So I’m sat at home, on my own, reading.
Suddenly my front door is VERY forcibly trying to be opened, it made a huge racket and I immediately thought someone was trying to break in!
The door wasn’t locked, but thankfully I have a child safety latch on the door, which I always use.
I go to the door and can see through the glass it’s an Amazon delivery man.
I open the door, and ask what the hell he is doing, trying to get into my house.
He replies he does it all the time, and it’s my fault as my settings on Amazon say front door/porch.
I am fuming at this point, and tell him it’s totally unacceptable, I’m at home alone, and never have I had someone try to enter my house before to deliver a parcel!
After a few more choice words from me, he gives me the parcel and says he will be reporting ME!
Obviously I immediately reported it to Amazon, who are taking it very seriously.
As I said to them, I’m an assertive person who can stand up for themselves, what if the homeowner had been someone more vulnerable?
So am I being unreasonable to expect that delivery men DONT try to access your property?!

Poor driver, he could end up loosing his slave wage job because you reported this nonsense

gamerchick · 11/10/2025 18:56

They don't get a lot of time to make a drop. Change your safe place and lock your door.

Ilovemychocolate · 11/10/2025 18:01

Again, I don’t have a porch, he definitely didn’t think it was a porch as it’s quite clearly a front door.
And I definitely don’t need to “chill”, a complete stranger tried to walk into my house, when I’m at home alone.

He wasn't a villain, but COULD have been.

LOCK YOUR DOOR.

If what he did was within company policy (which 90% of replies think was)
He won't get in any trouble, so no need for you to worry

What have I just read…….
A complete stranger is allowed to, before even knocking or ringing a door bell, to try an open a front door to enter a private residence. Are you f’ing serious…..just because that’s what he always does…….makes no difference if the door is locked or not…nobody has a right to your private property, house…car….garden or anything……whether it’s secured or not.

If the resident has asked them to via the delivery instructions then yes. We only have OPs word she didn't ask him to via the delivery instructions or maybe she didn't ask him to and he was mistaken but no harm was done as OP is safety conscious and the latch was on. So all in all a mountain out of a molehill.

My Amazon delivery person does the exact same thing. I have a toddler who is potty training and two kittens at home. He's even done it when I've been in the shower. It's unsafe for a number of reasons. I now keep the front door locked at all times rather than just on the latch. The first time it happened I was scared like you were and tried to shout out to him but he quickly left, yet still continues to do it!

I think sometimes they also have to take a picture for their records and it's quite strange they want that picture to be inside my house. Not that we have much worth nicking but I don't want my naked 3 year old daughter to be in the picture. So, door locked 24-7.

Was your door closed? I know it wasn’t locked and that you had child safety engaged, but was it closed? I think I’d probably forgive a driver for mistaking a door for a porch if it looked ajar. I can imagine it shook you up though, it would have made a racket when he tried to push the door open and hit the child safety. I’m not surprised you’re a bit shaken, but I do think the unpleasantness of it may be clouding your view a bit.

The door was closed.

I completely get you OP, exact same thing happened with me about a month ago !!! My front door looks NOTHING LIKE A PORCH and my settings do not say leave at the front door. I went outside and told him what the hell did he think he was doing opening my front door and that he is never to do that again ! And for those crazies on here saying you should of had it locked BOLLOCKS...he was out of order. To be honest my door is always locked apart from this odd time 🤷‍♀️🤦‍♀️
I didn't think of reporting him-you did the right thing as it's just plain weird to do something like that !!

SpottedDeer · 11/10/2025 19:02

Ilovemychocolate · 11/10/2025 18:59

The door was closed.

I assumed the door was closed too. Mine is and it's not a porch and he still does it. Maybe it's the same guy?

SoOriginal · 11/10/2025 19:03

Ilovemychocolate · 11/10/2025 18:59

The door was closed.

Oh… then I’m on your side OP. Wouldn’t expect him to try to open the door if your delivery instructions say to leave outside and it’s not very obviously a porch I.e see through glass door or adjar. And then to be rude when you’re obviously a bit shaken. Yes, he’s in the wrong.

Your reaction is insanely OTT.

Ilovemychocolate · 11/10/2025 18:54

Oh do bore off!

Well, he didn't try to enter your home, did he??? You're exaggerating.

He was just delivering a parcel ffs.

Zodiacrobat · 11/10/2025 19:03

Ilovemychocolate · 11/10/2025 18:13

He didn’t knock, he didn’t use my doorbell, he tried very forcibly to enter my property, using such force that I thought someone was trying to break in.
You can’t see that it was very unsettling for me, as a woman at home alone?
A complete stranger trying to enter my house?
Thankfully Amazon have taken it a lot more seriously, and are starting a formal complaint process against the driver.

Jeez so he could lose his job because YOUR delivery instructions are wrong? What a bitchy bitter thing to
do.

igotbills · 11/10/2025 19:03

CharlotteUnaNatalieThompson · 11/10/2025 18:54

Are you quite ok? Of course leaving your door unlocked doesn't give anyone permission to come in!

Nooooo! Was just about to go on my evening forage and let myself into the new neighbours for supper

Panda69 · 11/10/2025 19:05

Quite shocked at people's attitudes to this post!....I'm with OP, settings on my stuff say front door/ porch but that just means if recipient has front door, put at front door,or recipient has porch put in porch....the setting options are not a singular choice.....I'd be furious if driver opened my obviously front door! Glad you reported it,it's serious! Even if it's unlocked so according to some "Your fault" doesn't mean delivery drivers free to come in uninvited! Unless clearly stated if no answer at door, open it and place parcel inside!

igotbills · 11/10/2025 19:06

Zodiacrobat · 11/10/2025 19:03

He won't lose his job if he acted within Amazon's delivery policy.
If an investigation proves a genuine confusion with delivery instructions he'll be back trying our door handles in no time

BCBird · 11/10/2025 19:07

If your front door protrudes, it can give the illusion of being a porch to the untrained eye. I have been asked to leave porch open for a delivery, but it isn't actually a porch.

sittingonabeach · 11/10/2025 19:07

I can see it being unsettling but that’s why I keep my doors locked, you never know who might try and open the door.

RakshaUK · 11/10/2025 19:07

My partner and I are disabled, a lot of our deliveries come from online. We are all our delivery people to open the door and leave parcels in our hallway. Our dogs are behind a stairgate and there is always someone at home.
For added security we have a ring doorbell.

SoOriginal · 11/10/2025 19:07

Wouldn’t it be such a perfect disguise though. Just a harmless delivery driver, out on his rounds, inadvertently opened the door to leave a parcel, not realising it wasn’t a porch… and then committing burglary when there’s actually no one home 🤣🤣

hellowhaaat3632 · 11/10/2025 19:08

Was he actually trying to get into your house, or just leave the package inside?
mine do that all the time, i prefer they leave it inside than where it cant be stolen… but yes I’ve had a few shocks when I wasn’t expecting it

Riverswims · 11/10/2025 19:08

again; your settings

Zodiacrobat · 11/10/2025 19:03

The OP has likely told Amazon he tried to forcibly enter the house, which would be a disciplinary offence.

Rather than say he got the instructions wrong (if he did) and tried to open the door to deliver her parcel.

MoominMai · 11/10/2025 19:09

I live alone and exact same thing happened to me. I forgot to lock the door and fully take on the blame. Initially I was cross at the driver but then I thought they’re on quick multi drop targets and to make delivery faster probably just out of habit try any handle that might feasibly be a porch door. Luckily I have a tiny hallway separating between my lounge so wasn’t too traumatising but I learnt my lesson as with any profession you get bad eggs if they realise they have unexpected access to your whole house so onus is on us to ensure our property is always secured.

I don’t think in your position I’d have reported the driver I’d have just made a mental note to ensure my front door is always locked.
