£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

As long as it doesn't have mushrooms in it...

It does have mushrooms

AhWeNoss · 11/10/2025 16:47

So don’t buy it then. Go to a cheaper supermarket for your Christmas shop and you’ll be able to get it cheaper I’m sure.

MummytoE · 11/10/2025 16:35

For the price I would want Tom to come to my house and cook it for me on Christmas morning😂

🤣🤣🤣

WildFlowerBees · 11/10/2025 16:50

I hope it’s a massive flop, Tom Kerridge makes shit food anyway. Those who have £195 to waste can go to Fortnum and Mason! I don’t know how M&S justify that.

ThatLadyLady · 11/10/2025 16:52

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:43

I know that, but cooking it yourself will always by better rather than a ready version! And if that’s what I wanted to cook then fair enough the portion size will be smaller too.

So don’t buy it?😂

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 16:52

@WildFlowerBees he seems to cook food that he adores, like ‘hearty’ comfort food, like triple cooked chips and steak and ale pie, nothing ever light with lots of flavours, I’ve watched all of his secrets of the pub kitchen.

It’s madness.

Agree that no one has buy it but what a lovely way for a supermarket to underscore the ‘haves’ vs the ‘have-nots’. Lovely spirit of Christmas that.

Why are they supposed to become registered charities for Christmas?

It’s not about whether I can afford it it’s not a whinge that I want it and can’t afford it. far from. It’s about fairness I guess it just seems supermarkets are. Charging what they like and it seems to be totally unchecked a single pensioner gets what around £200 a week ? Yet a single dish for a single meal costs the same - maybe it’s always been this way but it’s really outraged me this year

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

Whilst I have no intention of paying £195 for an M&S beef wellington for many reasons, I'm getting really tired of all the cost of living comments everywhere.

My partner and I both earn around the median UK salary as will many people. If I wanted to pay £195 for an M&S beef wellington this Christmas, I could.

I couldn't do it every week, like most people, but, like many, I could do it as a one off. If i wanted to. Which I don't.

I appreciate that some people feel absolutely crippled by the 'cost of living crisis', I don't buy that the majority do any more than I beleive that the majority on MN earn £100k+.

It's OK for shops to sell things you, I or anyone else can't afford. It's really OK.

Everyone prioritises what they spend their money on and make choices that affect their earning potential. Some people don't have that choice but experience it through circumstance. But not everyone is living on gruel and puddle water either.

Yeah I saw that. And there was a game pie for £165. I mean you still have to heat it and serve it and wash up after. If I was splurging that big I’d rather go out to eat somewhere nice.

teamonkey345 · 11/10/2025 16:56

@MummytoE and do the washing up😂😂

No of course not but I guess the poster realises the huge divide!

Surely this is a mistake? Do you have a link @Blueskybird ?

Littlemrsconfetti · 11/10/2025 16:58

Supply and demand. Don't buy it and they won't charge such high prices.

Firstworldproblems2025 · 11/10/2025 16:58

You think it’s “fair” for supermarkets to only sell things that everyone can afford?

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 16:32

It’s marks Christmas range it’s a Tom Kerridge one and it’s ridiculous, then again I am glad that the cow that lost it’s life isn’t worthless

As soon as I saw the post I suspected it would be Tom Kerridge.

He always charges ridiculous prices.

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:58

And you’d expect fortnum and mason to be the most expensive

And if people want to buy either, they will. Or they won't. Cost of living and pensions os irrelevant.

If they didn't think it would sell, they wouldn't be selling it.

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 17:01

@BatchCookBabe it is legit £195 !

You don't need a link. Just Google it.

SpottyAardvark · 11/10/2025 17:03

I won’t be buying that, but when you consider that fillet steak is around £70 per kilo at the moment, then add on the cost of the mushroom duxelles, chicken mousse and the fact that it will be hand-made & decorated in small numbers (as are M&S’s posh cakes) I can see how they get to £195. You could make your own for half that, obv, but it’s a complex, multi-process, special occasion dish which not everyone would have the confidence to tackle.

Firstworldproblems2025 · 11/10/2025 16:58

No of course not it’s about massive profit and inflated prices I just don’t think anyone can justify that price
