What would you do if you were given £50k?

I’ve been daydreaming about winning the lottery and wondered what you would do with £50k? It obviously isn’t enough to retire on, so what would you do with it?

I think I would deposit a chunk into my S&S ISA, put some into my SIPP. Then, I’d top up my Emergency Fund and book some once in a lifetime trips.

Won the cash call. Did exactly this. x

Half in premium bonds then take family to Eurodisney for a few nights.

newusernamex1000 · 16/10/2025 09:25

Learn to drive, buy a cheap car, fill the food cupboards, and out the heating on.

NestEmptying · 16/10/2025 09:42

Stick it in a savings account and use it to overpay on the mortgage. I would have it paid off in 5 years.

PeonyPatch · 08/12/2025 17:40

First and foremost, I’d clear all debts while holidaying in the Seychelles or French Polynesia.

I would then gift a large sum of money to my mother.

I would invest a large chunk of it too.

I’d then buy my DH and I our dream house in dream location.

I would set up a charity - something rescue or rehabilitation based for animals, support animals. Have my own dog grooming or dog boarding service. Either that or start my own business… but in something that I’d enjoy and gain purpose from.

edit: ooops, sorry didn’t read post properly - thought it would be £150 mil!

With £50k I’d go on a holiday, learn to dive and clear debt/put towards mortgage.

GasPanic · 08/12/2025 17:55

Go on the Orient Express.

Float in a bath of champagne.

Get a first class flight for a shopping binge in New York and stay in a 5* hotel.

Get one of those cats with the spots to chase off my neighbours cats.

Pay off my debts

Put a deposit on a house

KilliMonjaro · 08/12/2025 17:57

Pay off some of my mortgage!

DarkForces · 08/12/2025 17:58

New car and a fabulous holiday!

KurtCobainLover · 08/12/2025 18:00

I’d pay off my debts, have a holiday and then live off the rest for a couple of years (I’m on UC which would quite rightly stop).

ObsidianTree · 08/12/2025 19:05

It's not enough to pay off mortgage or make a dent in it, so i'd pay off my cc bill, get garage converted into an office/2nd reception room, bathroom done, kitchen if there is money left. Stick rest in kids savings.

It wouldn't be life changing money but could do a lot of needed things with it.

Blanketenvy · 08/12/2025 20:12

Take a career break from work to try and get on top of all my stupid health problems that are making it impossible to be in work currently. Really I need to be paying off some mortgage and saving but the present situation is unsustainable

notquiteruralbliss · 08/12/2025 20:38

Given all the rain were having I'd put a nice area of hardstanding in my field

Uuyti · 08/12/2025 20:40

Just pay off debts, nothing exciting sadly!

Rainbowcat77 · 08/12/2025 20:50

Pay my mortgage off £30k, put some money in my ds’ university pot then treat the two of us to a holiday to visit our relatives in Australia.

MeridaBrave · 08/12/2025 20:52

I just got that as redundancy money (and found a new job straight away). I put whole lot into my pension, will get the tax back also… so more like £100k boost to pension. Very boring I know. I did spend £700 on a gym photoshoot and £300 on new work clothes.

mightneedalargesnifter · 08/12/2025 21:02

I’d give some to DC. Go see my son in the States. Help the local youth theatre out. Treat DH and save what’s left .

OhDear111 · 08/12/2025 21:04

Depends where you are in life. I had this amount 1 year ago and bought a car and booked a very good holiday.

WhosMadeline · 09/12/2025 09:20

Clear some debts £10k
Sort out rising damp in one wall and repairs afterwards £?
Decorator to paint inside most of house £?
Some into premium bonds for the excitement
Chunk off mortgage

mondaytosunday · 09/12/2025 09:23

Pay off part of mortgage, redo my son’s kitchen which is in a poor state.

purplehearts21 · 09/12/2025 09:27

New bathroom and kitchen and a holiday too American with the family

Teacakesfortwo · 09/12/2025 09:39

Save it for uni costs. We have 9 years to pay for at more than £5k per year.

brunettemic · 09/12/2025 09:44

I think the first thing is probably realise that £50k, whilst being a lot of money, isn’t as much as I’d hoped it would be.

Then I’d book Disney again and do something with the rest to invest/pension/mortgage/kids uni fund.

whatsnewpussycat34 · 09/12/2025 09:53

£20k off the mortgage, £10k to my sister, a family holiday and the rest in savings.

ContentedAlpaca · 09/12/2025 09:55

Put some away for when our 16 and 10 year old cars need replacing.
Family holiday.
Buffer for the kids at uni.
And if it had been won, a little treat for our wider family plus a few close friends.
