Where have the houmous lids gone??

Has anyone else noticed that some supermarkets have stopped including the plastic lid on houmous tubs, meaning that once you’ve removed the seal, it’s just footloose and fancy free if you don’t happen to finish it all in one go??

I take a tub in the car for DC to have with breadsticks on the way back from school or often include it in picnics. We usually don’t use it all in one sitting (and definitely not when it’s part of the aforementioned after school snack), but now there’s no way of nicely covering it back up so it stays fresh and doesn’t end up smeared all over my car’s upholstery

I noticed Sainsbury’s were first to let it go, and now Asda. Anyone else mildly irritated by this?!

YABU - it’s better this way
YANBU - bring back the houmous lid

Yes, it's infuriating if you're on the go and not at home to put it in a container

noworklifebalance · 13/10/2025 15:29

Yes and it’s annoying - I presume it is in a bid to reduce plastic waste, although I think the lids are more recyclable than the plastic film they now how.
They also render the plastic pots useless for storage.

Talipesmum · 13/10/2025 15:33

Yeah it’s really annoying. We get the Sabra hummus now as it still comes with a lid. And I’ve hoarded a couple of lids from other compatible hummus tubs from other shops. Been like this for a while now. Or, we don’t fully peel off the annoying flappy bit of plastic, and keep putting it carefully back in cardboard sleeve.

Teenagerantruns · 13/10/2025 15:34

They have left with the coleslaw lids, so annoying no one eats a tub of coleslaw in one go...

TheBlueHotel · 13/10/2025 15:35

Lidl still have them

AnonKat · 13/10/2025 15:37

Its annoying. I end up putting it in a sealable container, as i dont eat it that quick.

Clue’s in the name 😁

Peridoteage · 13/10/2025 15:38

What annoys me is its because of plastic packaging tax. Its done by weight, so the stupid supermarkets are busy replacing sturdier recyclable plastic packaging (lids, plastic trays etc) with thinner non recyclable films.

So its actually not achieving what its supposed to...

If they can manage to sell ice cream in lidded cardboard tubs can't they manage it with hummous?

tobee · 13/10/2025 15:41

It's like this with loads of items; salsa, guacamole etc. It's incredibly annoying. Especially if you're having a picnic.

Related to a ruling where people haven't really thought it through?

WaneyEdge · 13/10/2025 15:42

I don’t eat hummus but Lidl and Holy Moly have done it with their tubs of smashed avocado. So annoying, you get one use then it’s turned to grey mush. It might be OK to eat but looks bloody unappetising.🤢

Yeah that one and the Moorish ones are great, but also twice the price of the “normal” ones. It solved the much contested mumsnet-tastic “which hummus do my teens prefer” argument, one liking the sabra and one liking the own brand. Lids won!

Nellieinthebarn · 13/10/2025 15:45

I have noticed it with the big tubs of yogurt, but only the cheaper ones, so I suppose its fair. Its very annoying though.

SquigglePigs · 13/10/2025 15:46

Most big pot yogurts are the same now too. I have a fair few reusable lids now for that. Can see how it's annoying if you're out and about though.

Are there really people that don't eat it all in one go?! what's wrong with them!!!

zipadeedodah · 13/10/2025 15:52

Yeah it's really fucking annoying. I guess a lid is more expensive for the manufacturer than a bit of flimsy plastic covering.

secureyourbook · 13/10/2025 15:52

Same place as the yoghurt lids. It’s so annoying when you have a large pot that you’re not going to eat all at once.

Actually in Morrisons the other day I saw a HUGE cardboard tub of hummus - it looked like a gallon of ice cream!

I was tempted.

WeNeedToTalkAboutIT · 13/10/2025 15:57

Don't you keep the cardboard sleeve? I just peel back but not off the film, and then that can go back over and slotted inside the cardboard sleeve, even if a corner of it broke. I actually thought it was a good idea to stop doing the lids, they used to break all the time anyway

DominosForDinner · 13/10/2025 15:58

Do we expect shops to design packaging just in case someone happens to be having a picnic… surely that’s a small minority of purchases 😂

I remember when everyone moaned and moaned about being expected to take their own bags to the supermarket. And then … we all just got used to it.

HannahHamptonsGloves · 13/10/2025 16:03

You've just inspired me to order some of these https://www.amazon.co.uk/Lids-Supermarket-Silicone-Guacamole-Dishwasher/dp/B0FD9VBJL7/

churrios · 13/10/2025 16:35

I’ve changed to Ramona’s has a lid is delicious and uk made. Sabra’s owners support Israeli military so I’m not going there.

MiddleAgedDread · 13/10/2025 16:39

loads of products are missing the lids now. it's clearly to reduce the store's plastic waste and no doubt award someone quite high up with a large annual bonus as a result whilst meaning that everyone else is using a f*ckton more cling film! They're fairly universal sizing though so you keep them a reuse them on other pots.

baroqueandblue · 13/10/2025 16:49

I voted YANBU but good luck finding hummus avec or sans lids in our local Sainsburys these days. Every time I go in there isn't any! Well, none of their own brand anyway (including the organic version, which is the one I like).
