Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

I love perfume, but anything with Oud makes me wheeze, especially as people seem to drench themselves in it. No worries about scented washing powder in our house as it give DH hives

Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

I'm with you on that. Cloying in the extreme!

Auburngal · 12/10/2025 20:09

A former colleague/friend sprayed so much Gloria Vanderbilt (the original) that couldn’t cope much more

Hotflushesandchilblains · 12/10/2025 20:13

I love perfume and have a large collection. But unless you are hugging me, you would not smell anything.

RedBullBlood · 12/10/2025 20:18

I loved Aromatics and wore it all the time in the 80s. A woman I worked with came up to me one day and practically begged me to stop using it as I gave her headaches every day. We were both mortified!

GreenFritillary · 12/10/2025 20:20

It's considered bad manners among people I know to wear synthetic scents - perfume, aftershave, deodorant - as they make so many people unwell.

Rive Gauche. Revolting and I was frequently forced to smell it as a colleague used to spray it all over her clothes a few times a day like a cheap body spray. When I saw that black and blue bottle I'd cringe. She also waxed lyrical about her M&S purchases like it was bloody Harrods.

Rive Gauche is my most hated scent too. Along with LouLou if anyone remembers that. My mother wore Rive Gauche for a while and it gave me terrible travel sickness. LouLou used to make me feel nauseous. Also dislike Poison, Angel, anything overly sugary.
I love perfume to the point of obsession though.

I love Youth Dew, it reminds me of a friend’s lovely Mum dressed to go out. She died far too young, in her fifties, and she was always so glamorous.
I’ve never worn it but I like the bath oil at Christmas.

Oh, I love tuberose in a candle- my very favourite- so I might like it in a perfume. Which ones would you recommend?

Fracas is the best imo.

SuperBlondie28 · 12/10/2025 20:45

Chanel No 5.

Never smelt til recently. My colleague wears it occasionally. It's so strong it's giving me an instant headache. Horrible scent!

violetpink · 12/10/2025 20:52

Angel. Absolutely vile.
Smells strongly of wet dog.

Pawparazzi · 12/10/2025 20:58

I don't think anyone has mentioned 'Sun, Moon, Stars'. It's discontinued but I've kept a few MLS in a bottle because I love the smell. Reminds me of teaching in Kuwait in the 90's.
My faves:
Chanel No 5
Poison
Rive Gauche
CK1
CK Shout
Bulgari
Coty L'Aiment
My mother worked in the last Revlon factory in the UK (as did I in my student holidays) and would come home absolutely drenched in Charlie because of the bottles bursting on the production lines as they were being crimped.

Taste is personal opinion - live with it - somebody else might think that your chosen fragrance smells like mothballs wrapped in boiled cabbage leaves - does that make them wrong ?

CoffeeLipstickKeys · 12/10/2025 21:16

These perfume threads always go the same way. A List of perfume that posters convulse, gag and hallucinate when they encounter it. Perfumes I love and wear are listed as ghastly and gag worthy😂. As is evident Perfume is s very subjective topic

FilterBubble · 12/10/2025 21:27

There does seem to be a theme that many perfumes give people migraines. This part I would like to understand. I dumped a bottle of perfume down the sink the other week (where are you supposed to recycle/dispose of these?). And felt rapidly awful, unsettled and head muddy. The smallest dab however much I scrubbed would not leave me. I had to go outside for fresh air in the end.

One flat-mate I lived with used to wear a perfume that smelled like rat piss (I used to keep rats, so the smell was instantly recognisable, and I have to say the real thing was more pleasant). And oddly enough one washing powder I bought also had the same scent, not that I can remember the brand. I guess some people enjoy it.

Interesting to read that perfumes can appear differently depending on who wears them.

I do get that some scents, like tastes can grow on you, especially given positive association. However I'm frequently met with smells that I find absolutely hideous and viscerally upsetting. It's actually a relief to find so many others here having similar responses. Perhaps those that go for the full-on douse, just get nose blind. I can be triggered by washing hanging a few doors down.

did you really pour perfume away? Why? Give it away at work? Free cycle? How did you wrestle the spray lid off it
I love perfume and I apply it liberally and top up during the day.

InSpainTheRain · 12/10/2025 21:40

I can't bear all the strongly fragranced laundry products, nor do I like the artificial perfumes. Probably this stems from the fact that I seem to have some sort of allergy to them so they often bring on a migraine. I only use ecover unfragranced for laundry, Soley organics (icelandic brand) for shower/hair to treat myself, Simple products for everyday and Method for home cleaning. I realise I am completely unreasonable, but I wish all the scented stuff would disappear!

Why would I want to give it away and inflict that malodorous rankness upon others? If only I could gather all the nasties and throw the lot into Mount Doom.

Yes that’s right Chanel, Mugler, YSL and Lancôme all putrid and fetid as the multimillion sales suggest. Millions of women smelling like hot dog water they’ve sprayed too liberally

deste · 12/10/2025 22:40

I love perfume and wear it all the time but only a light spray. My favourites are Chanel Chance and there are a few different ones Mademoiselle and one or two Joe Malone perfumes.
I can smell cheap perfumes and aftershaves a mile off, thanks to Covid I have developed a strange ability to smell something vile in them, a smell that comes at the end not sure what it is but I can. I only get it from cheaper perfumes. I couldn’t be around someone who wore cheap perfume.

Estee Lauder Youth Dew.

Oh I hate this too!
My sister used to love this and her little boy once poured a whole bottle down my toilet, I don’t know who was more upset; sis with her birthday present getting flushed or me having to fumigate my flat! 🤢
I feel the same about the scent of vanilla…it’s everywhere 😱

mrlistersgelfbride · 12/10/2025 23:09

I like most scents but I don’t like Angel despite wearing it years ago.

Chanel 5 and Co co mademoiselle I do find a bit strong and over powering. My mum wears Red door and whilst it’s strong I do like it.
Joop men and Lynx Africa remind me of my youth as do the early Britney perfumes.

I am definitely not averse to most scents like a lot of people on this thread! I had no idea people disliked perfumes so much!

XWKD · 12/10/2025 23:14

I love perfume, but it irritates my nose. I like a single spray to the back of the neck. I then just get the odd gentle reminder throughout the day so I don't go noseblind, and nobody else can smell it unless they hug me. Keeping a bottle in my bag gives my nose a nice treat when I open it.

My main problem is that some people tend to wear too much of it. My nose stings when I'm in the company of some people, or sitting beside them on public transport.
