Where have the houmous lids gone??

Has anyone else noticed that some supermarkets have stopped including the plastic lid on houmous tubs, meaning that once you’ve removed the seal, it’s just footloose and fancy free if you don’t happen to finish it all in one go??

I take a tub in the car for DC to have with breadsticks on the way back from school or often include it in picnics. We usually don’t use it all in one sitting (and definitely not when it’s part of the aforementioned after school snack), but now there’s no way of nicely covering it back up so it stays fresh and doesn’t end up smeared all over my car’s upholstery

I noticed Sainsbury’s were first to let it go, and now Asda. Anyone else mildly irritated by this?!

YABU - it’s better this way
YANBU - bring back the houmous lid

Yes, was delighted to find ones with a lid in Morrisons while away last week. Took them home for reuse!

Making your own is the way around it. Cheaper and better. Just takes half an hour to make a massive batch and freeze it in reuseable tubs. It keeps in the freezer for at least 3 months.

How do you make it please...

CheeseWisely · 13/10/2025 22:25

Yoghurt the same. I buy a big pot to last the week at work and have resorted to covering it with a sandwich bag secured with a hair band.

Apparently you can freeze houmous into ice cube trays so if you only want small portions you can just take out what's needed!

You can get ice cube trays with large capacity. Saw some which hold 300g of hm soup per ‘cube’

Wildro · 13/10/2025 22:25

Avoid Sabra hummus - they support the Israeli military.

i prefer Romanas hummus or making my own

How do you make it please...

tin of chick peas (drained)
garlic

For flavoured ones, add half a red pepper or a snacking red pepper, chillis or other things you want.

Tahini is optional

In a mini chopper or the chopper attachment of a stick blender, place in the blender and blend to a consistency to suit.

TootToot2020 · 13/10/2025 22:31

RAMONAS!

Jsowny · 13/10/2025 22:36

It's terrible with online food shopping, having no lids on big pots of yoghurt now. Too often the flimsy film lid is pierced by something else in the bag and is leaking and coating other things in yogurt. It's infuriating.

Kelticgold · 13/10/2025 22:37

Another reason why I love Sabra hummus. So annoying that some shops have stopped selling it.

Lemon juice is essential, and a drizzle of olive oil

Justastupidgirl · 13/10/2025 22:39

I buy both hummus and massive pots of yoghurt on a weekly basis and haven't noticed this! Sounds annoying though.

Lemonslemonseverywhere · 13/10/2025 22:42

Sabra hummus is the best! They still stock it in a fair few places. And Ramona’s too.

Emmz1510 · 13/10/2025 22:44

Yep, coleslaw and single/double cream are the same. Super annoying.

strawgoh · 13/10/2025 22:46

noworklifebalance · 13/10/2025 15:29

Yes and it’s annoying - I presume it is in a bid to reduce plastic waste, although I think the lids are more recyclable than the plastic film they now how.
They also render the plastic pots useless for storage.

^ This. I've always found another use for them and they last ages.

Summerlovin24 · 13/10/2025 22:47

YANBU
I love Houmous. Take it to work then realise I can't transport safely home.
Simple pleasures in life are important and the lid gate is a nuisance

Boriswentcamping · 13/10/2025 22:48

Moo pops from Amazon… silicone lids that fit most big yoghurt pots and humous - game changer 😅 decanting leftovers into other pots is a faff and seems to reduce the shelf life of the product imo. The moopops are great, and I guess will cut down on single use plastic. you need tk experiment a bit with the sizes. But the do one specifically for humous

fcktonoclingfilm · 13/10/2025 22:58

MiddleAgedDread · 13/10/2025 16:39

loads of products are missing the lids now. it's clearly to reduce the store's plastic waste and no doubt award someone quite high up with a large annual bonus as a result whilst meaning that everyone else is using a f*ckton more cling film! They're fairly universal sizing though so you keep them a reuse them on other pots.

I have name changed in honour of this post, which is spot on.

I also end up throwing more dried out old hummus away and buying more which I'm sure is good for the supermarket profits but definitely not the environment.

I sometimes put the entire hummus pot in a plastic bag, which again isn't really good for the environment, not compared to hard plastic.

So many "environmental" initiatives just make every normal person's life that little bit harder / more expensive whilst having no to negative real impact on the environment. I'm fairly sure the plastic film is more environmentally unfriendly than the hard lid.

And yes, people in the US don't think about this at all. They don't care, we're pissing into the wind with this stuff. It is irritating, YADNBU OP.

LozzaCh0ps · 13/10/2025 23:06

I haven’t rtft, but Moopops are great for this!

Timeforabitofpeace · 13/10/2025 23:07

It’s very annoying. Maybe learn to make it? It take 2 minutes in a food processor or blender. If you keep in chickpeas, garlic, olive oil, salt and tahini you can make it any time.

ButterPiesAreGreat · 13/10/2025 23:10

Emmz1510 · 13/10/2025 22:44

Yep, coleslaw and single/double cream are the same. Super annoying.

Lidl coleslaw has lids. I like their cheese coleslaw.

UtterlyOtterly · 13/10/2025 23:14

Waitrose hummus has lids.

I'm puzzled why this is a issue though. A pot of hummus lasts about ten seconds in our house.

HauntedBungalow · 13/10/2025 23:23

Beggars belief that they say it's for environmental reasons - the hummus is in fucking plastic. It's just more arseache for customers. And waste. As for the special sunbeam who decided to take the lids off cream, if they ever make themselves known to me I will kill them with my bare fucking hands, the stupid cream-wasting fuck.

Anyway, sabra hummus has lids. Lidl deluxe coleslaw also has lids.

Where sells cream with lids?

HauntedBungalow · 13/10/2025 23:26

inamo · 13/10/2025 20:20

A lot of tubs of similar stuff (yogurt, coleslaw, hummus etc.) are similar size, so every time I get a tub with a lid, I save the lids for the pots without a lid. Did I make sense there? 😊

Similar but not the same, is the problem.

DeadsoulsAngel · 13/10/2025 23:29

Teenagerantruns · 13/10/2025 15:34

They have left with the coleslaw lids, so annoying no one eats a tub of coleslaw in one go...

Same with the dip lids…. It’s frustrating, some things NEED lids!
