To believe we can retire the word "shagging"?

243 replies

ReplacementBusService · 13/10/2025 22:07

I was a teenager in the 90s, and the word for casual, semi casual, or run of the mill sexual congress was "shag", as in "shagging" "have a shag", "quick shag", and "shagged em".

I just think, this word has had its day. It has connotations with vintage rugs, thick carpets, unruly beards, and perhaps panting sheepdogs, that are uncomfortable. Other words exist. I don't want to be the self declared Word Police, and appreciate there will be other points of view on this very important topic, but please can we all consider never using it again?

"Pumping"?

Nooo 😂

OrangeTatin · 13/10/2025 23:24

Sexy time.

Endofyear · 13/10/2025 23:27

Ah no, I love shagging! Maybe it's my age but 'fancy a shag' always makes me smile 😂

So many unsexy words for fucking

Shagging = Austin Powers
Banging = The Sweeney
Rogering = up the arse as far as I'm concerned so excluding
Screwing = Abigail's Party
Boffing = To the Manor Born
Humping = Dogs and small animals do this
Boning = Nasty
Making love = Barry Manilow
Getting Freaky = Ridiculous unless you are a grammy winning rapper

I favour fucking. I don't think it's that rude any more and it doesn't conjur up anything other than good, sweaty, sex.

Shagging around was way before Austen Powers used it

TurquoiseDress · 13/10/2025 23:29

Ha ha shagging is so 90s!

Bonking reminds me of Four weddings and a funeral!

DisturbedSleep · 13/10/2025 23:29

Romping?

FenceBooksCycle · 13/10/2025 23:31

Yabu. If I fancy a quick shag, or a beautifully and intensely satisfying shag that lasts a good long while, and I have an appropriate partner at hand for the purpose, I darn well shall.

🤣 yeah I did say "if" though. I cannot claim it happens with any great frequency. The point is that if it does, and perhaps it may, then the verb in question shall indeed be "to shag". I don't want it to be fuck or screw or bang or bone or any of the other options. Shagging is enjoyable.

I don't know if it's just my own perception but a lot of these other words very much resonate mentally like a word for an action that a man does to a passive recipient, but shagging has more connotations of a mutual activity with two equal participants. Does that ring true for anyone?

Funnywonder · 13/10/2025 23:47

We called it riding or bonking or humping when I was younger😅 Attractive boys/men were referred to as ‘a ride’.

@tj6767

I hope you ride with jodhpurs on

Then we'd be back in Jilly Cooper territory so it would be rutting and bonking

Derry Girls (as well as being an absolute blinder of a series) is where you can find out exactly what - or who - is a ride 😁

Sugarnspicenallthingsnaice · 13/10/2025 23:53

I was also a teenager in the 90s and 'shagging' is still one of my first choices to describe the act, but as an Aussie I'm also partial to 'rooting'.

OnlyOneAdda · 13/10/2025 23:53

@tj6767

shag is like in freshers week of uni

🤣🤣🤣

JacquesHarlow · 13/10/2025 23:54

The biggest reason why I wholeheartedly agree with the OP @ReplacementBusService can be found in the entirety of this thread, and throughout most of Mumsnet.

There's this weird pervasive thing on Mumsnet that any description of sex HAS to be accompanied with knowing humour. As if no British self-respecting woman (I am British and female btw) could really abandon herself mentally in the act, or be ardent about why sex makes them feel amazing, etc.

Nope. Instead you have to find a way to talk about it in the most bawdry way possible, as if sex is really something silly and to be referred to in the quickest, most dismissive way you can describe. We really are a weird, insecure nation when it comes to sex.

Hence, "shagging" will always win on here. Because as a word and with its 90s connotations, it fits the description and the demographic here, so absolutely perfectly.

PennyPugwash · 13/10/2025 23:58

us Irish say “riding” and I love it 🤣🤣🤣

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 14/10/2025 00:01

A bit off-topic, but do people still use the term 'One-night-stand'? I've not heard that in forever but I don't know what the alternative phrase would be!

TooBigForMyBoots · 14/10/2025 00:03

OnlyOneAdda · 13/10/2025 23:01

lol - fucking love this thread

I love the Irish's use of "riding" (or more accurately "ridin"

Particularly love that is can also be a subject - "he's a right ride"

I'm Irish and came on to propose "ride", as in "Why's Toobig a grumpy fucker? When did she last have a ride? Ah for fucks sake is it any wonder."<<sad faces all round>>

Belshels · 14/10/2025 00:07

Or a bit of "how's yer father" 😂

OSTMusTisNT · 14/10/2025 00:15

God no, I'm Scottish and there's no way you're removing that from our vocabulary 😂!

We have many words for poop e.g jobby, keech, shite, khaki, turd or 9-coiler etc but nothing is suitably synonymous with shagging.
