To wonder why so many pensioners are supporting Palestine Action, even willing to risk prison for it ?

Palestine Action showed their true colours a long time ago. I strongly oppose a lot of Netanyahu's actions- I don't object to a protest for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. That wasn't Palestine Action's agenda, though.

I would've thought people 60+ would have, on average, accumulated more wisdom. Young people have often been swept up into radical movements with dangerous agendas (look at 60s protestors who thought Castro & co.were nice etc). It's no excuse..but is a BIT easier to see why young people (student age) might fall for this kind of stuff. Also people now seem to have less media literacy, esp SM.

But why are 60+ year olds getting caught up in it?? Willing to go to prison? What is going on? This hasn't happened before with stuff like BLM or Extinction Rebellion, so what us going on now?

@Yriovd 💯 and I didn’t condemn the Irish resistance or the anc fight against apartheid either. I despise the necessity for violent conflict but sadly peaceful protest goes nowhere. Even the suffragettes had to resort to action.
all life lost is wholly desperate and awful but the blame is firmly on the side of the aggressors.

But presumably you despise English people flying English flags IN ENGLAND. They were doing so because they feel their identity is being destroyed. However, it’s OK to video yourself tearing down those flags while a crowd cheers, which is what happened near me. People have every right to protect their culture and identity…so long as they’re not English. The English are having a new identity imposed on them, and they’d better celebrate (or else).

Haven't RTFT but also has anyone suggested that being in prison means you don't freeze to death over winter ?

Anyone remember the Doris Lessing story ?

Sharing a cell with a criminal, a toilet in the corner? I don't think so.

Initially no one knew they were a terrorist group -or at least I didn’t -

Didn't they cause millions of pounds of damage to army planes?

Some damage, yes (not sure of the value).

But that's not what terrorism means.

HerewardtheSleepy · 10/10/2025 17:58

Pensioners are the Vietnam generation. We've seen "protest" with CS gas and riot police ("Special Patrol Group" anyone?).

What passes for "protest" today is little more than a Sunday school picnic. It's simply a day out.

I think you need to look more at the 75+ for people who voted for Brexit.
Oh and I’m 65 and still working full time, as are most of my office colleagues, defo not pensioners yet, unfortunately!

I'm 68 and working as I have no choice. Despise Bexit.

Hilarious the ageism.

It's coming your way

It's not the UN and others NGOs that are refusing - its that Israel and the US havent been letting them in, insisting instead that only the US-Israeli venture, the GHF, carry out all distributions (and who, it seems, are either inept or malicious). It is not clear if the UN and others, typical aide-distributors will now be allowed in.

I think it's a touchstone issue for left wing people of a certain age.

That's incorrect, the older pensioners were more likely to vote Remain, because they'd live through the war, of its recent aftermath. Living in bombed out towns and seeing fathers and other male relatives come home blind, maimed, or mad led them to conclude:

War is a big, hairy bag of wank; co-operation is far superior.

Brilliant, what a great survey.

I'm sick of this shite about rich pensioners voting for Brexit.
I'm not rich.It was the worst thing ever, started by Cameron for a laugh. Wrecked this country totally.

I never said they are rich. Possibly it has more to do with where they live.

The THREAD is about pensioners.

Make your mind up about your topic.

I see my "topic" has sadly gone whooshing over your head.

Perhaps they see the deaths of 12,000 innocent children as worth protesting. Surely the question should be “why don’t you?”

ohfook · 11/10/2025 07:28

Just guessing here but I’d guess because they’ll have seen the story of Israel and Palestine unfold over decades, so they’ll understand that it didn’t just start two years ago. They’ve also seen this shit happen in other countries in different news cycles so they’ll recognise what is happening. Many of them might even be old enough to remember when the world hoped this would never happen again and they’ll have seen enough terrorist acts to recognise what is and isn’t terrorism when they see it.

But that’s not what they’re protesting. They’re protesting in support of a pro-Hamas terrorist organisation. And Hamas surely take some responsibility for the deaths of innocent Gazans since 7 Oct.

As PP have said, they could easily march in support of Palestinians affected by war but that’s not what they are doing- or maybe they mistakenly think they are, hence the phrase ‘useful idiots’.

ohfook · 11/10/2025 07:32

Oh and they’ll all remember that at one point Nelson Mandela was apparently a terrorist and understand that that popular opinion changes so it’s best to go with your own internal morality.

It’s always Mandela that’s cited. Always.

Never the Baader-Meinhof Group, or the Black September Organisation, or the Red Brigades or FARC narco terrorists. 🙄

My experience is that for most claiming to be Jewish, its usually one grandparent or similar and people who dont menaingfully participate in Jewish cultural or religious life but find it convenient in this context to be the token jew. Thats not to say there aren't a plethora of opinions within the jewish community (as within israel too) regarding gaza and the decisions of the israeli government but those who would support an extremist movement like Palestinian action would be the minority of the minority. The vast majority of British Jews are zionist (in the original meaning of the word, not the slur its been twisted into)

Absolutely. Good on them!

Errr, @ThreeDeafMice ‘s maths is way off.

The costs of arrest, court time, processing etc will be more than a £1k fine per person, and it adds up to £1.5 million, not £15m

Oh so there’s a hierarchy of Jewishness? And according to you some people just aren’t Jewish enough?? Who knew?
