To believe we can retire the word "shagging"?

ReplacementBusService · 13/10/2025 22:07

I was a teenager in the 90s, and the word for casual, semi casual, or run of the mill sexual congress was "shag", as in "shagging" "have a shag", "quick shag", and "shagged em".

I just think, this word has had its day. It has connotations with vintage rugs, thick carpets, unruly beards, and perhaps panting sheepdogs, that are uncomfortable. Other words exist. I don't want to be the self declared Word Police, and appreciate there will be other points of view on this very important topic, but please can we all consider never using it again?

I mean 5 minutes of porn star style and volume moaning regularly rather than rarely probably going to get a few knocks on your door when the simple answer is close the window or bite a pillow.

Since you know the issue is the window being open your really doing it purpose.

Not to this Englishwoman. (SE).

Both are acceptable

I think it is, but it shouldn't be. Couples snogging and slathering all over each other in public is attention seeking and pathetic. Unless they're 14. Couples do this so everyone knows they're 'at it.' 🙄 Probably scream like banshees when they're shagging too. Again, attention seeking.

I mean it’s better than ‘doing the deed’ or ‘rutting’. I worked with some Aussies who all call it rooting which is horrific.

Nothing wrong with a little shag.

Indeed there isn’t.

The trouble is there's no obvious replacement. Fucking is too crude, lovemaking is too twee. So shagging it is, I'm afraid.

Bonking.

OnlyOneAdda · 13/10/2025 23:01

lol - fucking love this thread

I love the Irish's use of "riding" (or more accurately "ridin"

Particularly love that is can also be a subject - "he's a right ride"

Thanks! Although as a (retired) OU student who's had REFERENCING beaten in to me, I'd like to know the AI sources for that table.

Google gave me: "I read somewhere that the actor Bruce Willis first coined the expression boink in the TV series Moonlighting. Is it true? I'm positive I was "boinking" and "boinked" in the early 80s, but not in the 70s because I was only a child."

(Sorry it's not proper Harvard referencing: https://english.stackexchange.com/questions/197514/when-did-people-start-boinking)

When did people start "boinking"?

Is "boinking" an onomatopoeic and/or a blend word? I would have said so, I believe the word boink refers to the sound of the mattress springs squeaking under the weight of a couple making...

Piknik · 13/10/2025 23:05

So many unsexy words for fucking

Shagging = Austin Powers
Banging = The Sweeney
Rogering = up the arse as far as I'm concerned so excluding
Screwing = Abigail's Party
Boffing = To the Manor Born
Humping = Dogs and small animals do this
Boning = Nasty
Making love = Barry Manilow
Getting Freaky = Ridiculous unless you are a grammy winning rapper

I favour fucking. I don't think it's that rude any more and it doesn't conjur up anything other than good, sweaty, sex.

Nice to hear “having it off” on this thread, hadn’t heard that for a while. Might ask DH if he fancies having it off later.

I do like shagging though… don’t think it’s ready for retirement just yet.

What about “a bit of how’s your father”?

CrystalSingerFan · 13/10/2025 23:10

ErrolTheDragon · 13/10/2025 23:00

Indeed there isn’t.

And from Christopher Isherwood no less (and to my surprise), here's a verse:

The common cormorant or shag
Lays eggs inside a paper bag
The reason you will see no doubt
It is to keep the lightning out
But what these unobservant birds
Have never noticed is that herds
Of wandering bears may come with buns
And steal the bags to hold the crumbs.

Bonking? 😂

a decade older than shagging 🤣

Fionasapples · 13/10/2025 23:15

It was the popular word when I was at school in the 70s too so it's been around a long time. I can't see it going anywhere soon. I remember when Scooby Doo was first on tv and everyone was hysterical at Shaggy's name.

It means you’re not allowed to go swimming.

Also applies to ducking, bombing, and the worst of them all, running.

AutumnCosy2025 · 13/10/2025 23:20

You can ask.

but 'No' won't be 'retiring' it. It's the only word that will do in some circumstances.
