Sadiq Khan. Can anyone tell me something positive about what he has done?

So the past few days I've unfortunately gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of clips about the Mayor of London.

From what I have seen the man is an utter buffoon who has done nothing to improve London, in fact quite the opposite.

Strikes increasing. Homelessness increasing. Crime - off the charts. Congestion zone charges etc.

And don't get me started on the deputy who seems to be from another planet!

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

Ulez is amazing - the expansion has made all the difference.

I am so impressed with Khan for toughing out a policy that even the leader of his party refused to back him on (Starmer, you coward). Khan stood up for London's children in the face of some epic whining.

I used to have spare inhalers in my bag for 4 or 5 of the children I teach. Last year - none. This year - one. The air is just noticeably cleaner.

Free school meals, better cycle lanes, the Superloop, bus hopper fares and fares kept low.

But clean air - that is very hard to beat.

If you consider Mayor Khan a buffoon, WTF did you think of Alexander Pfeffel Boris Johnson, the buffoon’s buffoon?

80smonster · 08/10/2025 21:14

ULEZ has been a very positive thing for London, if you aren’t from London - why do you care? What an odd (and misinformed) post.

MycroftSholmes · 08/10/2025 21:15

Ulez has been a game changer for health

Superloop is great

he understands normal Londoners and how to help us

pedestrianiding Oxford street next

free school meals

parks and green space improvements

he’s great!

soundsys · 08/10/2025 21:24

Already mentioned by others but apprecigreatly by me also:

Not paying again when you change buses (blew my mind that you had to before, u like anywhere else I've ever lived

Free school meals for primary school children

ULEZ/improved air quality. As the parent of an asthmatic child this is the biggest one.

I'm sure there ar others. I have a generally good impression of him, and anyone I know who has actually met him (I know a fair few people who have through work) haven't had a bad word to say about him. Whether you agree with his policies or not, he seems like someone who is generally in it for the right reasons imo

OnlyFrench · 08/10/2025 21:31

@PinkArtI don’t live in the UK but it’s astonishing how well known he is and how badly he’s misrepresented abroad. I remember a Belgian friend telling me it was reported he’d changed the advertising rules because he was Muslim and thought women’s bodies shouldn’t be on display. A French neighbour insists he’s solely responsible for all anti sémitismes in London.

Really interesting to hear so many positive stories.

timestressed · 08/10/2025 20:56

Do you actually know what are his powers and responsibilities? And if you do which of his duties in your oppinion he really has done badly.

Of course I do. I live here. He has failed to tackle crime. And completely failed to grab hold of the recent tube strike which caused absolute misery.

jan2310 · 08/10/2025 21:37

Gymrabbit · 08/10/2025 20:54

How about in Greater London?

But of course why should he give a shit about us. We don’t vote for him.

The congestion charge is a tax on the poor. If you’re rich enough it’s fine to pollute apparently but if not fuck you.
and if you live in Greater London there’s no tubes and public transport is not great.

I live in Greater London. We don’t have the tube but transport links are good. I don’t think Khan is doing a good job but the lack of tube isn’t a reason

pointythings · 08/10/2025 21:39

Rabbitholes are risky places. The light is bad and it tricks you. You should never go down one without one of those X Files style torches and your critical thinking hat on.

I don't think you took those precautions, OP. So ask yourself - why do you want to believe all the bad stuff? The drop in air pollution alone is a huge positive achievement that is saving people's lives - disproportionate numbers of those lives are those of children.

Timeforabitofpeace · 08/10/2025 21:58

Dear me , is this the Trump bandwagon?

London has become an absolute hellhole under his watch.

Has it? 😂 I've been travelling into central London to work for nearly 20 years - aside from scooters and phone theft, it's really much the same as it ever was.

I always wonder why trolls go on about how London has fallen, when there are literally millions of people living their lives there every day.

It just shows how widespread the right-wing propaganda machine really is, doesn't it.

He is ok charge of the police budget yet had closed several police stations.

90 closed under Boris Johnson. Just a few more than several.

SalmonOnFinnCrisp · 08/10/2025 22:08

Yes...Instigated by a man who insists on a cavalcade of range rovers to chauffeur him everywhere (this isnt hyperbole - it's literal)

The hypocrisy is just painful.

Bloodyscarymary · 08/10/2025 22:11

ULEZ was bloody brilliant and unpopular but changed London for the better - it’s a liveable, healthy city now. I really admire a politician who can hold firm and implement policies for the greater good despite naysayers and vested interests.

euff · 08/10/2025 22:12

jan2310 · 08/10/2025 20:48

I’m a Londoner. I think he’s been a terrible mayor but the alternatives weren’t any better. I don’t know anyone who thinks he’s doing a good job.

Done a far better job than previous mayors.

Yes I also laugh that he is apparently implementing “Shariah law” in London - Shariah law states that thieves get their hand chopped off. I think the phone theft issue plaguing London wouldn’t be so rife if we were actually living under Shariah law.

We shouldn’t laugh though because the absolutely BONKERS right wing fake news machine is actually a tragedy for democracy.

Violent crime is falling.

Lambington · 08/10/2025 22:18

The Congestion Charging zones are nothing to do with Sidiq Khan. They were introduced by Ken Livingstone. And maintained by Boris Johnson.

skippy67 · 08/10/2025 22:21

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

So why do you care?

zoemum2006 · 08/10/2025 22:21

Me and my husband having a running joke if anything annoys us we shake our fists and mutter "Khan!!!!"

Basically it's homage to a group of people who want to blame him for things that aren't his fault because he's a really popular liberal leader and they hate that!

timestressed · 08/10/2025 22:21

jan2310 · 08/10/2025 21:35

Which crime in particular, if you can give an example, has not been tackled?

Blahdiblahblahr · 08/10/2025 22:22

What a weird thread. OP not from London and asks for things he’s done. Bunch of Londoners pile in to say he’s a good mayor and point out the anti-Khan online video factory are mostly funded by white supremacists.

And OP keeps arguing he’s terrible!

OP - you seem very gullible. Believe the made up videos from the EDL rather than what actual people are telling you.

No one’s even covered the best bit which is that he pissed off donald trump

Mumdiva99 · 08/10/2025 22:24

Bambamhoohoo · 08/10/2025 19:36

I mean, I know the hate around him is racism but I find the narrative baffling.

what did Ken Livingston do? What Boris Johnson do? What do people actually expect mayors to do??

londoners like him a lot- but we do tend to be less racist than the rest of the country

Don't denegrate Boris. He did a whole zip line as Mayor .....or wait a minute....no he didn't he got stuck halfway down and someone else had to sort his mess out.

Blahdiblahblahr · 08/10/2025 22:25

SnackQueen · 08/10/2025 20:46

London has become an absolute hellhole under his watch.

Don’t come here then, easy 😁

And if you live here already, move out and free up the housing for the massive queue of people who want to live here.
