Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

It’s not about whether I can afford it it’s not a whinge that I want it and can’t afford it. far from. It’s about fairness I guess it just seems supermarkets are. Charging what they like and it seems to be totally unchecked a single pensioner gets what around £200 a week ? Yet a single dish for a single meal costs the same - maybe it’s always been this way but it’s really outraged me this year

But the country isn't just full of poor people there is a lot of people who have plenty of money and want something special for Christmas. Supermarkets should be for everyone.

DreamyTealGuide · 11/10/2025 17:25

honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis

that crisis in not going to improve if we expect food suppliers to work for nothing or to actively lose money (more than they already are)

TeaAndTattoos · 11/10/2025 17:27

I had to look it up because I thought you were joking but no they are seriously have the nerve to ask that much for it. For that price I would want Tom Kerridge to cook it for me. Do people really have that much to spend on just one meal?

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:32

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

In fairness they are also doing a roast turkey main course for 6 for £60

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 16:46

It does have mushrooms

It was a reference to the Ellen Patterson case! A woman in Australia killed multiple members of her soon-to-be-ex-husband's family by feeding them beef Wellington laced with poisonous mushrooms. The husband was also meant to be at the meal, but she'd poisoned him before (unproven) so he didn't go.

Yes

How long does it take you & how much do the ingredients cost?

I’ve been making it for years as dh favourite .in fact I’ll be making it for his birthday at the end of the month . I’m a nurse now but before that I had a qualification in the catering industry so I’m a pretty good cook . I can say that it certainly costs a lot less than £125! And that’s with the beef coming from an award winning butcher

Longdarkcloud · 11/10/2025 17:29

Wonder how much it cost that Australian woman to prepare her Beef Wellington for a lunch party for 5 (with leftovers).

Exactly its like saying how dare Toyota sell brand new expensive cars when I can only afford a cheap 2nd hand one. Don't they know there is a col crisis.

what fairness are you on about? It's a business, not a charity.

Why on earth should they only sell the lowest items, lowest prices and lowest quality?

I don't even understand your reasoning. Supermarkets sell things you can't afford, or don't want to spend money on. So?

flowrrpoh · 11/10/2025 17:30

BatchCookBabe · 11/10/2025 17:15

So it's not a mistake! 😱

Good grief, no wonder M & S are going down the shitter charging prices like this! I don't actually know anyone who shops there tbh. And I know many people across all the social classes. The place needs putting out to pasture..... Ludicrous! Hmm

How are they going down the shitter?

DrowningInSyrup · 11/10/2025 17:30

I'd be interested to see what Tom Kerridge's input is. He obviously doesn't make them all, so what does he do? Provide a recipe that has to be modified for mass production?

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 17:30

@CrystalShoe yes shocker eh ? Cows have actual tails, keeps the flies off their poor backsides. Poor cows, 😢

HewasH2O · 11/10/2025 17:31

Bjorkdidit · 11/10/2025 17:31

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 17:21

INCLUDING THE TAIL! Omg, that sounds YUCK!🤢

Sorry, reading that brought out my inner teen. What on earth do you do with a cow's tail???

No the tail of the fillet. Its all steak but the cross-section at the tail is too small to cut into steaks but it's good for things like stroganoff.

But I don't understand what point the OP is trying to make. There's always things that are out of reach of many. Shops are not required to ensure they only sell goods that are widely affordable.

yes. Of course.

Other people don't have that much to spend, or simply prefer spending money elsewhere. So what?

Some families go to the pub/ restaurant for Christmas, and are happy to pay the Christmas premium. Other families can't afford anywhere near that, again so what?

Are people seriously having the nerve to complain because they dont' want to spend a certain amount so no one else should?

Absolutely of course they have to have a range for every budget …. This just seems beyond reasonable to me

How long does it take? You have to value your time too. It sounds delicious by the way!

SpottyAardvark · 11/10/2025 17:33

They’re not. Far from it, in fact. M&S has been turned round by the current management and is now extremely successful again, particularly their food business which is growing & expanding further & faster than ever. They know exactly who their customers are, and exactly what they want. Their massive, showpiece store at Fosse Park near Leicester is unbelievably busy, and has been since it fully re-opened last year.

Yes, they do. Are you totally unaware of the wealth some people have?

Doggymummar · 11/10/2025 17:35

SilkAndSparklesForParties · 11/10/2025 16:33

A piece of fillet large enough to feed six and of excellent quality will cost £100ish. Bear in mind that all the work is done for you, and I don't think it's too bad. Beef Wellington in a decent restaurant for six is going to be about £55 to £60 per head.

Last year we had their Wagyu Beef joint which was about that, it was the most beautiful piece of meat and we both said let's have that again this year. We shop at ocado weekly, but at Christmas it really is special.

DoraSpenlow · 11/10/2025 17:35

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:43

I know that, but cooking it yourself will always by better rather than a ready version! And if that’s what I wanted to cook then fair enough the portion size will be smaller too.

You've not seen the absolute disaster that was my last effort. Ended up as a steak pie!

I would actually guess that the majority of the population probably have £195 to spend on something they think is sufficiently important. Particularly as Christmas is an annual event that people often save up for, and also because some families split food costs.

But most of those people probably don't want to (I wouldn't) which is not the same thing.

Are they frozen? If not, I have a vision of them all being sold off cheap on Christmas Eve 🤣

I had the same vision as you! 😂
