Repulsive perfumes

I like natural fragrances, like the scent of lavender, some essential oils etc. But for some reason artificial scents like in washing powder and perfumes make me want to gag. They really unsettle me. What's that all about?

YABU - I smell gorgeous when I put three cups of fabric softener in the machine, and adorn myself with a bath of duty-free spoils.

YANBU - People overdo fragrances, they are tacky and make me want to gag too.

Came here to say Angel and see, with joy, that many have beaten me to it. My flatmate wore this in the 90s and it used to make me feel physically sick. I remember being told that it has pachouli and chocolate as it's base notes, which goes a long way to explaining why its so cloying. Vile stuff.

Yes to Poison and also Giorgio Beverley Hills which smelt like someone had mixed every perfume in the world together and then chucked in a bottle of 12 year old £2.99 Peach schnapps.

I love perfume and wear it all the time but only a light spray. My favourites are Chanel Chance and there are a few different ones Mademoiselle and one or two Joe Malone perfumes.
I can smell cheap perfumes and aftershaves a mile off, thanks to Covid I have developed a strange ability to smell something vile in them, a smell that comes at the end not sure what it is but I can. I only get it from cheaper perfumes. I couldn’t be around someone who wore cheap perfume.

Define cheap? High street? Next?M&S?Zara? Is there a tolerable price point
Presumably you and your friends wear Creed and Marc Jacob? You’ll be with the Mugler and Chanel crew then?so many questions - How does one spend a day? Do you don a gas mask for public outings were there will inevitably be cheap perfume ?
I know I’m being chippy, but seriously how does one avoid high street perfumes

ladyland · 13/10/2025 01:16

I’m trying to decide which stink bomb to wear today:
Yvress
Ombre Rose
Dune

Leaning Yvress…

I get a lot of compliments when I wear La Vie Est Belle but it’s only just occurred to me that people apply perfumes differently and therefore the end result is different. I only ever apply two squirts of any perfume, one to the neck and one to the wrist, any more than that and the likes of La Vie Est Belle or Miss Dior Absolutely Blooming would get overpowering. Maybe that’s part of the problem, people overdo it

Depends on definition of overdo. 2 spray total, that’s miserly and measured. V specific. For me perfume is olfactory I want to experience it too,and that takes more than 2 spray total.

deeahgwitch · 13/10/2025 08:33

I’m surprised you put the perfume down the sink @FilterBubble
I’m very conscious of what I put down the sink because of the water cycle.
Water is a precious commodity and the less contaminated it is, the better.
I don’t use fabric conditioner for this reason as it is not necessary.
Every little helps, as they say.

Really?? That’s more than enough for me. I think this explains why some people “overdo” it in the eyes of others. Their sense of smell can’t be as strong otherwise they wouldn’t apply as much. If I sprayed more than twice, even of my favourite scent, I’d get a headache.

I used to wear Hugo Boss Deep Red, but it made the cat sneeze so I stopped 😂. So even pets have sensitive noses.

Worralorra · 13/10/2025 09:03

Terrribletwos · 10/10/2025 19:46

Alien...bloody hate it. It smells like zoflora.

It smells amazing on me, but not on others. I was quite shocked that someone on whom it smelled completely different had purchased it because I wore it, and they loved it, and was disappointed that it didn’t smell the same on them…
Poison also used to make me gag, and agree with the comments about Lynx Africa!

I used to wear Jean Paul Gaultier Classique had done for years, then a friend decided she liked it. It smelt so different on her that I never wore it again. I now smell it on so many people it has lost its uniqueness.

Dune is my absolute go to perfume and it was not available for quite a long time and I felt a bit lost. I have worn it since the 90s and still do. And I could not even count the amount of compliments I have received while wearing it. Never once has someone mentioned it has given them a headache....

But I do get this is would only suit some people, but it is hardly offensive. So if I can sway you for which to wear today....... 😀

I only ever spray one squirt. It doesn't matter what perfume it is.

Where I place it depends on what I am wearing really.

This might be why I do not know of one person who has been offended by how I smell.

But then again, I also did not know that so many people get so offended by other peoples perfume and washing powder until reading this thread.

I really don't want to say this, as I might be accused of being and internal misogynist and ageist to boot. However I am a fifty year old woman, and I'm now in that category, so here goes. Lots of women seem to get to my perimenopausal age and want to cloak their own smell/scent and so really overdo it with the body spray and perfume. I read a thread here recently about certain scents you start naturally producing as you age, and I can remember the "old lady" smell of my grandma from when I was a child. Is some of the overuse of perfume to try and counteract that?

Is this old lady smell inevitable as we age, and will a good soap tackle it rather than horrible artificial perfume which ends up smelling much worse?

KimberleyClark · 13/10/2025 09:56

I’ve seen some negative comments about Rive Gauche. I loved it back in the 80s, it was really popular. I haven’t smelled it recently and wonder if the formulation has changed.

There was a recent thread on this very subject, it was quite interesting really.

The vast majority of those in the know, recommended using persimmon soap.

In the menopause section, called Does anyone else smell funny.

YouMightLikeCats · 13/10/2025 10:00

People's "ability" (as it were) to smell really varies. I can smell burnt toast from another room where my husband is oblivious. He does admit to having a poor sense of smell. He brought spraypainted craft stuff into the kitchen yesterday and the smell of the paint fumes was awful yet it barely registered with him.

So, much of the different tolerances (not to specific scents, in general) must be at least partly down to differences between the olfactory sensitivity of the sprayer and the smeller!

WestwardHo1 · 13/10/2025 10:03

Smells do weird things to me. Getting a waft of someone's mint or chewing gum I actually find physically upsetting and repellent.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 13/10/2025 10:11

InSpainTheRain · 12/10/2025 21:40

I can't bear all the strongly fragranced laundry products, nor do I like the artificial perfumes. Probably this stems from the fact that I seem to have some sort of allergy to them so they often bring on a migraine. I only use ecover unfragranced for laundry, Soley organics (icelandic brand) for shower/hair to treat myself, Simple products for everyday and Method for home cleaning. I realise I am completely unreasonable, but I wish all the scented stuff would disappear!

But Method products are very (unpleasantly, IMO) scented. The worst is that ylang ylang shower spray stuff that does nothing, except stink your bathroom out.

MushroomPuff · 13/10/2025 10:16

I've never really been a perfume-wearer. Sometimes I like the smell on other people but I find it hard to recreate it on myself! I don't know how people stand to work in department stores or airports however, where the smell is just so strong it gives me an instant headache. As for fabric conditioner, I stopped using it entirely a few years ago. It's just such a con.

I absolutely LOVE Dune. Unfortunately I can only find it in 100ml bottles, and it always seems to turn before I’m even half way through it. I’ve also had lots of compliments when wearing it

Yes I think the new formulation is slightly different and I have also only seen the 100ml bottle. I wonder why that is. It isn't something I noticed until you mentioned it.

I still have my original bottle from early 2000s with a few squirts left. It is quite strong of course, but that has not turned. So the turning must be due to whatever formulation they decided to mess around with. I hate that they have had to do that to so many scents.

The older version would last days, this one has good staying power like for all day, but nothing like the staying power of the original.

It's still my go to though.

( I just went to check my latest one. I keep it in a drawer in it box. It has not altered at all, and I have had it over a year. Do you keep yours out and in the light maybe?)
