What are Hamas playing at?

It’s deeply worrying that Hamas haven’t returned all the dead hostages as agreed. I’ve seen comments saying it’s an impossible task given how Gaza has been reduced to rubble. But if that’s the case, they would have known they had lost the bodies. So why did they agree to return them if they knew they weren’t able to do so?

I am staunchly pro-Palestinian. And no, I will not be silent now, we will keep going until Palestine is free and the occupation has ended. I'm shocked at how many of you are willing to defend what Israel has done. If there was no occupation, there would be no resistance. I am wondering if any of you have seen the harrowing testimonies of the Palestinian hostages that have been returned and the treatment they have suffered (kidnapped from Gaza without charge and held in prisons). You all need to wake up and see who the real terrorists of the world are.

I presume you mean you want the Palestinians to have the entirety of Israel, right? From the river to the sea? That means you support the ethnic cleansing of 7 million Jews from their ancestral homeland after thousands of years of exile and extermination. Or do you have some kind of belief that Palestine will be a democratic secular country with freedom of religion? I’m not sure what it is you’re supporting.

No need to shout. I agree with you. Its all grim. But I think some people here are talking about the practicalities of taking hostage / keeping / storing / identifying dead bodies in a war zone and you are getting yourself in a knot thinking we are defending or taking sides.

They have an extensive underground tunnel system with infrastructure. I’m not sure people understand the level of depravity we are talking about here.

Most of Gaza has no infrastructure (or food or fuel). They've managed to maintain it in the tunnels?

GoldThumb · 15/10/2025 12:48

crumpet · 15/10/2025 11:47

So why did they say they could and would return them? Why not say at the outset “we only have 4”?

I read Israel were expecting 10, maybe at a max 15, to be missing, so as far as they’re concerned, many are still unaccounted for, and they’re unsure why the rest of the bodies haven’t been returned to them.

So while they were not expected all to be returned, they were not expecting so few.

Sounds like typical Hamas bullshit to me, as they magically found several others later in the day.

I think the fact that one body is already not who they say it is means that its not so easy to so confidently say you know who it is you have stored away in some hot tunnel ready to be handed over. Any numbers or identification given are not going to be a hard truth.

Yes, they have. They managed to keep themselves and live hostages in the tunnels for two years, so what makes you think they wouldn't also be able to keep dead ones there?

That is one potential and very trusting explanation for them once again sending a Gazan body when they were meant to send an Israeli one, yes. Others are available.

Worth pointing out that last time Hamas did this was with Shiri Bibas. When coincidentally they were able to quickly return her actual body as soon as it was pointed out that they were breaching the ceasefire terms.

I would never condone what Hamas did two years ago, but I have to agree with you. I think the plan agreed last week was doomed to failure and it must surely have been obvious that it would not be possible to return all the bodies of the dead hostages by Monday. I think Trump and Netanyahu brokered this to get the living hostages back and to then have an excuse to resume the destruction of Gaza. Israel has already restricted aid and has already killed a number of Palestinians. I don’t see how this can ever end until the rest of the world stands up to Trump and and Israeli government, but that’s not going to happen.

I don’t understand why people were asked to take in Ukrainian women and children as soon as the war with Russia started, and were given incentives to do so, but there has never been a suggestion that we could be asked to do the same for Palestinian women and children from Gaza who are in a very very much worse position that any Ukrainian has ever been. Oh no, wait a minute, they aren’t allowed to leave the country even as refugees and have had to endure being displaced countless times when their homes have been obliterated and their families killed. 🙄🙄🙄

I also find it strange that what is going on in the West Bank is still being ignored. My son in law is Palestinian and was born in the West Bank. His family had their home and land taken by settlers when he was young and they fled to Jordan. People are still losing their homes today but the rest of the world still sits back and lets that happen, just as we’ve watched the destruction of Gaza for the last two years.

Excellent post and spot on

Because most of the dead hostages are probably buried under the rubble of the buildings that have been demolished, together with countless dead Palestinians.

Hoodedfinger · 15/10/2025 12:48

They've managed to maintain it somewhere, evidently. Hence the 7 bodies that have already been returned, at least 4 of whom have been dead since October 2023.

The focus on exactly how Hamas have achieved this, from multiple posters, is bemusing. Really all that matters at this point is that they demonstrably have.

Jujujudo · 15/10/2025 12:57

Statesider · 15/10/2025 12:12

I think it’s quite the trip when Israeli is mad that Hamas hasn’t given them all their dead hostages if they’re trapped under the rubble that ISRAEL created. What a joke. It doesn’t matter how hard Trump tries, this will never end because it simply boils down to a bunch of bad guys fighting another bunch of bad guys.

Wow, the mental gymnastics here are Olympic level! Hamas took the hostages. Somehow you’re managing to blame Israel? Wow.

Why 'most' and 'probably? I expect most of us wouldn't be surprised if some were, but I've seen no basis for being as specific as you are here.

I think you’re getting yourself wound up that everyone is defending Hamas they are simply saying some bodies might be hard to access because of the rubble. I imagine the bombs destroyed a lot of access, I doubt the have elaborate batman style bunkers, I doubt all of the tunnels were structurally sound.

Why would it not be ok to wonder how it is that they have done this given the pure destruction and devastation we have seen. I am certainly curious. Do they have underground morgues and cold rooms? Are they living in tunnels alongside dead bodies? Are the bodies in a state that would require DNA, forensics, dental records?

Why would they be there when they were hiding them in the tunnels? You think Hamas kidnapped dead people and then kept the dead bodies in their apartments? That's obviously not what they did, they would have hidden them in their purpose-built tunnels.

There may be a couple of hostages that died after being kidnapped, but most of them were already dead before they were forcibly removed from Israel by the terrorists who murdered them.

Yep. Unbelievable huh! They could have allowed civilians to use these tunnels during Israeli attacks but they chose not to because they believe in martyrdom.

Agree
surely the focus is exactly on how this can be achieved
To not do so is ridiculous.

It’s pure common sense to be realistic….. Gaza is in rubble

I said bemusing, and didn't use the word ok.

Because one, the people on this thread are not going to be able to answer much of that. And two, the fact that the Israelis are doing DNA tests has now been pointed out multiple times, so it's not like the people asking these questions are even paying attention.

So then it would be highly likely that Hamas dont know who they are holding hostage and whether they are releasing the correct said hostages. Its not like they have a register and a toe-tag.

It’s a waste of time even arguing to be honest. As I’ve said before, the truth is there, whether or not people choose to see it is their issue. It’s exhausting trying.

Because Israelis value life so much that they will release hundreds of convicted terrorists in Israeli jail for one dead Israeli body. That’s the difference between the two people. They kept the mutilated bodies of two little Israeli babies for over a year. Remember that one? They had this huge celebration when they handed their coffins over.

Is that why Israelis stood out outside a courtroom and chanted “Where is Ali? Ali’s dead,” and “Ali’s on the grill” at a bereaved grandfather in reference to a toddler who they burnt alive along with his parents in an arson attack? That's why they were laughing as they were chanting these disgusting things is it, because they value life so much?

Give it a rest with the Israelis value life so much more bollocks, 20000 dead kids later and no one believes this anymore.
