To wonder why so many pensioners are supporting Palestine Action, even willing to risk prison for it ?

Palestine Action showed their true colours a long time ago. I strongly oppose a lot of Netanyahu's actions- I don't object to a protest for the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. That wasn't Palestine Action's agenda, though.

I would've thought people 60+ would have, on average, accumulated more wisdom. Young people have often been swept up into radical movements with dangerous agendas (look at 60s protestors who thought Castro & co.were nice etc). It's no excuse..but is a BIT easier to see why young people (student age) might fall for this kind of stuff. Also people now seem to have less media literacy, esp SM.

But why are 60+ year olds getting caught up in it?? Willing to go to prison? What is going on? This hasn't happened before with stuff like BLM or Extinction Rebellion, so what us going on now?

The ceasefire doesn't negate the genocide obviously

just because something has stopped does not mean it’s no longer a reality and no longer relevant

But it negates the need to protest.

noblegiraffe · 11/10/2025 18:20

Unless you were never marching for peace between Israel and Palestine in the first place.

I think it’s important to keep it up. It’s early days

Why ?

If you are unaware of the situation re PA designation then I advice you check out the news rather than mumsnet

If you are unaware of the concerns re the ceasefire then I also suggest you look up analysis by professionals in the field rather than mumsnet

If you’re really that interested you’d read around the subject.

Im not biting 😆

So why not wait for the court ruling?

I am still amazed that people think that parading through London with silly banners/ placards stopping people doing their shopping etc will affect a conflict 2,000+ miles away.

The point of this thread wasn’t even about Palestine. It was about why older people care. And I say, regardless of your opinions, thank goodness someone does. This is a generation of protesters. I certainly spent my teens and twenties Protesting in the 80s and 90s and I still really care now. Why wouldn’t it? I’m not dead yet.

Now there is a ceasefire and a possiblity of progression will Palestine supporters be volunteering t to go and rebuild the territory? Skilled and educated people will.be needed.

Or will professional.protestors and agitations more to the next virtue signalling cause?

Are you disagreeing that there is any antisemitism on these marches or support for Hamas?

Not at all. I didnt even mention the marches. Merely said disagreeing with the actions of the state of Israel is not anti semitism.
I am not denying that anti semitism absolutely exists.

I saw some film footage of the marches and there were some strange banners/placards.
One was a "ban the bomb" symbol.
Another said "One state, Palestine !" - that protestor doesn't seem to want a two-state solution.
"Globalise the intafada"- don't like the sound of that.
Other placards stated: "Starmer has blood on his hands, free Palestine". - which seems a bit odd when Starmer has said he recognised the state of Palestine.

I'm beginning to think these protesters are just a load of bored oiks who just like protesting.

TeenagersAngst · 11/10/2025 07:31

But that’s not what they’re protesting. They’re protesting in support of a pro-Hamas terrorist organisation. And Hamas surely take some responsibility for the deaths of innocent Gazans since 7 Oct.

As PP have said, they could easily march in support of Palestinians affected by war but that’s not what they are doing- or maybe they mistakenly think they are, hence the phrase ‘useful idiots’.

Thank you! Shocking to see people missing tye glaringly obvious point.

after so many pages of this enough people have corrected the wrong thinking of others.

What do you think I was doing? I’m a working class person, from a council estate, state educated who has worked since I was 16. I’ve been a paying tax now for 42 years. And employing people who also pay tax. I’ve brought up two working adults who also pay tax. I’m not sure what your point is! I still feel passionate about causes. I still care. I still have time to care.

Portraying me as some feckless work shy wastrel says more about you then it does about me.

I applaud people who still have the energy to be active for causes they care about.

But the poster said 'it's not so much the support for Palestine but the antisemitism and disruption' that was the problem.

Which it is. When people say 'antisemitism on the marches', they mean antisemitism on the marches. But someone will always say 'criticism of Israel isn't antisemitism'. Why did you think the poster thought it was, and weren't in fact referring to actual antisemitism?

I'd rather they were protesting about something actually worth it.

Because whether Palestine Action are correctly designated a terrorist group or not (and that's for the courts to decide), they're a shitty mix of Hamas supporters, thugs and idiots who plan to continue attacks our national security. That's not really something I can get behind.

This posters love to put people down. The last one suggested people who demonstrated hadn’t got a clue what they are doing

They've got nothing else left but to insult people

Ignore.

58 yr old here too 😁

ps
Free speech is worth demonstrating for
Probably the most worthy of causes

@Plantatreetoday "The last one suggested people who demonstrated hadn’t got a clue what they are doing"

So why was someone carrying a "ban the bomb" placard? I can only just remember those so the protester is obviously really old and senile !

Marching isn't necessarily 'stopping people doing their shopping'. If it were a March to raise awareness of trustworthy charities to help Gazan civilians, I'd be supportive.

Instead, it's a March where many people seem to support a group that supports Hamas.

I think you have missed an obvious point.

IRA, Hamas. Why do either of these groups exsist? I think both are fucking vile. I’m not so stupid as to understand why they exsist. You are of the position you have never needed a terrorist group to save you or fight your cause.

I don’t protest but I’m with the Palestines. I believe the majority of Jewish people have a very strong opinion about the whole thing which I disagree with.

I’d love to know when and why you believe this conflict started?
