£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

I make my own . Never ever would I pay that greedy price. They should be ashamed of themselves

Yoyokitten · 11/10/2025 17:04

On the link above for Fortnam and Mason, Wagyu fore rib of beef is £350 !!.
Makes the beef wellington seem cheap !!

mynameiscalypso · 11/10/2025 17:04

I’m not a fan of beef wellington - and we have to cater for coeliacs so - so I’m not the target market but I did an M&S Christmas Food shop earlier and was pleasantly surprised at some of the other prices. We got our main, some sides, starters and desserts (x 3) for less than £150 which I didn’t think was extortionate for the quality.

NetZeroZealot · 11/10/2025 17:05

My butcher charges £95 for a beef wellington for 6, it’s pretty good .

M&S is a premium food range though. I’d expect to pay more than at Asda. And I’d expect decent quality too.

WallaceinAnderland · 11/10/2025 17:05

I don't think it's too bad. It's obviously not something most people would buy for a regular meal but if it's a special treat, dinner party sort of thing, all done for you it's ok. Much cheaper than eating out.

Remember - Everything is worth what the purchaser will pay for it.

TheProvincialLady · 11/10/2025 17:05

It’s fair that Marks and Spencer sells a beef wellington that lots of people would find too expensive but it’s not fair that they sell one that you find too expensive because there is a cost of living crisis? If you’re shopping at M&S you aren’t living on the breadline. They can sell what they like and if people want to buy it and can afford to, what’s the problem? Presumably they won’t try again if people can’t afford it and therefore don’t buy it.

No of course not but I guess the poster realises the huge divide!

The more money someone has, the more expensive things they can afford.

It's really simple.

It does have mushrooms

This was a joke relating to the ‘mushroom murders’ where a woman was found guilty earlier this year for poisoning her dinner guests via the mushrooms she added to her beef wellington.

How long does it take you & how much do the ingredients cost?

Shellyash · 11/10/2025 17:06

Is that the Erin Patterson recipe? I know it sounds expensive but so long as you have the right company....

ThrowAway987654321 · 11/10/2025 17:06

I don't think is is inflated. Fillet beef is incredibly expensive, and to serve 6, it does make sense.

PinkiOcelot · 11/10/2025 17:06

You been reading the Christmas food catalogue? The turkeys are really expensive as well. Joke!!

rainbowunicorn22 · 11/10/2025 17:08

some daft sods will buy it. stick a celebrity name on something and they will buy any old thing

vincettenoir · 11/10/2025 16:55

Yeah I saw that. And there was a game pie for £165. I mean you still have to heat it and serve it and wash up after. If I was splurging that big I’d rather go out to eat somewhere nice.

I fancy that but I can't find.

Yamamm · 11/10/2025 17:08

My friend made one the other week and reckoned it had cost about 125 for the ingredients. Seems OK to me to charge what they are for what it is. Do you moan that there is wine that costs £50 a bottle?

I’m not sure it is a greedy price, it depends on the quality of ingredients and how it was cooked and by who. It’s a high price, but looking at it. I’d expect it to be top end. Yes you can make it cheaper yourself, like most things, but depending on the skill set of the chef, jot necessarily better.

No of course not it’s about massive profit and inflated prices I just don’t think anyone can justify that price

I should think their profit margin is similar on most stuff they sell. This is a premium product with a short shelf life made to order so it will cost more.

I expect you could buy one at Iceland for a lot less but it won’t be as good.

FreyjaOfTheNorth · 11/10/2025 17:10

If you can’t afford it, don’t buy it and move on. Not everyone is struggling.

YANBU. I also think it’s part of clever marketing. Charge £195 for a beef wellington and suddenly £95 for a titivated roast chicken doesn’t look too bad. Maybe that example isn’t the best, but in principle, having a few elevated priced items will eventually bump up prices of the cheaper stuff as we get used to inflation and rationalise crazy prices.

As another poster said, it’s not like the supermarkets are suffering due to increased costs; their profits are huge.

It’s a joke. We as consumers need to remember to use our power. Keep buying the cheapest and the supermarkets will have to keep offering it (hopefully anyway!)

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:39

Oh there’s always one… they are demanding ……it that’s the price !

Are Louis Vuitton demanding £5k for a bag?

NetZeroZealot · 11/10/2025 17:12

Perhaps M& S should stop selling vintage champagne at Xmas too because most folk can only afford Prosecco.

You ain’t going anywhere nice on Xmas day where 6 people eat for 200 pounds.

CalzoneOnLegs · 11/10/2025 17:13

@Brainworm oh okay 🤣 I thought the poster may have been allergic, sorry and thanks for explaining 🤣

Northernladdette · 11/10/2025 17:14

Are they frozen? If not, I have a vision of them all being sold off cheap on Christmas Eve 🤣
