Where have the houmous lids gone??

Has anyone else noticed that some supermarkets have stopped including the plastic lid on houmous tubs, meaning that once you’ve removed the seal, it’s just footloose and fancy free if you don’t happen to finish it all in one go??

I take a tub in the car for DC to have with breadsticks on the way back from school or often include it in picnics. We usually don’t use it all in one sitting (and definitely not when it’s part of the aforementioned after school snack), but now there’s no way of nicely covering it back up so it stays fresh and doesn’t end up smeared all over my car’s upholstery

I noticed Sainsbury’s were first to let it go, and now Asda. Anyone else mildly irritated by this?!

YABU - it’s better this way
YANBU - bring back the houmous lid

  1. It saves plastic. The world has far too much plastic waste. 2) Cover it with something else if you don't eat it all. 3) It's better not go eat 'on the go'. I don't know why so many people do. Sit down, take time and enjoy your food!

Lots of companies are doing this. Foil lid only, it's less plastic waste so it's 👍 from me. Get a pot to put it in.

Whatwudyoudo1 · 14/10/2025 08:35

Can highly recommend Ramona's hummus which comes with a lid!

Hmm, but at least the old lids were recyclable, the film isn't. Would tinfoil be better?

I voted YANBU but good luck finding hummus avec or sans lids in our local Sainsburys these days. Every time I go in there isn't any! Well, none of their own brand anyway (including the organic version, which is the one I like).

I hear from an insider (ie one of the kids’ mates who works at Sainos) that they quietly cleaned the shelves of own-brand houmous as there was a bacterial issue and a couple of people got ill.

NewHome2026 · 14/10/2025 09:57

YANBU about the lids
YABU to use houmous as your preferred spelling

PrincessofWells · 14/10/2025 10:25

It's a good thing, save the planet. Put it in a tupperware container when you get home.

cobrakaieaglefang · 14/10/2025 10:38

yep..also coleslaw, cottage cheese etc...infuriating.

NewHome2026 · 14/10/2025 10:43

It’s not saving the planet though is it? It is lip service to saving the planet while large corporations continue to pour oil into the ocean and commission private jets. Some of the film lids aren’t even recyclable whereas the proper lids were! But let’s keep putting the onus and blame on the consumer so we can conveniently fail to hold the real culprits accountable

AppleandPB · 14/10/2025 10:43

You can buy washable stretchy reusable lids, much more environmentally friendly.

FurForksSake · 14/10/2025 10:45

I can live without the film, that’s the bit they could have got rid of! A well fitted kid and a tight cardboard sleeve and it’s done.

Isn't that child abuse?

FurForksSake · 14/10/2025 17:19

What do you use your kids for? Heir and a spare? Spare is for covering hummus. Naturally. He complains a bit about the sweet chilli one.

Its annoying. I end up putting it in a sealable container, as i dont eat it that quick.

I guess that’s the point. Before disposable containers people had to be organised. We all have reusable containers. Best to plan ahead and bring one with you for picnics. But it is annoying getting used to it!

FenceBooksCycle · 13/10/2025 23:35

Agree yanbu it is infuriating. I expect it has shaved 1p off the cost of a pot of houmous though.

Fortunately not all houmous suppliers have done this and the pots are often the same size from different suppliers, so we now keep a stash of houmous lids that get washed up and kept for using with the next pot rather than being recycled.

Have also started doing this 😂

Scrape it in to a cleaned out gu pot and close it with a Pringle lid.

This is exactly what I do.

Whoever figured out that Pringle lids fit Gu pots deserves a damehood.

How do you make it please...

I make butterbean humous too. Olive oil, tin of butter beans, clove of garlic, lemon juice, salt and pepper (plus paprika or chilli powder). Blitz in a mini chopper. Add more lemon juice if you want it a bit less thick.

I bought silicone lids but they don't seem very secure

They don’t work on houmous or yogurt pots. Best thing is to keep a few lids - Lidl and Morrisons still have them on houmous.

Do we expect shops to design packaging just in case someone happens to be having a picnic… surely that’s a small minority of purchases 😂

I remember when everyone moaned and moaned about being expected to take their own bags to the supermarket. And then … we all just got used to it.

It’s not just for picnics. Surely we are not the only family that doesn’t finish a tub every time we open one. What about cottage cheese and yogurt? They all need lids. It just means you have to use cling film (useless) or silicon lids. It’s some kind of box ticking exercise to use less plastic which is just annoying. Meanwhile there are loads of other useless things still being made of plastic.

Talkingfrog · 15/10/2025 00:19

Same with lids fir beetroot salad and coleslaw in sainsburys. Doesn't reduce plastic. Don't eat it all in one go so end up having to cover it with cling film.

Flomingho · 15/10/2025 02:11

I miss the lids. It was less messy to store in the fridge. I always have at least 2 to 3 servings from one tub so have to wrap in cling film or put in another storage box.

fairydustt · 15/10/2025 02:47

My only advice is to make your own hummus! It’s really easy, chickpeas, tahini, lemon juice, oil and season to your taste :) but yes getting rid of lids is annoying, I’ve noticed this with other things too

Boriswentcamping · 15/10/2025 06:59

Moo pops have a yoghurt and humous lid - fits perfectly! Honestly the best solution and does cut down on reusable plastic
