Sadiq Khan. Can anyone tell me something positive about what he has done?

So the past few days I've unfortunately gone down a bit of a rabbit hole of clips about the Mayor of London.

From what I have seen the man is an utter buffoon who has done nothing to improve London, in fact quite the opposite.

Strikes increasing. Homelessness increasing. Crime - off the charts. Congestion zone charges etc.

And don't get me started on the deputy who seems to be from another planet!

I am not from London, so just wondering if anyone at all has anything positive at all to say about this catastrophe of man!

It does AFAIK. I have a Disabled Person's Railcard linked to my Oyster card and you just need to take it to a staff member in a tube station so they can put it on for you. It makes a massive difference to me Smile.

Yes, that’s right. You need to use it with an Oyster card, not a contactless card. But it gets you a third off off-peak fares on the Tube or Overground or local trains. No discount on buses, though.

I live fairly close to London and have friends there they can't stand him.

Unfortunately I can't access the capital as much as we would like because the train to get in is 50 quid plus that's before anything else and we used to drive in and now that's too expensive.

Ginmonkeyagain · 11/10/2025 15:22

Train fares outside London and the price of petrol are not Sadiq Khan's fault.

You must live pretty far out of London. I'm going to Oxford tomorrow by train and I got an off peak return for £39.

Yesshadow · 11/10/2025 15:23

A £50 ticket is not ‘fairly’ close to London. Plus the price of that ticket and petrol have as much to do with Sadiq Khan as my weekly shop.

I don't think he has done much for me other than a large charge on my council tax bill which seems to increase by much more than inflation every year.

SinnerBoy · 11/10/2025 15:59

The council tax rises are, unfortunately, the result of Tory austerity. Central Government cut their funding by up to 60% bit still expect them to maintain their minimum statutory services.

You could always try to refuse to pay the Mayor's precept on the basis that you won't ever use the police, fire service or any TFL public transport....

Or you could approach your local elected Assembly member (who will have voted on the Mayor's budget, within which the precept sits) to raise your concerns.

Reform led councils have increased the council tax.

I have an old person's bus pass, which I think gives me free bus travel in London.

It's close to 70 miles to central London from where I live, and the off-peak is £36.50. The senior railcard gets me a third off that, which makes it a bargain imo.

Same. My return train fare into London is about £23 with a rail card for the same distance. We got a huge bargain with our senior railcards when we went to Gatwick recently - £12.50 each via London.

Yes, it does. And that brings us to another good thing about London, not instigated by Khan, but nor removed - the 60+ card, which does give free travel on all buses in London, as well as free off peak Tube travel.

Your council tax will still be less than mine. The council tax here is the 4th highest in the country, and none of the top three are in London.

You do realise that the London boroughs have in general some of the cheapest council taxes in the country?

They really do. My Band E council tax here is almost even with my mothers Band C council tax 200 miles north.

DevaneyRob43 · 11/10/2025 19:36

Ulez, congestion charging, bus fares. He's a middle of the road Mayor, tons better than Boris. But wait, his religion is...can you guess why the Daily Mail demonise him?
