£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

What is that about.

The price of food!

The M&S prices this year have gone up. But I guess it’s more a moment of realisation that perhaps we aren’t in their target market. There absolutely will be people who pay their 2025 prices, and good luck to them.

Excited for the reductions post on Christmas Eve to see how cheap someone was able to grab one for 😬

As has been said many times on this thread, this is food to order. There won’t be any sold at knock down prices.

Tardigrade001 · 13/10/2025 18:21

Almost £200 for ultra-processed food🙄

Titsywoo · 13/10/2025 19:20

It's a lot but I'm pretty sure they will still sell out of it. It seems to be fashionable at the moment to eat expensive food (watching SM shows Harrods Food Hall has gone viral over the last year or so for example and M&S is getting more and more popular for food).

Personally my favourite pre made beef wellington is from Cook (£90 for six portions). I wouldn't bother making it myself - way too much faff!

Snakebite61 · 13/10/2025 12:03

We don't even buy a joint at Christmas, just have chicken fillets.

That sounds a bit less than joyful. Do you not celebrate Christmas, being of another faith? I am just feeling you are a bit left out, unless you have a bangers version of New Year.

NatalieW1907 · 13/10/2025 20:19

No way are you being unreasonable. That is outrageous. Did you say anything when buying it, i would have queried the price. Hope its good one of my favourite meals.

If he's got any nous he'll have swiped Gordon Ramsay's recipe.

The hard part in the UK is finding mushrooms that taste of anything. Revolting tasteless gack.

Allow me to help you out with the mushrooms. There are several specialists in Devon and Cornwall growing varieties other than chestnut and Portobello. Even Tesco buys them.

I mean it's expensive, and not something I'd be buying but if other people can afford to and want it that's up to them, and clearly their market research has said that they will sell at that price but I do wonder if the extra charged for this is actually spread among the people who created it, and I don't just mean the chef, I mean the farmer, and the people actually physically making it, or they get the same amount as they would for a £65 one and after they've given the chef his cut for using his recipe (which they should) if the rest just goes in the coffers of M&S?

Because that's when it becomes wrong for me, if it costs that much to make and sell with everyone involved getting a fair cut then that's one thing, but if they're paying rock bottom prices and then ramping that price up to sell it and pocket the profit, I think that's wrong.

Edited

Again, no one is forcing you or anyone, to buy this. Go home and make it from scratch yourself. I can't afford a Ferrari but I don't put whinging posts on here about it and am happy with the car I can afford. Good grief.

Papyrophile · 13/10/2025 21:25

I tend to agree with @SamPM . You don't have to buy anything. I can/could make a decent beef wellington, but I wouldn't. As I said upthread, I think it's a complete waste of delicious beef. Beef is never improved by being coated in pastry.

It baffles me that people fail to grasp that we live in a capitalist society. The people actually assembling this fancy Beef Wellington won't be paid any more per hour because they're handling a premium product. They'll still just be paid the standard hourly rate for production line work because people working on these lines are ten a penny.

My mum died 10 years ago and made beef wellington for Christmas the last year she was with us. The beef fillet from a local butcher was about £100. I can’t get worked up about this one.

It’s marks Christmas range it’s a Tom Kerridge one and it’s ridiculous, then again I am glad that the cow that lost it’s life isn’t worthless

To be fair, the cow didn't benefit in any way, poor thing 😢

bipbopdo · 14/10/2025 11:09

Sometimes I wonder if something is expensive or if I just can’t afford it. I imagine £195 is a fair price given the cost of high quality beef these days. We all got used to paying very little for food for a long time, but farmers are dealing with increased costs too and they don’t have the EU subsidies anymore. Food is definitely going to get even more expensive as time goes on.

Ah - here’s the statutory ingredients list, linked here, and now duly screenshotted

I don't think the money goes to the cow and it's family.

I'm curious as it looks relatively upf free to me? Processed, as in processes have occurred to make it, but upfs?

I haven't spoken to one single person in real life who doesn't think these prices are absolute bollocks. 😂 People on £80K a year in management, checkout operators on £15K a year, a hospital specialist on £125K, a vicar, a solicitor, police, teachers, and numerous people ranging from working class to upper class (landowners who live near me, old money.) Not ONE person thinks that £195 for a beef wellington for 6 people is a reasonable amount. Everyone finds it farcical, and would not buy it - even if they can afford it - as the price is ludicrous.

A few people will buy it though, just to say they did, and to pretend they're loaded. 😆 And they will tell EVERYONE they bought it and how much they paid!

Well, it sold out some time ago according to The Sunday Times, so enough people were willing to pay the price :)

Doverboy · 30/11/2025 14:46

$35/head is not outrageous in a restaurant, in fact it is on the low side. $195/home you could do it for less quite easily.

Rpop · 30/11/2025 16:08

The point is that it’s the restaurant range from m and s. Meant to be more like eating out. Trying to fill the hole in the market left by fewer people eating out.

Somersetbaker · 30/11/2025 16:41

Fillet steak is nearly £100 a kilo in my local butcher, so it doesn't seem that bad. You're not being forced to buy it.

Yep, there were only 2,000 available and all have been bought.

Papyrophile · 30/11/2025 19:56

Fillet is about £55 per kilo around here on the Devon Cornwall border @Somersetbaker so have a nice day out!
