What would you do if you were given £50k?

I’ve been daydreaming about winning the lottery and wondered what you would do with £50k? It obviously isn’t enough to retire on, so what would you do with it?

I think I would deposit a chunk into my S&S ISA, put some into my SIPP. Then, I’d top up my Emergency Fund and book some once in a lifetime trips.

Help my DC out and family. Pay for a weekend break for everyone at Centre parcs.

Top up our bank account with the leftovers!

TorroFerney · 14/10/2025 15:17

Buy some golden goose trainers and put the rest in the bank.

honestly I will be receiving about 60k by this Friday. I will treat my mum to a spa night away. The rest will just go into savings. It’s not enough to justify spending it willy nilly tbh. I like to know I have ample there for future emergencies. That’s not to say I won’t buy myself a treat here or there if I see something nice but I couldn’t justify blowing it on cars and holidays. But we are very secure financially anyway so u suppose I’m skewed a bit.

Edited

Snap well apart from treating my mum!

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 14/10/2025 15:18

New bathroom, new windows and if it’ll stretch that far, new carpets.

tartyflette · 14/10/2025 14:02

I donkt need it. So I'd give it to DC to add to their savings for a house purchase.

so you do need it....

nice of you to tell us

MadameSzyszkoBohusz · 14/10/2025 15:20

Oh, actually, I’ll prioritise the lense replacement surgery I need over the new windows. Not much point in new windows if I can barely see out of them!

AhBiscuits · 14/10/2025 15:22

I'd put it towards house deposits for the children too.

amilliondreamsofsleep · 14/10/2025 15:24

£40k off the mortgage. £10k for house improvements

paulhollywoodshairgel · 14/10/2025 16:02

Pay off debt. New car. Rest in savings for kids.

iamthehotstepper · 14/10/2025 16:07

Resign. Not quite old enough to give up work, but I hate my job, an I'd either take a year off, or get a lower stress part time job instead and use it to bump up my earnings and still pay my share of the mortgage and bills.

longtompot · 14/10/2025 16:07

I would sort out my dds downstairs bedroom and workspace so she has more room and it's warm and put in a downstairs shower room that is wheelchair accessible

Go on a holiday at least! Life’s about memories!

cinquanta · 14/10/2025 16:12

Buy a couple of newer cars. Both of ours are getting on a bit and it’s starting to show.

HeyThereDelila · 14/10/2025 16:13

Put it against the mortgage. A bit dull, but our mortgage is huge and doing this now would save us in the longer term.

cupfinalchaos · 14/10/2025 16:13

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 14/10/2025 14:03

I'd buy a couple of freddos and a bottle of olive oil. If there's any change I'd put it in savings.

😂So true.

Nothungrycat · 14/10/2025 16:16

Got a slightly smaller amount recently (inheritance). I'm lucky enough not to have a mortgage any more, don't have any other debt and the pension pot is ok. I'm splitting it three ways - a big chunk so I can afford a few really good holidays, a second chunk towards my next (second hand) car, and a smaller amount, say £5,000, on items that will enhance my life but which I don't really need. Such as a better bike and a sofa that doesn't sag in the middle! Most of it will sit in ISAs/saving bonds until needed, so that if the roof on the house starts leaking before the car keels over, I can spend money on that instead.

I’m just back from a holiday 😅 we have another booked for February. 😆

StrictlyAFemaleFemale · 14/10/2025 16:18

We're renovating a house and doing quite a lot of it ourselves. I'd pay some professionals to come in and do it better and quicker.

Honestly, I’d probably blow a bit of it on books. There’s this cozy mystery dog series I’ve been hooked on — 10-book box set, pure escapism!

Adelle79360 · 14/10/2025 23:12

I’d put it into premium bonds so I had the whole £50k limit and hope that I’d win something most months to help pay more than the minimum each month on my debt (approx £8.5k on interest free).

DirtyBird · 14/10/2025 23:59

10k for a new roof, about 5k for other house repairs. Maybe put the rest on the mortgage, if not put it into savings.

Buy a house.

MarketSt · 15/10/2025 00:08

I’m a little confused OP with your spending of it.

Surely after all your various savings pots you won’t have any left for big trips?

Travel is ridiculously expensive now.

Moru · 15/10/2025 00:15

I’ve name changed for this but I’m about to receive £75k in inheritance well preinheritance from my grandmother. I’m getting a bread reduction and lift. The rest will go to my mortgage so my monthly outgoings are lower. I’m very lucky in this regard but I’ve had a hellish decade ( husband’s illness). Toying with the idea of a holiday.
