Where have the houmous lids gone??

Has anyone else noticed that some supermarkets have stopped including the plastic lid on houmous tubs, meaning that once you’ve removed the seal, it’s just footloose and fancy free if you don’t happen to finish it all in one go??

I take a tub in the car for DC to have with breadsticks on the way back from school or often include it in picnics. We usually don’t use it all in one sitting (and definitely not when it’s part of the aforementioned after school snack), but now there’s no way of nicely covering it back up so it stays fresh and doesn’t end up smeared all over my car’s upholstery

I noticed Sainsbury’s were first to let it go, and now Asda. Anyone else mildly irritated by this?!

YABU - it’s better this way
YANBU - bring back the houmous lid

Agree yanbu it is infuriating. I expect it has shaved 1p off the cost of a pot of houmous though.

Fortunately not all houmous suppliers have done this and the pots are often the same size from different suppliers, so we now keep a stash of houmous lids that get washed up and kept for using with the next pot rather than being recycled.

StrongLikeMamma · 13/10/2025 23:36

You need to decant it into Tupperware

StrongLikeMamma · 13/10/2025 23:36

Or buy Ramonas - it’s much nicer than Sainsbury’s!

CausalInference · 13/10/2025 23:37

Yes a noticed a couple of months ago ASDA was doing this, so annoying, then yesterday I opened a packet and spent a few min looking for the lid to put it back in the fridge, then remembered there isn't one, I stuffed it back in the cardboard sleeve, but it won't last as long even in the fridge. If you go for a picnic it really doesn't work, I'd just chuck it rather than get it allover the bag taking it home. Bring the lids back, cling film is a pain!!

It’s about recycling apparently. But it’s fucking ridiculous to make a product worse!

How do you make it please...

Hummus recipe

Note: this is made without tahini. It's probably better with it, but I haven't got around to working out the amount needed yet. So feel free to try adding tahini to your preferred taste!

1 tin chick peas (drained)
2 tbsp water (can use stuff from chick pea tin)
3 tbsp lemon juice
1 tbsp olive oil
1 garlic clove
1/2 flat tsp salt
1/2 flat tsp cumin powder

Whizz it up in a blender.
Once it's in the storage container I sprinkle powdered paprika over the top to look fancy and add a bit more flavour!
I also prefer it refrigerated cos I guess that's what we've got used to with shop bought ones.

HauntedBungalow · 13/10/2025 23:47

They're just taking the piss now. All these corporations shit all over the planet churning out warehouses full of frankenfood wrapped in plastic, then come over all preachy Thunberg about a lid to keep cream fresh.

Levie · 13/10/2025 23:54

It’s probably because of the new Extended Producer Responsibility tax. Manufacturers have to pay a new levy on all the packaging which ends up in household waste bins. The less packaging they use, the less tax they have to pay, and the lower the price of the item.

Do we expect shops to design packaging just in case someone happens to be having a picnic… surely that’s a small minority of purchases 😂

I remember when everyone moaned and moaned about being expected to take their own bags to the supermarket. And then … we all just got used to it.

…and then we all started buying plastic bin liners by the roll, instead of getting at least a dozen uses out of a free, light, compact, foldable carrier bag, before using it to pack cookery ingredients, or shoes, or dirty laundry, then finally using it as a bin bag!

PinkArt · 14/10/2025 00:02

I questioned humanity's progress the other day as I gaffer taped the fucking lid shut on a pot of yogurt.

Don't most people just take bags without paying?

BurntBroccoli · 14/10/2025 00:21

I get mine from Lidl , M & S or Morrisons now. Stopped shopping at Sainsbury’s a while back due to them having no tills on when I did quite a big shop. Plus prices were getting ridiculous.

BethBynnag86 · 14/10/2025 01:44

@Arlanymor I've got those silicone lids. They're really good-except I keep losing them🤦🏻‍♀️

Agreed about the lack of lids on tubs these days though; a few weeks ago I was attacked by an already opened tub of Guacamole which jumped off the fridge shelf as I opened the door .Because there was no second line of defence -ie a lid-I ended up wearing most of it 🫤

NeonSpark19 · 14/10/2025 05:07

I was frustrated by this too as dips tend to last a few days in our house! I’ve started using these reusable lids I found on Amazon. They fit perfectly on supermarket dips - Happy Lids https://amzn.eu/d/ayasQG8

FloridaCheese · 14/10/2025 05:19

Same with double cream lid which went a few years ago. And now coleslaw is at it too.

TheBlueHotel · 13/10/2025 15:35

Lidl still have them

yes i was trying to remember which shop still had them

Noseylittlemoo · 14/10/2025 06:54

I also hate the lack of lids on these things but find it so contradictory of the supermarkets in their bid to reduce plastic and waste. Our local Tesco used to sell a lot of vegetables loose. They got rid of the clear plastic bags (fine) and sold reusable netting bags for about 5 minutes and now a lot of things are sold only in plastic packs. I'm always throwing away mushrooms , plus a plastic tub and piece of cellophane whereas before I'd have bought a few mushrooms in a reusable / recyclable bag. No waste of food or packaging 🤷

BigButtons · 14/10/2025 06:56

It’s like Aldi are now kinda shrink roping their mince to reduce packaging. BUT the new packaging cannot be recycled in a normal bin whereas the old stuff could. What is the point?

@HauntedBungalow and others
I believe all the cream is processed by the same company, with various plants across the country. I doubt any cream in any supermarket has lids.

Notyouthful · 14/10/2025 07:42

@Noseylittlemoo you should remove the plastic from most vegetables otherwise they sweat. My mushrooms last longer

You can freeze mushrooms. Which will be fine for mince mixes, pasta bakes etc. My DM buys mushrooms in the reduced. Slices/chops up to place into freezer bags.

JMSA · 14/10/2025 07:44

It’s annoying with big tubs of Greek yogurt too.

mamagogo1 · 14/10/2025 07:46

@Zanatdy

when I was last in USA (7 years ago now) all straws and cutlery were compostable- looked like plastic but made from plant based material and required a special hot compost? Or something like that, some places had bamboo. Using disposable plates was more common in the past definitely but I never saw it myself when I lived in the USA, I think it’s possibly regional, they banned single use plastics long before we did where I lived and you could buy bulk goods loose etc 20 years before you could here

CarterBeatsTheDevil · 14/10/2025 08:05

These are quite convenient. Be careful before you order though as this company will send you many marketing emails
