To now be increasingly concerned about illegal boat arrivals

1000 replies

CalmShaker · 14/10/2025 21:33

I've kept a level head with boat crossing arrivals but recently I've become concerned that there are some really unpleasant people being let in. This story was hard to watch on the news this evening;

Asylum seeker 'murdered hotel worker Rhiannon Whyte in frenzied attack' - BBC News https://share.google/qxzed2MD19TYPKasQ

I welcome genuine asylum but I don't believe that is what is happening anymore.
The story immediately before the above on national news this evening was the migrant who had threatened Nigel Farrage. I know Nigel is not the most popular of people but the migrant was horrid, clearly dangerous and not safe to be on our streets.
Financial cost and all other factors aside, it's the safety aspect that worry me most.

@SwiftRecourse and no I don’t fill out forms for people. But “coaching” people and helping people fill out forms correctly with all the necessary detail that is required are two different things, the first is completely unethical and against policy and the second is someone doing their job:

Of all the people that you could criticise who are involved in some way with asylum seekers - and I can think of an awful lot of people who make money from others people’s misery; the accommodation providers; the legal firms. But the low paid front line staff are certainly not the ones to blame.

I dont know if it’s naïve, I think it’s realistic personally. people have always migrated (including Brits) and people have no doubt always complained and been afraid of ‘others’

I'm not afraid of "others." My life is full of so-called "others," including my DH.

I'm afraid of a very specific type of person, for very good reason, and this thread is about identifying and dealing with them in a rational way.

Do you think we should have borders, if so why?

Almost 20% of the UK’s current population was born abroad.

Almost 50% of children are born to a non-British mother.

Thats a huge change to 30 years ago, let alone the rest of history.

Some migration is necessary and a positive thing - but UK immigration is at record levels and that is changing the country, and I think questioning it is fine. 99% of countries do the same…!

There is definitely a whole industry around visa applications, as I know from bitter experience with my DH. Without wishing to share our own personal details, it's become clear that there are big money-spinning organisations set up to facilitate non-standard (but not what should be straightforward) applications.

@sunflower1022 you're the poster in Germany, right? I've seen some shocking changes between when I first visited and now. I remember how incredibly safe Berlin felt in the early 2000s, I'd see lots of women out alone at night.

Yes, I’m German but I have lived in England for the past eleven years (my husband is British).

But you are not wrong; I am originally from a relatively small town in North Rhine-Westphalia but when my husband and I went back in spring we did a bit of a road trip and it was honestly shocking to see the difference.

You make money out of the asylum "industry".

I am an "other". I know people will accuse me of hypocrisy but I came here legally on a highly skilled work visa, I've paid paid huge amounts of tax for many years, never commited a crime, and am completely integrated, my husband is British and I've also naturalised.
I feel welcoming towards other immigrants who wish to come here and work hard and appreciate the opportunity, although I totally agree that current levels are way too high. No-one needs to be given a visa to work in a kebab shop ffs.

DaisyDeee · 25/10/2025 19:48

Goldeh · 14/10/2025 21:49

There's absolutely no evidence that asylum seekers and immigrants are more likely to engage in criminal activity than British citizens (quite the opposite in fact).

And you do know they get checked and better as part of their application, don't you? They don't just step off a boat and get ushered into their free mansion. Their details are taken, biometric data collected, interviews conducted, background checks run, etc. Your claim about lack of background checks is disingenuous at best.

I certainly don’t subscribe to the belief that asylum seekers = bad and a danger to women. BUT I think you may be overly confident about the level of checks that are done. It used to be the case that all applicants were scrutinised and had to undergo rigorous interviews/ background checks etc. but the numbers arriving over the last few years has meant the Home Office has significantly ‘streamlined’ the process and now rely on a relatively brief questionnaire. The result being that over 90% of applications are successful. And even those that are declined don’t get detained and deported; just given notice to leave their Home Office accommodation and are free to disappear into society.

I am not saying it shouldn’t be questioned or controlled (which is alot easy to say than to do) In fact I haven’t given a personal opinion on how I feel about immigration at all .I am saying it was ever thus. People aspire to a better life.

Beachtastic · 25/10/2025 19:58

Oh but the screening process is thorough!! DH had to answer these recently, along with "Have you ever met your wife?"

I think we can all sleep peacefully in our beds knowing that the right questions are being asked 🤡

No.

Awful is a young mother being stabbed twenty odd times in the head with a screwdriver and a five year old spending the rest of his life missing her.

And there are many other cases.

As you were.

Err…. Obviously. I did not say it wasn’t. But you lot on here are using it as a reason to bash ALL asylum seekers, and that isn’t fair.

You may as well all be closet racist and xenophobes. Bet you’re all voting Reform in the next election as well 🙄

Most people on here think the only people who rape or murder are “foreigners” - shameful and you need to give your heads a wobble and maybe check other stories for balance… but of course it won’t fit your agenda.

Show me a post on here that has ‘bashed ALL asylum seekers’.

All people have said that letting in hordes of undocumented males is not helping to make this country feel safe for women and girls.

You can eye roll and pull the Reform card all you want.

I campaigned for a local hotel to be used for immigrants. But my personal experience taught me to be more cautious. HTH

Are you capable of actually discussing this? Or are you completely dependent on emotive insults as your only means of communication?

Exactly.

It’s the same old method; throw around insults and shut down communication.

Calling people racists/ bigots etc to shut down conversation doesn’t wash anymore.

The jig is up.
