Where have the houmous lids gone??

Has anyone else noticed that some supermarkets have stopped including the plastic lid on houmous tubs, meaning that once you’ve removed the seal, it’s just footloose and fancy free if you don’t happen to finish it all in one go??

I take a tub in the car for DC to have with breadsticks on the way back from school or often include it in picnics. We usually don’t use it all in one sitting (and definitely not when it’s part of the aforementioned after school snack), but now there’s no way of nicely covering it back up so it stays fresh and doesn’t end up smeared all over my car’s upholstery

I noticed Sainsbury’s were first to let it go, and now Asda. Anyone else mildly irritated by this?!

YABU - it’s better this way
YANBU - bring back the houmous lid

The pots of cream and big pots of yogurt have not had plastic lids for years. This is more detrimental than the hummus

Get stretchy silicon lids.

Clue’s in the name 😁

I laughed when I read the title as I knew what this would be about but your comment on this is even funnier! I've had a really shitty day so a laugh was much needed.

Alpro seemed to have stopped their lids then restarted them again which was good as its difficult using them without the plastic lid. Probably most people use clingfilm which totally defeats the object.

Buy Sabra houmous. Different level houmous with both a proper lid and a seal

melissasummerfield · 13/10/2025 20:18

Yes so annoying! and don't bother with those stretchy fucking lid things - I bought some for big pot yoghurts and just ended up with yoghurt all over my hands every morning!

inamo · 13/10/2025 20:20

A lot of tubs of similar stuff (yogurt, coleslaw, hummus etc.) are similar size, so every time I get a tub with a lid, I save the lids for the pots without a lid. Did I make sense there? 😊

dropoutin · 13/10/2025 20:31

Waitrose still have lids.

Zanatdy · 13/10/2025 20:34

Get a small Tupperware. It’s obviously to reduce plastic waste, which is fine, until you go on social media and see people in the US eating with disposable plastic plates and cutlery daily, and no suffering with paper straws like we do!

Unfortunately not on my No. 1 custard

BuildbyNumbere · 13/10/2025 21:39

Annoying but less plastic waste, buy some reusable silicon lids.

I hear you, i’m starting to think we could make a small fortune selling them on ebay ;)

FurForksSake · 13/10/2025 21:44

Scrape it in to a cleaned out gu pot and close it with a Pringle lid.

EgregiouslyOverdressed · 13/10/2025 21:45

Ramona’s. Excellent hummus with a proper lid. The jalapeño one is brilliant.

CriticalCritter · 13/10/2025 21:48

I have a set of reusable silicon lids for this situation. No drama.

Neveranynamesleft · 13/10/2025 21:54

Annoying when u buy a tub of cream cheese / yoghurt or whatever and try your best to make sure it stays at the top of the bag of shopping but something else pierces the foil whilst you're not looking....

Notyouthful · 13/10/2025 21:56

Some reductions in plastic is false economy. Take a McDs milkshake. One plastic straw did the job. Now need 3 paper straws as get soggy.

Morrisons used to sell cucumbers without wrapped in plastic. They don’t last as long so reverted back.

Why do Muller Lights have easy to pierce lids and the Corners don’t

Londonrach1 · 13/10/2025 21:59

Yanbu. The solution is not to buy any without a lid. Dont get me on coke bottles now as I struggle to seal them with their silly plastic that joins the lid to the bottle.

Notyouthful · 13/10/2025 22:03

If you hate the idea of silicon lids. Another alternative is reusable beeswax wraps. You warm the wrap with your hands, place the wrap on the pot then you use your hands’ warmth to seal it

Never Used them

Seeline · 13/10/2025 22:05

Sainsbury's cream has been without lids for ages. I've lost count if the number of pots that have had something go through the plastic/foil top on the way home in the boot of the car 😡

User415373 · 13/10/2025 22:06

It's cheaper for them to make and it goes off quicker so you'll be back buying more sooner. Nothing to do with reducing plastic unfortunately.

SumUp · 13/10/2025 22:11

Making your own is the way around it. Cheaper and better. Just takes half an hour to make a massive batch and freeze it in reuseable tubs. It keeps in the freezer for at least 3 months.

TicklishMintDuck · 13/10/2025 22:15

Morrisons still have the lids on houmous. I’ve noticed the pots of Greek yoghurt don’t have lids on anymore though.

VexedofVirginiaWater · 13/10/2025 22:20

I notice they did it with large yogurts years ago - I now use Moopops. I use them for my milk bottles (from the milkman) too - silicone, they do all sorts of sizes and I think Amazon have them too.

MOOPOPS

MOOPOPS

Apparently you can freeze houmous into ice cube trays so if you only want small portions you can just take out what's needed!

Lidl’s 49p a can of chickpeas. Add garlic, flavourings like red pepper (one of those peppers from a jar will do). I have a stick blender that has a chopper bowl. You don’t have to put tahini but for the sesame taste, half a teaspoon of sesame seeds

Blend to a texture suitable for you.
