£195 for a beef wellington!

Just that really, are supermarkets now taking the absolute Micky?? I know I don’t have to buy it. I know no one is forcing me to. But seriously how can they actually think it’s ok to demand that price for a Beef wellington that serves 6. Granted it’s in the celebrity chef Christmas range and I’m well aware that we all have different budgets and I absolutely expect to pay for quality but come on, that’s a scandalous price. AIBU to think we have lost the plot with food pricing or would you pay it?

Yep M&S honestly in the middle of a cost of living crisis !

So shops should only offer (offer, not demand) own brand basics?

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 17:37

LaChouette · 11/10/2025 17:36

Fillet tail. It is part of the fillet. Not the literal tail.

Oh thank God! 😂😂

BlueSlate · 11/10/2025 17:37

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 17:32

Absolutely of course they have to have a range for every budget …. This just seems beyond reasonable to me

Why though?

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 17:37

I thought the same as you 🤣

Seaside3 · 11/10/2025 17:39

I'd rather hope that the pensioners receiving £200 have the sense to not buy what they can't afford. Much like the rest of us.

What price do you think is acceptable? @Blueskybird

Already there are several.people saying it cost them over £100 to make at home... and that doesn't include any pay for the time it cost to look up the recipe, shop and make it. So it seems reasonable on that context.

botheredandbewilderedagain · 11/10/2025 17:39

OP is going to collapse when she hears the price of a designer handbag or dress....because COL 🙄

You can't afford stuff, including M&S food, then don't buy it.
You can afford it but don't want it, then suit yourself and don't buy it.
The performative outrage though, is unnecessary.

You think it’s “fair” for supermarkets to only sell things that everyone can afford?

This is what it sounds like. I don't have that kind of money, so I don’t buy it. There are other options. And no one is owed a specific meal.

Meat is expensive. Not actually a surprise at this point.

TeaAndTattoos · 11/10/2025 17:40

DontCallMeLenYouLittleBollix · 11/10/2025 17:35

I would actually guess that the majority of the population probably have £195 to spend on something they think is sufficiently important. Particularly as Christmas is an annual event that people often save up for, and also because some families split food costs.

But most of those people probably don't want to (I wouldn't) which is not the same thing.

£195 for just meat seems like a lot to me even if you save up all year. That’s how much my family spend on Christmas food for 4 people.

beanbaggirs · 11/10/2025 17:40

Do people really have that much to spend on just one meal?

of course some people do!

Charlenedickens · 11/10/2025 17:40

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 17:32

Then buy the cheaper beef wellington , they serve one for 60 quid, doesn’t have the truffles, chicken and gravy etc to be fair. But does have the mushrooms. It’s not like they don’t have a range and you can’t buy at the bottom end. You don’t need to buy the most expensive one, like you don’t need to buy the most expensive champagne,

£195 for a beef wellington!

flowrrpoh · 11/10/2025 17:33

Yes, they do. Are you totally unaware of the wealth some people have?

I'm not wealthy but I could afford it if I wanted to (I don't so I won't).

A lot of people could.

Exactly. There's lots of people who pay over £1000 for a phone, it costs about £60 per person to go to Toby Carvery on Christmas Day and it's probably packed. People pay over a fiver for a bucket of weak coffee with a load of crappy syrup in, look at how many people have botox or their teeth whitened, the list of expensive unnecessary stuff that people can spend their money on is endless.

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 17:43

DreamyTealGuide · 11/10/2025 17:29

what fairness are you on about? It's a business, not a charity.

Why on earth should they only sell the lowest items, lowest prices and lowest quality?

I don't even understand your reasoning. Supermarkets sell things you can't afford, or don't want to spend money on. So?

Maybe I’m not very good at explaining myself I am not saying they should only sell cheap stuff , of course they should sell to suit all budgets. We all expect special food at Christmas to be more expensive the fairness I’m referring to is for that one particular dish, it’s really inflated for a mass produced ready dish. Granted IT IS a time consuming fiddly and expensive meal to prepare but even so

SinnerBoy · 11/10/2025 17:43

Blimey! I wouldn't pay that. I've only ever bought fillet beef once, there was a new woman in the butchers and she asked what I was after.

"A nice beef joint for roasting," I said.

"Oh, we've got this," she told me, putting it on the scale. 1.3 Kg, OK I said. She rang it through at £54 and I was too embarrassed to say that I hadn't realised that was so steep!

When I got home, I said it had better be bloody good and my word, it was melt in the mouth.

BeWaryFinch · 11/10/2025 17:43

Folk have gotten far too used to cheap meat, and you shouldn't be able to buy an entire chicken for £ <5. I buy organic meat from a local farm. I don't think a beef wellington should cost £150 - but you want to eat part of an animal that died so we could eat it, and the cost of the meat reflects the welfare it had when it was alive as well

CrystalShoe · 11/10/2025 17:43

BatchCookBabe · 11/10/2025 17:16

Exactly. I can afford it too. I'm just not batshit enough to buy it.

Exactly!

Ah, I miss the days when people like the OP would have been called one of the professionally offended.

Haven't seen that in years.

Not actually impacted by the issue personally but feigning outrage on behalf of people who aren't as fortunate as her in having the choice.

I suspect that it hand done. The mass produced will be the 60 quid one.

I don't think is is inflated. Fillet beef is incredibly expensive, and to serve 6, it does make sense.

Fortnum and Mason's BW serve 6-8 and "only" costs 120 pounds! I think the Marks one must be an inflated price, probably because of the celeb-chef branding.

Yes, it is a lot. Although not at all for some people. But that's my point really. You're evidently in around that budget- you could choose to eg forego other Christmas treat food in order to be able to afford this, but you don't want to. You have the money but think there is a better use for it. Some people will think this is the best use for their Christmas budget, some will be able to have it without thinking, others will be doing it as a cheaper alternative to eating out.

It won't be mass produced. No one will be going in and picking one off the shelf. They're made to order.

But people who are in the market for a £195 beef Wellington won't have to save up all year, they'll just buy it. It's not aimed at people who need to save up to afford Christmas.

So... Don't... Buy... It.

The target market wouldn't be saving up all year for that price. 🙄

LaChouette · 11/10/2025 17:45

Blueskybird · 11/10/2025 16:54

It’s not about whether I can afford it it’s not a whinge that I want it and can’t afford it. far from. It’s about fairness I guess it just seems supermarkets are. Charging what they like and it seems to be totally unchecked a single pensioner gets what around £200 a week ? Yet a single dish for a single meal costs the same - maybe it’s always been this way but it’s really outraged me this year

Why does there need to be fairness between a single pensioner and someone buying a beef wellington for 6 people? It isn't a single dish for a single meal. It is a luxury entertaining meal for 6. A truly individual beef wellington is going to be around £30-40.

And all the comparisons to other vendors aren't taking into account that the M&S one is 2.1 kg vs the others all being around 1.1 kg. Take that into account and the prices look a lot more comparable.
