Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

Are they frozen? If not, I have a vision of them all being sold off cheap on Christmas Eve 🤣

They will be produced to preorder.

BatchCookBabe · 11/10/2025 17:15

So it's not a mistake! 😱

Good grief, no wonder M & S are going down the shitter charging prices like this! I don't actually know anyone who shops there tbh. And I know many people across all the social classes. The place needs putting out to pasture..... Ludicrous! Hmm

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 11/10/2025 17:10

If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it and move on. Not everyone is struggling.

I didn’t say I couldn’t afford it…..

Exactly. I can afford it too. I'm just not batshit enough to buy it.

Exactly what I was thinking.... (and cursing that I am newly vegetarian and DH is vegetarian for some 8 years).

The outrage in your op told me you couldn’t afford it either, not you don’t have 200 pounds, hut you can’t afford to spend 200 on a beef wellington for 6 on Xmas day. And that’s fine, plenty can’t, no shame in it. But some can,

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 17:18

Complete madness. I can't imagine buying that. If I was desperate for beef Wellington I'd just make my own.

Still, I suppose there must be people who buy it, or they wouldn't sell it at that price.

But I don't think it would matter how much money I had, I wouldn't spend 200 pounds on a ready meal. Value for money matters to me.

TimeForATerf · 11/10/2025 17:18

Well I wouldn’t pay it, you can get a whole fillet of beef including the tail from Morrisons for about £60, I get one every year. I’ve only eaten the Tom Kerridge stuff with yellow stickers and was decidedly underwhelmed.

That said, it’s an order item, so they may end up only making a few and never running that line again.

PigglyWigglyOhYeah · 11/10/2025 17:18

vincettenoir · 11/10/2025 16:55

Yeah I saw that. And there was a game pie for £165. I mean you still have to heat it and serve it and wash up after. If I was splurging that big I’d rather go out to eat somewhere nice.

Well, do that, then.

It's not like they are trying to pass it off as part of an economy Christmas Dinner. Some people can afford it. Or is everyone supposed to eat cheap crap because not everyone can afford expensive stuff?

Rosecoffeecup · 11/10/2025 17:18

I don't really understand the outrage - if its too expensive, don't buy it? I wouldn't spend 200 quid on a dress but I don't get offended if other people do, it makes no difference to my life

You can spend £40k on a car that will get you from A to B just like a £10k car will

LillyPJ · 11/10/2025 17:18

It does seem ridiculous but while there are people willing to pay that much, they are happy to charge it. They'd soon stop if nobody bought those sort of products.

BlueSlate · 11/10/2025 17:19

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 17:15

I didn’t say I couldn’t afford it…..

What is your actual issue with it?

You say you know how expensive fillet steak is as you buy it.

You understand, presumably, that items come in a wide range of prices, and varying quality for a wide range of budgets.

Your complaint isn't because you can't afford it personally.

No one is going to force you into M&S to buy one if you don't want one.

There have always been things for sale that cost the same as, and even more, than the state pension.

Some people have always had more money than others.

I'm not really sure what the issue is.

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 11/10/2025 17:20

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 17:03

No of course not it’s about massive profit and inflated prices I just don’t think anyone can justify that price

I'd be surprised if not anyone could. They're bound to sell some. There will be people who think it's justifiable enough to buy.

Really the time for this discussion is after Christmas. The market will decide if it's ok, reasonable, scandalous or whatever other description. I wouldn't buy it, but I also wouldn't at half the price. It's not what I like for my Christmas dinner.

Also, the COL crisis being crowbarred in is bizarre. Clearly people buying pre-prepped fillet beef dishes for Christmas from Marks and Spencer are not going to be on the bones of their arses! If anything, this might be a pitch for people who usually go out but have now been priced out. It's common for someone who can no longer afford a particular luxury to go for the next best thing.

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

If you were worrying about the cost of living you are unlikely to be shopping at M&S food! You’re looking at a top price supermarket, a top end luxury product with a celebrity chef branding, of course it’s going to be bloody expensive- everything is aimed at that goal.

Plus actually good food is expensive, which is something in this country we seem not to realise. To make that product someone had to rear a very good cow, in (hopefully good conditions), all the other products ( will be all butter in the pastry I imagine) then the brand and each step in the chain has to make a profit. Think about what you’d pay for that quality in a good restaurant and it starts to make sense.

If you don’t want to pay it buy something else or make your own, it isn’t a difficult dish if you calculate the cooking time and temp correctly and have a reliable oven.

Leaving aside your charming phraseology, they are actually doing extremely well, even given their cyber attack struggles.

MummytoE · 11/10/2025 16:35

For the price I would want Tom to come to my house and cook it for me on Christmas morning😂

I’d want him to do the washing up and make the bed next morning.

INCLUDING THE TAIL! Omg, that sounds YUCK!🤢

Sorry, reading that brought out my inner teen. What on earth do you do with a cow's tail???

Leopardwallop · 11/10/2025 17:21

I love m&s food generally but I’ve had so many misses with their Christmas selection in the past this would be a huge gamble for Christmas Day. Not that I’d consider it anyway lol at that price . Local butcher every time for fancy meat things at Christmas.

I love M&S. I walk though the food hall every day as part of my walk to work and back home again. I buy a LOT of M&S food. This though, is a joke.

Not everybody is in a crisis. Look atsome of the ridiculous posts on here.

My own eek moment....£13.40 for some basic hydrocortizone cream. £27.00 quid for conditioner and razors. Its madness.

I could afford to buy loads of them but I'd rather spend my money on other things. However, other people have different priorities so they might want to buy an expensive beef wellington. It's not necessarily about whether you can afford it.

beanbaggirs · 11/10/2025 17:23

Agree that no one has buy it but what a lovely way for a supermarket to underscore the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have-nots’. Lovely spirit of Christmas that.

This has always been the case

It's ok because that's what it cost.

The ones who are taking the Mick are the ones who expect everything for nothing (and are astonished when their employer goes the same way)

how can they actually think it’s ok
because WHY shouldn't they charge you the actual cost, and make a few pennies on top?

It's like the people constantly asking for "birthday cakes that don't cost the earth" and expect a hand-made, hand-decorated item taking hours and talent to do , but at supermarket prices.

The world would be a better place if we were all paying for the food actually cost, instead of expecting such cheap prices that we are sold complete and utter unhealthy crap.
