Who is this mysterious “they” that all have VPUs? Because it’s not HMP. Many prisons run on what we call a “fully integrated regime”. Meaning all, but the extremely vulnerable, are housed together and follow the same regime together regardless of offence. The only common denominator is their category status.

The prison in question here has run in this way for a long time, with a very small number of prisoners on any kind of VP status. If they require a VP unit and it’s appropriate then they’d generally be shipped out to another cat A jail that has a VP wing.

Do you want to share where you’re getting your info from that you can confidently say it’s bollocks that uk prisons often run an integrated regime? I mean, I can go back and tell them LiveLoveLaughWhatever says we’re doing it all wrong if you like? 😅

Okay. I’ve googled it, because I did say in my initial post that I ‘thought’ prisoners who had committed crimes against children were kept separated for safety reasons (their own safety), so I knew I’d read it somewhere. And Wakefield does have a segregation unit where prisons are kept under a Rule 45 process - which can include situations such as discipline or in a prisoner’s best interest (ie for safety from other prisoners). So I’m honestly not sure why you’re adamant it doesn’t happen?! Whether or not it happens - I really don’t give a rats arse, but as you’re being such an arse about it, I decided to check….

Not at all. We're not mind readers. It's more difficult to understand the intention when it's written, without verbal nuance to back up intended meaning.
Some people get mixed up with the subject matter and this is probably what many thought/presumed you had done.

If I was you I would've just explained that it was meant sarcastically......it's not hard to clear things up. It "on you" for not being very nice and trying to demean people for something that wasn't obvious for many many people. (Neither of my parents are English so we weren't brought with sarcasm).

She did explain. You should at least check out the OP's subsequent posts before rushing to judgment - after all, MN makes it very easy for you to pick them out nowadays.

He was brilliant in Steps. Absolutely tragic news.

Your comment caught one or two out. What gave it away was "brilliant"😂

To be fair they'd have been nothing without Lee and H.

Physical contact allowed between prisoners and their visitors? I would have thought not due to the opportunity to pass drugs over .

They can have physical contact. Not prolonged snogging but yes, can hold hands with their loved ones and kiss, hug etc. It’s real life, not eastenders

Americano75 · 11/10/2025 22:50

I did explain, very quickly. And I don't think sarcasm is exclusive to English speakers is it? What an odd thing to say.

Now, I think we've picked this bone clean, don't you?

Well to be fair I didn't read anything past your first comment....wish I had now lol.
It's not an odd thing to say. What an odd thing to say lol
Sarcasm is a very English thing I've noticed..... I guess they have it in other countries (?) ...I wouldn't know, but it's certainly not very prevalent from the country where my parents are from...at least not in the 1940s and 1950s when they were there in their formative years.

Americano75 · 11/10/2025 23:06

Maybe you should have.

And sarcasm isn't just for English speakers, or an 'English' thing and it is an odd thing to say. Also worth noting is that I'm Scottish, not English, which rather proves my point.

Now, really. Done.

A lot of people who claim to be against the Death penalty are actually not being honest as this thread shows. We all have a case where the death penalty would fill us with an absolute sense of glee and relief. I dont mourn this man and think that the death penalty should be offered to convicts on demand as assisted dying is to the general population.

I disagree.

There are various people whose deaths I would feel happy about, whether its via an accident, illness or - as is the case here - a stabbing in prison.

But I understand well enough that my personal anger at, or hatred of, some people isn't something that belongs in the justice system (not least given the frequency of wrongful convictions).

Murder is wrong.
State-sanctioned murder is particularly dangerous.
But yeah, that doesn't mean there isnt sometimes a sense of satisfaction that can be derived from something terrible happening to someone awful.

I’m not being an arse, or not trying to anyway. It’s the constant “well, they’re all segregated, sex offenders have separate wings. Rapists are hated, there’s a price on their head, they have a shit time” etc that I’m trying to correct. It’s really not the case. Not even nearly.

Yes, that prison has a very small unit housing a handful of VPs. Some have bigger VP units. Many have none at all other than the actual seg (every prison has one of these and it’s meant to be temporary) which is for any prisoner, not just sex offenders. I’m not going to say where any particular prisoner is or where they have been but it’s not “bollocks” that thousands of sex offenders who have committed crimes against children do their time alongside all variety of other offenders. Every day, every week. Year in, year out. It’s the norm within our prisons and posters who suggest he might’ve been killed for another reason such as a debt or a personal grievance are probably right.

miraxxx · 11/10/2025 22:56

Context is king- in any language, not just English. There are languages which do not have sexed pronouns or tenses but people understand what is being said by context. In contrast a droll "how sad" is absolutely bloody obvious.

It absolutely isn't bloody obvious....hence so many people misunderstood!....and especially to someone who's żebeen brought up by foreign parents born in the 1930s and 40s who had no concept of sarcasm (I think I know my parents language better than you)....so stop being unnecessarily unkind and lacking in any form of insight.

SorcererGaheris · 11/10/2025 23:16

ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit · 11/10/2025 21:45

Can't believe we have Ian Watkins Truthers now - a man of whom there was reportedly a wealth of photographic and video evidence showing him participating in his crimes, as well as a wealth of witness evidence, and who ultimately plead guilty and then made light of his crimes.

@ThatDreamyLemonBiscuit

I think you're misunderstanding the original posts.

The original comment was a statement about the murder of Watkins possibly having nothing to do with Watkins' crimes against children - the murderer could have had another motive.

The poster you quoted is simply saying that that was probably true.

NOBODY was denying that Watkins is guilty of the crimes he was convicted of.

Yeah I wish I had read past it.. ..but neither was I obligated.

I didn't say sarcasm was just for English speakers but it's definitely a very British thing and it's a known fact that many foreigners (including Americans) misunderstand the Brits because of it so I don't think your argument holds up at all
So my comment was ABSOLUTELY NOT an odd thing to say at all. My parents had zero concept of sarcasm. My dad never really grasped it before he died and mum has learned to understand it to an extent but I still have to explain it to her at times....so please stop being unkind and calling people odd. It's just lacking in insight as to other people's perspectives of humour, unkind and unnecessary.

Now we're done.

In what way have I been unkind?
I'm simply putting forward my perspective in the face of harsh criticism.
It was yourself that started with the demeaning of posters who (understandably) didn't pick up on the sarcasm.
I really do not think it was an odd thing to say.
Foreigners (especially my parents - the beloved people that brought me up) did not/do not understand sarcasm. I get it, but when it's written down (not spoken) it's easily and understandably not picked up on. That's all.

He should have been hanged by the state, capital punishment for his crimes. I feel sorry for the inmate who may be given extra time.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 11/10/2025 22:30

She had evidence of previous crimes. Had they acted on her repeated reports rather than by dismissing her as a bitter headcase ex/fan, he should have already been in prison with no career long before additional crimes were committed.

  • 29 December 2008 - Joanne Mjadzelics' reported Watkins to Pontypridd Child Services for inappropriate conduct with a child
  • 31 December 2008 - Rhondda children's services received a handwritten letter from Ms Mjadzelics
  • 8 January 2009 - Meeting held to discuss allegations, police investigation opened
  • 28 March 2009 - Ms Mjadzelics is interviewed by West Yorkshire Police
  • 1 June 2009 - Investigation officially closed by South Wales Police
  • 4 October 2010 - Report made to the Met Police by someone else of "disturbing comments" made by Ian Watkins
  • 29 May 2011 - Ms Mjadzelics sent email to ACPO claiming Watkins had raped a young child
  • 21 September 2012 - Watkins is arrested and bailed and his computers seized

The post I responded to didn’t mention this. Of course that’s not the same as someone telling the police what he wanted to do.

He'd shown the woman who reported him child sexual abuse images, so they could have got him on possession/possibly distribution? of said images.

I wasn’t aware of this i was only replying to the information on that one comment.

Irrespective of feelings on IW death, that inmate is a murderer and doesn’t deserve sympathy either

He might be a paedophile too, one that is capable of slitting someone's throat. I doubt his crime is tax evasion if he is in Monster Mansion. Regardless, he'll be given extra time, but it might be life on top of life for all we know. Sounds bloody dangerous anyway, not someone I'd want on the streets any time soon.

KillMeMounjaro · 11/10/2025 23:45

It’s really quite appalling and worrying that prisoners can commit murder inside a prison. Something has gone seriously wrong here. People are sentenced for their crimes, they’re not meant to receive mob justice, nor be put in danger.

(That said, I doubt anyone is shedding a tear for this piece of human garbage, and may he rot in hell)

Correct I didn't read your other posts. I'm simply responding to the demeaning things you've said in your direct posts to me and a comments (within those posts) where you have referred to others....so not reading your other posts, at this point, is irrelevant.

UK prisons are overcrowded and poorly managed. Last year sex offenders were being released early due to a lack of space. That said, you cannot be too naive about assault and murders even in the best managed prisons. It comes with the territory.
