Omg! Amazon driver just tried to come into my house!!!

So I’m sat at home, on my own, reading.
Suddenly my front door is VERY forcibly trying to be opened, it made a huge racket and I immediately thought someone was trying to break in!
The door wasn’t locked, but thankfully I have a child safety latch on the door, which I always use.
I go to the door and can see through the glass it’s an Amazon delivery man.
I open the door, and ask what the hell he is doing, trying to get into my house.
He replies he does it all the time, and it’s my fault as my settings on Amazon say front door/porch.
I am fuming at this point, and tell him it’s totally unacceptable, I’m at home alone, and never have I had someone try to enter my house before to deliver a parcel!
After a few more choice words from me, he gives me the parcel and says he will be reporting ME!
Obviously I immediately reported it to Amazon, who are taking it very seriously.
As I said to them, I’m an assertive person who can stand up for themselves, what if the homeowner had been someone more vulnerable?
So am I being unreasonable to expect that delivery men DONT try to access your property?!

Change your settings. These people have a tough job to do and time is tight for them.

My bosses office door is closed.

I need him to sign off a large PO over my limit, and im very busy so dont have time to knock.

Im just going to go in.

Is this ok? Its his fault for not locking it right?

Different situation entirely.

So thats a no, its not ok to go through a closed door without knocking first 👍

BestBeforeddmmyy · 13/10/2025 13:44

I would have called the police and reported him - as well as telling Amazon.

eastegg · 13/10/2025 13:44

Glad to see some of these awful people abusing the OP are having their posts deleted. Good.

Sartre · 13/10/2025 13:50

Honestly think the guy delivers hundreds of parcels a day, often in a hurry and maybe they mixed up your instructions and it did say porch or he was mistakenly looking at someone else’s. He’ll no doubt be used to leaving parcels in people’s porches all of the time so I don’t think he was trying to break into your house or anything crazy.

Explain why using another analogy about women choosing how they want to live, and men then deciding they want entry, is "daft"

Because you seemed to think that the analogy was appropriate. It wasn’t.

it only means someone reported them, not that they said anything wrong 😂

"abusing" and "disagreeing" with someone are not the same at all. Why post on AIBU if you are not ready to hear that yes you are BU

Posts aren’t automatically deleted because they’ve been reported. The reason is given in the deletion box, often as here ‘for breaking talk guidelines’.

I know the difference between disagreeing and abusing thanks! So does MN. I chose the word abusing because that’s what I meant 👍

so basically a non-reason, and yes, they are deleted. Just report any random one to check

I am sure YOU meant it, but I'd love to know what how you describe posts that are truly abusive when you react so strongly to simple disagreement.

MerryScroller · 13/10/2025 00:29

First reasonable post I’ve seen on here. She ticked the box front door/ porch and is surprised someone tried to leave it in her porch 😂

I hate the fact she’s then gone and abused the poor man, who’s likely been out all day worked to the core delivering parcels with no rest stops etc. It’s unjustified and rude.

There is no porch.

The OP has likely told Amazon he tried to forcibly enter the house, which would be a disciplinary offence.

Rather than say he got the instructions wrong (if he did) and tried to open the door to deliver her parcel.

I certainly didn’t lie.
I reported exactly what happened.

Wow that is really rude and cheeky of him to just walk through your house like that and hand you the parcel I would’ve gone absolutely apoplectic if someone did that to me. I now keep my door locked and they are told to leave parcels behind the bin if I’m not in. Did you report them for doing that?

I didn't report them. There is enough misery in the world without me adding to it. In any case the couriers have been the same ones for ages.

My front door is unlocked for convenience, and as the house is not overlooked from the front, there is a place for left parcels. The problem now is that there have been so many parcels reported stolen that it has become necessary - so they say - for the courier to take a photo of you holding the parcel.

I have plain glass in the front door and have a message to ring me from the door showing through. I don't have doors downstairs for wheelchair access. (I get a Band reduction for disability.Saves about £500 a year)

I have a very good safe place - on the doorstep. The house is 56ft from the road at the end of a cul-de-sac and is not overlooked except by cars turning round. There is nothing on the other side of the road either, but I do share a boundary with six other properties, hence the CCTV.

BunnyLake · 12/10/2025 00:36

I have no idea what you mean. Why would a home have two separate doors or do you mean a house converted into flats?

Edited

It has been the same on my estate since covid killed off the elderly home owners. The houses are mainly detached on fairly large sites. One of my carers doubled as the local courier, and he told me the houses are being turned into two dwellings with the addition of a porch

The partnership of property managers and landlords - and some tradespeople bought the properties at a lower price after new building took their views of open country.

llizzie · 13/10/2025 15:26

Ilovemychocolate · 12/10/2025 12:38

Because I’m not possessed with X-ray vision, so had no idea it was an Amazon delivery, and not some random person trying to aggressively open my front door.
You can’t see how that would cause alarm in someone home alone? Especially when the door is not knocked upon first?
You don’t think that might give you a bit of a fright?

The best course of action is to have a camera inside the door with a receiver to record if you are in a habit of leaving the door unlocked..

I run a great risk leaving my door open, but if someone did come in, whatever they might do to me, it would be recorded.

I am not sure that the house insurers would take responsibility for any damage or items stolen if the door is unlocked. I once ordered an extra key from the locksmith and he sent it courier, which his logo on it and it never arrived. I contacted my house insurance and they said I was not covered if a key is missing and told me to get the lock changed. The locksmith came back and replaced it - for free.

Littletreefrog · 13/10/2025 08:41

I can imagine this was very scary as he had actually entered your house and even worse shut the door behind him.

Are some of the houses in your street converted to flats? I used to live in a terraced street and we were one of the only houses still a full house. All the others you went in the front door and the hallway was a communal area then there was another 'front door' to get in the downstairs flat and one at the top of the stairs for the upstairs flat. It confused so many delivery drivers who either just tried to walk in our house (we soon learn to keep the door locked) or alternatively were standing in the street knocking on a door no one was going to open.

I would hate to be a delivery person these days it's all quite confusing and the multiple delivery instructions and impossible targets must be a nightmare.

My house is detached pretty well away from my neighbours he had to walk via my drive & up a few steps & it’s pretty shielded from my neighbours view. It was scary & really caught me off guard. I guess I got lucky in the fact I will react & not afraid to stand my ground but imagine if that was an elderly lady or if there was a toddler there or even pets could be let out it’s not acceptable at all. No I’ve not heard anything back from the courier company which is very disheartening!

TinkersBelle · 13/10/2025 16:52

Petitchat · 13/10/2025 08:28

That must have been really disturbing especially jf he'd closed the door behind him, whilst in your house!

Hope you're ok.
Have the company replied yet?

Thanks, it did raise my BP somewhat! It was scary but I think I scared him going into an instant rage 🤨🥴🤷‍♀️🤣😂 I was more angry he had the audacity to walk in & close the door behind him! My handbag was on the banister right next to him so I have no idea if he was chancing taking something 🤷‍♀️ my poor husband then had me yelling down the phone telling him about it! It did take 2 days to get to speak to a human at the courier company I just kept getting a bit it’s frustrating!

The door had a latch on it, which is why he couldn’t open it.
Im a childminder so the latch is always on.
I have pointed this out over and over on the thread, and it’s in the original OP.

Poor guy?
My instructions say to leave outside front door.
Once I answered the door, and asked why he tried to enter my property, he immediately became belligerent and said he would report me!
So I have zero sympathy for him.
I am a woman at home, alone, a man trying to force my door open to deliver a package, without even knocking first, you can’t see how incredibly unsettling that is?
And just to reiterate, Amazon have confirmed that delivery people are not allowed to try to open the door.

Same thing happened to me recently. The front door was unlocked and the guy opened it and put the parcel down on a table in the hallway! When I realised what had happened I went outside and I asked the delivery guy why he would do that. He said that this is what people ask him to do, that it's weird that I didn't want him to do that. I was a bit annoyed because opening the front door could have meant the dogs running out into the road. But also I was just weirded out because... just no, really. Don't step inside people's houses without their invitation! (And yes, my safe place instructions literally say, leave outside front door.)

llizzie · 15/10/2025 00:12

Why not put your telephone number on a note and ask them to phone you?

They are having a real problem with stealing, and the courier told me they have to try to photograph the recipient wherever possible, with the parcel.

Eventually, unless something is done, courier companies will fold, and it will be back to RM before covid. During lockdowns, they HAD to leave parcels in a safe place because of the risk of infection.
After covid, they continued to leave parcels, but now, with so many parcels going missing, couriers companies will be forced to end deliveries in favour of collection points.

This thread is full of people saying poor delivery guys, they’re so pressured they only have half a second to do the first thing that pops into their heads, of course they can’t be blamed for trying to get into someone’s house, and yet you’re saying they will have time to read a phone number and phone it? OP’s instructions were fine anyway, they said leave outside.

Hi OP. I've just done a similar post myself after having this happen to me yesterday.
I was home and heard my front door open, no knock, I heard a man's voice so thought it was my OH coming in. We have a new puppy so I went in to the garden to get him and saw 2 parcels in my hallway when I came back in. No sign of my OH. I then had a notification saying my Amazon parcels including rat poison had been 'handed to the resident' .
I then knew that the driver had opened my door without knocking and left the parcels there on the floor.
I'm furious as my instructions are leave in safe place..next to the door and there is also a note on the door saying leave in safe place.
He could of potentially let my pup out when he can't go out yet, left rat poison on the floor where he could of had access to it. He didn't even knock!!
99% of Mumsnetters think this is entirely my fault for not locking my door and for ordering rat poison. Apparently I was lucky to not get burgled, raped or murdered by an axe murderer by leaving my door unlocked.
My issue is the guy didn't even knock - just opened the door.

When will people learn to lock their doors?

My door was locked. The driver still tried to open it, very forcibly.
