Sadiq Khan. Can anyone tell me something positive about what he has done?

So the past few days I've unfortunately gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of clips about the Mayor of London.

From what I have seen the man is an utter buffoon who has done nothing to improve London, in fact quite the opposite.

Strikes increasing. Homelessness increasing. Crime - off the charts. Congestion zone charges etc.

And don't get me started on the deputy who seems to be from another planet!

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

So did Jimmy Savile.

Wtf?? 😳🤬

Poppingby · 08/10/2025 22:29

This thread is a tonic. Even the Londoners who are not keen on Sadiq are saying 'not my cup of tea' rather than baying for his blood. Refreshing these days.

(ULEZ expansion has extended the life expectancy of children born in London by 6 months)

TwistyTurnip · 08/10/2025 22:30

He owns a cute pet dog. I saw a photo of him in the news taking it for a walk once. Lab by the looks of it.

ZaZathecat · 08/10/2025 22:31

He's made London a cleaner (less polluted) city.

MusicalCarbuncle · 08/10/2025 22:32

From a totally politically agnostic standpoint I think he has been fantastic for London and Londoners. He’s used his limited powers wisely to make a real difference where it matters: hunger, housing, air quality.

Plus my very dear friend knew him personally and through his political activism, before friend died prematurely. I’d 100% trust my friend’s judgement of people and political credentials and he thought Sadiq was the bees knees. Good enough for me.

It horrifies me that so many people are so easily swayed by some reform/ Tory/ Russian- funded social media manipulation. Check your sources. Check for bias. Check for actual facts and the veracity of statistics. Check that the things people are being criticised for, are actually things within their control. And most of all, check for thinly-veiled racism and Islamophobia dressed up as legitimate critique of one individual’s actions.

You didn't know Savile was knighted?

  1. Implementation of the Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) and Low Emission Bus Zones, leading to a significant reduction in air pollution.

  2. Introduction of the "Hopper" fare, allowing unlimited bus and tram journeys within an hour for a single fare.

  3. Establishment of the Violence Reduction Unit and investment in youth services to tackle the root causes of violent crime.

  4. Commitment to building more affordable homes, with a target of 50% of new homes being genuinely affordable.

  5. Launch of the London Living Rent, helping Londoners on average incomes afford to rent a home.

  6. Promotion of active travel, including the expansion of London's cycle network with the introduction of cycle superhighways and the creation of "Mini-Holland" cycling schemes.

  7. Support for businesses during the COVID-19 pandemic, including the "Pay It Forward" scheme and the London Business Hub.

  8. Investment in green spaces and the environment, with a commitment to make London a National Park City and an ambition to reach net-zero carbon emissions by 2030.

  9. Encouragement of cultural initiatives, such as the "London Borough of Culture" award, which aims to highlight the importance of culture in local communities.

  10. Establishment of the Mayor's Young Londoners Fund to support education, sports, and cultural activities for young people.

London has become an absolute hellhole under his watch.

No it hasn't. I love it here. 😊

LakieLady · 08/10/2025 22:53

mirrorsandlights · 08/10/2025 19:41

This. I can tell the difference in the air I breathe. I no longer have such frequent asthma attacks and chest infections, I don’t smell the levels of pollution when walking along busy roads, I no longer have to clean my windows every week. This is the single most important thing for everyone who lives in London.

MIL lives on the very southern edge of London, and even there the improvement in air quality is marked.

MusicalCarbuncle · 08/10/2025 23:01

Also all these people saying London is a hellhole… it just is not: it’s a brilliant, diverse, largely safe city which is easy and cheap to navigate on public transport and has lots of fun free or low cost stuff.

It’s hardly Guadalajara or Joburg. My kids can go out alone to cultural events or just shopping or whatever and I know there will be transport and law enforcement officers if things do go wrong, which can happen anywhere.

Living costs are a different matter but I don’t think you can pin that on the Mayor given he controls neither property purchase prices or (most ) tax and spend.

EsotericMnemonic · 08/10/2025 23:09

An actual Londoner agreeing he’s been great for the city, improving air quality and tackling child poverty and hunger amongst many other things His policies will make a real, tangible difference to children growing up here.

PinkArt · 08/10/2025 23:16

OnlyFrench · 08/10/2025 21:31

@PinkArtI don’t live in the UK but it’s astonishing how well known he is and how badly he’s misrepresented abroad. I remember a Belgian friend telling me it was reported he’d changed the advertising rules because he was Muslim and thought women’s bodies shouldn’t be on display. A French neighbour insists he’s solely responsible for all anti sémitismes in London.

Really interesting to hear so many positive stories.

A few years back I'd tweeted something mildly supportive of him. Some American tweeters told me that because he's a Muslim he must be a terrorist. When I tried to point out how ludicrous that sounds they said they hoped I was raped by a Muslim. His existence seems to really trigger a certain sort of person.

dottyplants · 08/10/2025 23:19

Certain people, generally those who don't even live in London (you may or may not be included in this, OP), don't like him. Can't think what it is about him specifically that they're not qwhite on board with.

MusicalCarbuncle · 08/10/2025 23:29

@dottyplants elegant and on point.

I live 250 miles away. I like him very much. Don’t understand all the hate.

MusicalCarbuncle · 08/10/2025 23:38

I love this thread. The consensus seems to be a load of Londoners going, “sorry? We’re all pretty good thanks, and by the way, we actually quite like our brown Muslim mayor and what he’s done.” Very rare on threads about political types these days.

If you're not from London, I can't quite see what it has to do with you. Londoners are clearly happy with him, given the number of times he's been reelected. You've gone digging for dirt about a man who doesn't represent you, and for whom you cannot vote? Why? And why post a load of personal insults about him whilst simultaneously asking if he has any good points? You've clearly made your mind up about this person whose performance in office is none of your business.

LandofTute · 08/10/2025 23:51

The buses have hugely improved where I am. He's reduced pollution too with electric buses and encouraging less polluting cars. There's a certain type that froths about him very vocally. Non frothers quietly go off and vote for him and he wins.
Trump is one of the frothers who despises him. Personally I prefer Kahn to Trump.

Panpots · 08/10/2025 23:53

bookworm14 · 08/10/2025 19:32

You might want to ask yourself, OP, why there are so many videos about how awful he is from people who don’t even live in London. What is it about him specifically that makes them so angry?

Yep. Bring back critical thinking.

Well said. Honestly it’s so tedious and they’re so transparent.

I’ve watched many London assembly meetings online over the years and he’s an arsehole.

Gymrabbit · 08/10/2025 23:59

80smonster · 08/10/2025 21:14

ULEZ has been a very positive thing for London, if you aren’t from London - why do you care? What an odd (and misinformed) post.

I could not disagree more.
it’s not positive that my uncle couldn’t afford to regularly visit his dying brother or that my friend has to pay £12.50 every day to go to her 90 year old grandparents house to help them out because her diesel car which she was assured would be fine when she bought it is subject to the tax.
Like the congestion charge it’s a tax that disproportionately affects the poor - in fact it’s worse than the congestion charge because poorer people are more likely to have older cars.

Wakeuplittlebunnies · 09/10/2025 00:00

Free school meals for all primary school children. Saved me a lot of money

Over riding the council who tried to block the development of new buildings.

Kept the price of buses low and introduced the unlimited buses within 1 hour. I only really respected this when I travelled outside of London and experienced the expensive slow arse buses!
