Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

Yes I think the new formulation is slightly different and I have also only seen the 100ml bottle. I wonder why that is. It isn't something I noticed until you mentioned it.

I still have my original bottle from early 2000s with a few squirts left. It is quite strong of course, but that has not turned. So the turning must be due to whatever formulation they decided to mess around with. I hate that they have had to do that to so many scents.

The older version would last days, this one has good staying power like for all day, but nothing like the staying power of the original.

It's still my go to though.

( I just went to check my latest one. I keep it in a drawer in it box. It has not altered at all, and I have had it over a year. Do you keep yours out and in the light maybe?)

No, I always keep my perfumes in their boxes. Saying that, I did hit perimenopause around the same time, so it could be my nose which is a bit off! It just suddenly started smelling ultra powdery all of a sudden. If I’d bought it from eBay I’d have assumed it was a fake, but it was directly from Boots. I adored it when it was first launched ❤️

LuffyMe · 13/10/2025 12:48

Floral Street Black Lotus, on paper, it sounded perfect. In reality it was vile and wouldn't wash off for ages.

deste · 13/10/2025 12:53

coffeelipstickkeys we are snippy today aren’t we and you couldnt be further from the truth. I dont even know what perfume any of my friends use but i know its not Creed.
Not once did i refer to any brand of label being cheap, unlike you. Strange how you picked my post to reply to when the majority of the thread is dissing perfumes left right and centre when actually that was what the post was about. Perhaps you didn’t read the whole thread but not to worry I’m glad you got that off your chest.

I think this is the new formulation. It is about 95% the same as the original but not exact. Yes I think it is slightly more powdery.

But, the one I have is a full size tester bottle. It wasn't opened when I got it so had not been out in the light etc. I think no-one can convince me now that tester bottles are not slightly stronger than the normal stock versions.

I have thought this for a while now, and I think I did just prove the theory. As I received a tester (2ml tiny spray bottle) of Lancôme Idole Power (which is stunning, you might like this being a Dune lover), and I used this tiny bottle for a week as I needed the tiniest spray. And both of my dc commented on how beautiful it was, and it lasted all day. So I bought the full bottle. From Lancôme directly so not at all a dupe or parallel import. It is just not the same as that tiny sample bottle. One spray of the full size bottle does not give as much Power as one squirt from the sample at all.

So that was a bit of a long story to say that maybe it's not your nose, but Dune's new formulation, but into the shop stock bottles.

HorrorAndHaagenDazs · 13/10/2025 12:59

I love and collect fragrances. Usually wear mens though as find womens stuff too sweet usually.
Don't have anything that makes me recoil, gag, head to the fainting couch or nearly die because i'm not an epic drama queen.

anon666 · 13/10/2025 13:22

This started really recently for me, I'm not sure what changed, so im blaming menopause.

There are certain artificial fragrances that i absolutely can't stand. Its not 100% of them, but when they're present it majorly gives me the ick.

So I've sought out purely natural fragrances since then.

deeahgwitch · 13/10/2025 13:32

I think the worst smelling perfume for me was the spray of Serge Lutens Tubèruse Criminalle I applied in House of Fraser Dublin God I miss that shop.
The smell was horrendous and that’s saying something considering Angel brings on a migraine almost.

I tried a tester of a La Perla perfume in a department store and it was lovely. I caught whisps of it on my watch, jacket for days after and it was gorgeous. I bought a bottle from the same store, and all I got was stinky vanilla. I even bought a bottle from another store and 👎

Could be something in your theory.

Google has all sorts of theories, but swears it is all the same stuff. Maybe its the size of the bottle that makes a difference, maybe its matured or from a different batch. I don't know the answer, but as long as I can get hold of testers, that is the way I am going. As from my experience, there is a difference. And I have a few so it is not just one random bottle that I am referring to.

Which La Perla did you buy? I recently parted with my La Mia, as I used to love it, but for some reason I just stopped loving it. My mum has searched high and low for her holy grail, the original La Perla, but sadly that was discontinued. So I gave her this one, which is totally not the same, but she likes it more than me. I did get it at a very reasonable price in a mega sale when they split from Revlon, but I really wanted to find the original for her.

I have gone right off topic I know.

Yes, it was La Mia. I was so disappointed. I did wear it, I was complemented on it a few times but it was never the same for me.

My daughter (15) likes sweet, vanilla fragrances so she might use it.

deeahgwitch · 13/10/2025 08:33

I’m surprised you put the perfume down the sink @FilterBubble
I’m very conscious of what I put down the sink because of the water cycle.
Water is a precious commodity and the less contaminated it is, the better.
I don’t use fabric conditioner for this reason as it is not necessary.
Every little helps, as they say.

The reasoning... I thought that perhaps there was a chance that the water works might treat it, whereas a bottle in the landfill perhaps isn't so good! Like many household chemicals where do people think they end up? There's no magic place to take them. Chemicals taken down the household refuse centre cost a fortune to dispose of - there should be a point of sale disposal tax, or perhaps make them so they aren't damaging to the environment in the first place? Quite why people would choose to smear this crap on themselves if it's damaging.

I guess there is a question, does anyone like men's fragrances? (I'm not talking about the 10 minute bathroom exclusion zone.)

I read quite a lot of reviews on it before I gave mine away, and a lot of people use it for a night scent. So I thought that meant for going out at night. No no, they meant for spraying on before going to bed.

Now I love perfume, but in the day/going out at night. I have never sprayed a perfume on, to get into bed. But then again I am very single and so maybe this is something that has become a thing since😀

DrAmeliaShepherdMD · 13/10/2025 02:20

I get a lot of compliments when I wear La Vie Est Belle but it’s only just occurred to me that people apply perfumes differently and therefore the end result is different. I only ever apply two squirts of any perfume, one to the neck and one to the wrist, any more than that and the likes of La Vie Est Belle or Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming would get overpowering. Maybe that’s part of the problem, people overdo it

I completely agree and it's a newish habit I think. Something like Chanel no 5 or Youth Dew should be a mere one dab on the wrist. To squirt all over yourself you need something extremely modern and light maybe D&G Light Blue?

I currently have on one tiny dab of Knowing by Estee Lauder on one wrist and it's glorious. Any more and I'd be offensive, even to myself.

I love Aramis, the original old school one. I tried a dab on myself but it's just far too masculine. So I bought it for my son 🤣 he'll wear anything I put in his bedroom.

Some perfumes are niche / discontinued and you can sell them on ebay. I recently sold Aramis Calligraphy Rose. I used to love it but then grew to loathe it.

AeriatedAnna · 13/10/2025 14:37

YANBU. They probably don’t wash so wear the strong stuff to mask the smell, but it does not work!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 13/10/2025 14:37

I rarely have a problem with perfumes but I hate the strong, artificially fabric softeners people insist on using.

It smells “grainy” to me - but I wonder if it’s an ND thing because I think visualising / giving texture to smells is very ND?

mrwwhite · 13/10/2025 14:42

People talking about overdoing etc. I find most people go completely nose-blind to a fragrance after the first wear resulting in them spraying the fuck out of themselves forever after chasing the first hit high.

I do occasionally wear perfume to bed, especially ones that I love that are controversial! There’s so much nostalgia wrapped up in them, it’s comforting.

Yes, I have a couple, but my all time (discontinued) favourite is Gucci pour Homme (the 2003 one). I would probably give all my others away for a couple of bottles of this.

I definitely agree with you regarding tester bottles. I managed to get one from eBay for another fragrance and it was stronger and richer. Thank you, I will try the Lancôme fragrance

I'm from the era of Hai Karate, Old Spice and Brut and my ex husband used to wear Aramis and Blue Stratos. When Brut first came out, the smell as you went into the discos from all the men wearing Brut was enough to knock you sideways.

Brut always reminds me of my dad, he wore it a lot in the 70s and after he we sold his house when he went into care, I found a large bottle of it. My brother quickly declined having it. 😆

I really like Eau Sauvage, I had a boyfriend in the mid 70s who wore it and I'm pretty sure it added to my attraction, I loved him wearing it.

SteakBakesAndHotTakes · 13/10/2025 16:21

I hate the strong fabric softener/scent booster smell. They all smell the same, overly sweet and chemically.

That has been on my want list forever! Maybe I should be glad i never found it.
I have the Aramis Calligraphy Saffron and still like it a lot, though not as much as others.

I own a lot of perfume. I try different ones all the time but now am going to need to pare down the amount and stop being tempted by everyone that gets released.
