My thoughts are with the Jewish community on the second anniversary of this barbaric attack.

I was happy to leave it, then she stepped up the insults.

I’m still happy to leave it.

Oh do go away. You are being completely insensitive here.

Bye!

I think you should be saying that to the person who derailed by saying ‘An important tenet of fundamentalist Islam is complete intolerance of homosexuality’ and therefore gay people shouldn’t support Palestinians.

I did not say anyone should not be supporting the plight of innocent Palestinians. The point I was making was that the Islamist group Hamas does not have an enviable track record in terms of their treatment of homosexuals and women.

I was pointing out the irony of the unmitigated support given to them as 'freedom fighters' by many people who consider themselves progressive, including many gay people. As a traditionally left wing/ liberal person I find that hard to understand, especially as Hamas have zero tolerance for the right to protest as shown by the way any dissent from their own people is quickly stamped on.

But I actually think you're being deliberately obtuse - your conflation of the historical patriarchal and fundamentalist nature of all the Abrahamic faiths with the present comparatively socially liberal, semi-secular democracy of Israel is disingenuous.

Oh pack it in nomas
No one is arguing that innocent civilians deserve to be starved or bombed because they live under a religious fundamentalist, authoritarian regime or that Netanyahu's despicable government is beyond critique for its expansionist policies or war crimes but that's precisely my point. It's the blind valorization of Hamas without any critical examination of their past record or future manifesto that undermines the legitimacy of much of the support given to the Palestinian cause by protestors in Western, liberal democracies. By all means separate the plight of the Palestinian people from Hamas's actions, but it makes absolutely no sense for so called progressives to shore up a regressive, authoritarian regime like Hamas whatever they believe about the legitimacy of Israel.

I still think on a regular basis about the family whose 18 year old daughter Maayan had been murdered in cold blood while the terrorists took the rest of the family, the parents and the two younger siblings, into the living room and filmed their obvious anguish and posted it on social media before kidnapping the father and taking him to Gaza. The look on the father's face has stuck with me for two years now, and the little boy's tears too, asking if his sister was dead. Pleading with the terrorists to let them check on their dead sister and daughter, to sit with her, and being told no.

The granddaughter who was scrolling on Facebook and was suddenly faced with a livestream of her elderly grandmother's execution.

The Bibas family.

Shani Louk.

The Facebook posts from distraught Israelis asking if anyone had seen their missing relatives or friends, and the comment sections absolutely full of laughing emojis and Palestinian flags.

😢

Just horrific. All those poor people.

But nobody remembers or talks about them anymore. People even get annoyed if you dare to mention them on the anniversary of those barbaric attacks.

And apologies to any Jewish readers of this thread - I'm sorry about my part in any derailment. Enough from me.

My thoughts are with all those affected by the events of October 7th and their families. Wishing everyone suffering peace 💛

It is horror beyond words.

The details if what happened to the Bibas family are all utterly horrific: the ghastly celebration when the children's bodies were returned to Israel, and the returning of the wrong woman's body. Keeping the father hostage and starving hi. The family has suffered so much. Those poor toddler boys and their mother.

And Hamas claimed they were killed during an Israeli air strike.

Sending love and support tonight.
May the hostages all be returned soon.
It’s unimaginable what they and their loved ones have experienced.
It’s so important to say their names and keep their memories alive.

If only all those ‘kind’ and ‘on the right side’ pro Palestine marchers could muster an ounce of empathy for the victims of that horrific attack.

I don't think a remembrance thread is the right place for this image personally Sad

My point was that at the same time as normal people with any kind of moral compass are remembering the victims, some of whom are still held hostage and tortured two years later, of a horrendous terrorist attack, this is how others choose to seemingly celebrate the exact same terrorist attack.

The world needs to do a whole lot better than this.

I do agree but it's a remembrance thread not a debate. Plenty of other threads for that.

I hope the Jewish community in this country (and everywhere else) was not exposed to any hatred yesterday.

Although I can imagine it would be difficult to avoid.
