Fans banned from match

WTAF?!

https://news.sky.com/story/maccabi-tel-aviv-fans-will-not-be-allowed-to-attend-aston-villa-match-amid-safety-concerns-13451240

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans banned due to safety concerns AGAINST them?

Since when is it ok to victim blame and penalise people who have done nothing wrong? Surely the right course of action would be either to ban ALL fans of both sides or better police the event?

So are Jews not welcome at sports games now? Because some people are racist bullies?

I genuinely can’t believe this has been allowed. Where does it end? Can Jews no longer safely access society? What if the risk is high elsewhere, will they be banned then?

What do you think? AIBU to think this is discriminatory and a slippery slope?

Maccabi Tel Aviv fans will not be allowed to attend Aston Villa match amid safety concerns

Police say the decision is based partly on what happened in Amsterdam last year, when Israeli fans attending a match against Ajax were targets of antisemitic attacks.

It’s actually just Maccabi fans being punished for their poor behaviour in Amsterdam. Just because they’re Jewish doesn’t mean they can go on violent rampages.

There are two sides to every story and many believe they were targeted and harmed.

oh, please.

Do you follow football? The MTA fans ran riot in Amsterdam, through the city chanting anti-Arab slogans and destroying property that wasn’t theirs. Ajax fans and Amsterdam locals responded to defend their city. Or is it only certain people who have the right to defend themselves?

Bringemout · 17/10/2025 06:55

Oh come on all the chat was basically about how we can’t trust the people of Birmingham not to go on a Jew hunt. Jesus christ this is disgraceful.

People were prosecuted for organising groups to hunt Jews. There have been convictions and rightly so.

It’s anti-Semitic to ban football fans with a history of violence against Muslims from a football match with a lot of Muslim fans? Would you be saying the same if macabi banned fans with a history of anti semitism from their games?

There are other teams with fans who have a history of violence , they aren’t banned. Also the issue cited is that there may be demonstration s against the team - why not ban the demonstrations?

PurpleThistle7 · 17/10/2025 06:57

I think this is a very different situation to the other examples others posted. The announcement wasn’t about banning fans for their behaviour (fair enough, football hooligans are terrible people) but about banning them because the police cannot keep them safe in the city.

Someone on another thread said the next thing people could say is that it would be best if Jewish people all live in this one neighbourhood to assure their safety and I can’t stop thinking about that. These tropes are terrifying and it’s getting more and more frightening to live your life here in the uk as a Jewish person.

As I’ve said multiple times everywhere - the intent of these marches and mobs might be laudable, but the impact on the Jewish community has been devastating. I am so angry and sad all the time and this just feels like more proof that no one here wants me.

Bringemout · 17/10/2025 06:57

One of the Gaza MP’s is on twitter crowing about banning zionists. Jesus.

I don’t agree with them organising those groups. But that doesn’t mean that MTA fans have the right to travel all over the world destroying the cities they visit? You need to separate their identity from their actions. The fact they’re Jewish doesn’t give them impunity to act however they want to.

Turn it on its head. If an Arab team played a match in Europe, and their fans were incredibly violent afterwards - destroying property and chanting anti-western slogans as they did so, and then their fans were banned from another match, you wouldn’t be saying any of this.

Reading between the lines it’s very clear the MTA fans cannot be trusted and therefore their safety cannot be guaranteed.

They have been banned in the past, actually - take Heysel as an example. European teams regularly have fans banned for racism, homophobia or other such behaviour. The MTA fans cannot be trusted after their day out in Amsterdam.

It was in fact an anti semitic witch hunt and involved rescue flights sent in to rescue 2000 Jewish fans. The Dutch government were beyond mortified.

”Don’t agree”. If people were hunting muslims in the street and organising groups to do so I think we’d all be disgusted. Don’t agree is pretty fucking mild. Lets be honest they think the muslims are going to kick off. We need to be pushing against sectarianism and racism, if the fans need harsh policing so be it.

But we are descending into some seriously concerning behaviour and it is really concerning me.

The facts are as I posted them. Only Israeli fans could destroy property and chant racist slogans and paint it out to be some sort of viscous attack on them.

I think it’s deeply shameful that we can’t have foreign fans because our police can’t protect them from rabid racists. It’s an embarrassment and we should be deeply concerned about the MP who whipped this shit up too.

The foreign fans are the rabid racists.

i actually read that they’re worried about more Palestine protests getting out of control like this. I hope they have a plan to protect the athletes to avoid another Munich Olympics.

STOP lying and posting misinformation

I’m not lying.

“ first incidents were reported on Wednesday evening, the day before the match. Police say Maccabi fans tore a Palestinian flag down from the facade of a building and burned it, shouted “fuck you, Palestine”, and vandalised a taxi.
After a radio callout a number of taxi drivers converged on a casino on the nearby Max Euweplein, where about 400 Israeli supporters had gathered. Police dispersed the taxi drivers and escorted supporters out of the casino.
Verified social media videos show Maccabi fans setting off flares and fireworks and chanting in Hebrew “olé, olé, let the IDF [Israel Defense Forces] win, we will fuck the Arabs”. The Dutch national broadcaster NOS, other local media outlets and Amsterdam city hall officials also reported that fans chanted that there were “no children” left in Gaza.”

“There were further clashes on Thursday afternoon on the central Dam Square, where a large crowd of Maccabi supporters had gathered. Police said pro-Palestine demonstrators tried to reach the square. Two arrests were made.
Maccabi supporters were filmed chanting anti-Arab slogans on their way to the Johan Cruyff Arena. Police escorted the 2,600 fans to the game and dispersed protesters defying a ban on a pro-Palestinian demonstration outside the stadium.”

Footage has also emerged of Maccabi supporters close to Amsterdam central railway station setting off fireworks, chanting anti-Palestine slogans and taking iron scaffolding tubes and wooden planks from a building site to use as weapons. Other footage shows Maccabi fans running through the streets swinging belts.
Tensions remain: on Monday night, dozens of people carrying sticks and firecrackers set an empty tram on fire and smashed its windows in western Amsterdam. Footage showed many people on the square throwing fireworks, poles and wooden pallets.”

It was a national embarrassment for Amsterdam. The attacks were hit and run incidents on Israeli fans. Many were injured and missing. The Dutch government formally apologised and so did the King.

IF authorities are concerned for the safety of the visitors and fans here, for this match, they need to call the match OFF.
