To believe we can retire the word "shagging"?

ReplacementBusService · 13/10/2025 22:07

I was a teenager in the 90s, and the word for casual, semi casual, or run of the mill sexual congress was "shag", as in "shagging" "have a shag", "quick shag", and "shagged em".

I just think, this word has had its day. It has connotations with vintage rugs, thick carpets, unruly beards, and perhaps panting sheepdogs, that are uncomfortable. Other words exist. I don't want to be the self declared Word Police, and appreciate there will be other points of view on this very important topic, but please can we all consider never using it again?

I’m surprised no one has yet nominated “Rumpy Pumpy” as the preferred term!

Justastupidgirl · 13/10/2025 22:31

I tend to use the verb 'to bang' day to day, but I'm not in favour of retiring the word shagging. I like it.

"Pumping"?

Pumping = farting 😂🤭
Shaggy and Scooby
It's all just words.
@ReplacementBusService - choose to use or retire anyone of them - nobody can give or refuse you permission 🤔

Perhaps we should bring “bonk” out of retirement.

I’d be in favour of this. I don’t have to own a horse though do I?

In memory of Jilly Cooper and her “bonkbusters”

I'm hoping for a return to the romance of 'Hide the sausage'

Swiving.

Definitely deserves a revival.

CryOverSpilledIrnBru · 13/10/2025 22:34

Could not agree more OP.

I couldn't even get to the 20 minute mark on Dan Snow's History Hit podcast episode on medieval sex, as medieval historian Dr. Eleanor Janega who joins him (and does most of the talking) on this episode used the shag word more times than I could cope with.

She's American, and I wondered why she was so fixated on that particular term. Maybe she thinks it's quintessentially British. I might have imagined it, but I felt that Dan Snow was cringing throughout as much as I. Just awful.

Negligent of you all for not having mentioned ‘bouncy cuddles’ yet.

I did not know of this! It’s my new favourite!

SwedishEdith · 13/10/2025 22:38

Nah, it's a great word. Can't think of any suitable replacement. We used to say "Sleeping with / Slept with" - ha ha, they sound so twee now 😄

Gross sounding word to me, but to be fair I’m ESL. I never use it and probably never will.

BuffaloBill15 · 13/10/2025 22:39

Snogging each others faces off, and feeling each other up!

Shutuptrevor · 13/10/2025 22:39

Shagging is by far the best/easiest way to refer to it!
