from certain groups.

I don’t want the game called off because villa and their fans are peaceful and enjoy the Europe league experience. They were fabulous in the champions league in 24/25. As far as I’m aware, the MTA players are peaceful and turning up to do a job. It’s just one set of fans who have behaved like this. Therefore, the logical thing to do is to remove that set of fans from the stadium. That has happened in football for a long, long time. It’s the consequences of their actions.

Jews haven’t been banned from the game. There are no checks of religion of those attending.

MTA ultras who have a violent history have been banned. Or are you suggesting they should be allowed to come and smash the place up, because they’re Jewish?

Nestingbirds · 17/10/2025 07:40

NoOneToTextWhenThePlaneLands · 17/10/2025 07:35

You’re the one corrupting the truth. The bare facts of it are the MTA fans arrived in Amsterdam, organised “demonstrations” where they shouted racist slogans, chanted racist slogans during the match, and after the match they continued on their racist, violent rampage. The city of Amsterdam responded.

That is total fabrication.

I agree the Israeli fans were provocative with their chants (the same could be said for the other side) but that did NOT justify the violent witch hunt of cars being used to hit the fans, and the terrible scenes that followed,

The Jewish fans were targeted and injured, it was terrifying for them. Rescue planes were sent in. The Netherlands were mortified by the scenes and apologised profusely.

That is what happened.

An obscene orgy of violence against Jewish fans.

We will not stand for the same thing happening here. That’s for sure.

Stealth18 · 17/10/2025 07:35

The locals aren’t innocent bystanders. They are the ones who said they had an issue with MTA fans on ethical grounds. That’s what their petition was about. It also included a thinly veiled threat against the Israeli fans were they to attend.

You clearly have never been to Aston/Witton if you think that fans will spend all day disrupting the locals. It’s not an area that fans and certainly not away fans congregate in. Everyone stays in the city centre until near kick off.

The area is just about as lacking in diversity as imaginable. The MP spends more time talking about Gaza and Palestine than he does about anything linked to the UK.

I disagree, most people are innocent bystanders.

I am angry, actually. I am sick to death of everything being twisted to be antisemitism, undermining the actual definition of the word. Like many I was horrified by the attack in Manchester, which was actually motivated by antisemitism. Labelling every tiny thing as antisemitism because you don’t like it risks diluting the meaning of the word to a point that the genuine threats don’t get taken seriously.

im also sick of people trying to justify football hooliganism and related violence. I’m a woman who actually goes to football matches. Id quite like for that to stay as the peaceful, enjoyable experience it is, rather than people attempting to bring it back to the 70s and 80s.

Arab and black Maccabi players abused by ‘their own’ fans
Wikipedia reports that the New Israel Fund, a US-based NGO, made Maccabi Tel Aviv fans the second-most racist fans in Israel, behind another club, Beitar Jerusalem. The club’s fans are well known for yelling racist slurs and insults at Arab and black football players. Even players on their own team have often faced racist abuse from the team’s own fans. “Fans would yell anti-Arab slurs at Maharan Radi, an Arab player, and yell monkey noises at Baruch Dego, an Ethiopian-Jewish player.”

Bagwyllydiart · 17/10/2025 07:43

The game should be played behind closed doors and with no TV coverage. The significant loss of revenue will be the penalty of this decision.

You’ve missed out huge chunks of the story there though, haven’t you?

they werent merely “provocative”. They chanted pro genocide and racist chants. They “demonstrated” before the match. They chanted all through the match. After the match they continued their violence and went onto building sites, stealing equipment to use as weapons.

they attacked taxi drivers who were just working, and those taxi drivers then put out radio calls to ask other drivers to come and help, because they were scared.

it then descended into violence - which was wrong on both parts. But to act like the MTA fans were walking home peacefully and had cars driven at them is a completely misrepresentation designed to make it seem as if Amsterdam is an overly violent city with an antisemitism issue. The reality is, the MTA fans continually provoked people, acted violently and were met with violence. An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind. But this wasn’t an unprovoked attack on MTA fans purely because they’re Jewish.

That is because we have a big problem. You might not like the fact anti semitism is now a pressing issue but racism in all its forms needs to be stamped out.

That’s not how football works, and clearly you’ve never actually watched or followed football. Stadium bans are one of the most common punishments and tactics used to keep the peace.

do you feel the same about the old firm? Which has a blanket away fan ban in order to keep the peace?

I’m not denying there is antisemitism in the UK.

But can you not see how labelling every single thing you disagree with as antisemitism is actually harming your cause? I’ve been accused of being antisemitic because I said I wanted the bombing in Gaza to stop. Anything that is even a slight criticism of Israel is labelled as antisemitism. Members of the Israeli government called their OWN CITIZENS antisemitic because they dared to protest against the war.

antisemitism is an issue, but you can’t use it to shut down anything that comes close to critical discussion on Israel, their actions, and the acts of certain Israeli citizens.

@Livelovebehappy I’m not sure if you’re aware, but away fans don’t just hop off the train, go to the game, then go straight home afterwards. They go out in town, often get drunk, and if they’re nasty thugs, they look for fights, and things to damage. Are you saying that all the local Muslims should stay at home that day, just so a gang of fans with a history of violence can attend a football match?

There was certainly violence involving Maccabi fans in Amsterdam. Did you know that the Amsterdam police said the Maccabi fans were targeted, and the Mayor of Amsterdam described it as a "pogrom" against Jews?

but she is. She’s constantly minimised the acts of the MTA fans, stating they were just “provocative” in some chanting, when they were actually incredibly violent. She’s labelled a common decision in football as antisemitism and accused me multiple times of being antisemitic and a racist.

Given the demographic makeup of Birmingham I think it’s just sensible.

More importantly it's the fairest outcome for everyone who lives there who isn't interested in this football, nor of picking which side of brawling men to support, and who just want a peaceful Thursday afternoon and evening without male violence spilling into the streets.
