To finally agree with a junior doctors strike

Horsehow · 06/10/2025 18:20

Junior doctors have decided to strike as they are being overlooked for jobs / training posts which are instead given to international applicants. I’ve always abhorred their money grabbing strikes in the past, but support this one 100%. UK doctors should be recruited where possible, and international graduates only turned to where we cannot find a suitable recruit in the UK.

It’s not in the least disgusting that senior doctors from other countries are prepared to take a demotion in order to pursue a better life for themselves and their families. That’s a shameful statement.

Why do you assume it’s a demotion? The world runs on money, it might be a demotion in their medical status but a financial promotion.

Wronginformation · 06/10/2025 19:53

I usually avoid these threads. But I'm a bit confused about the statistics.
Yes , more internationals apply for UK Jobs. A medical school friend , Pakistani doctor, working in UK for decades, had 4 non training jobs advertised. 1000 applications, majority form Pakistan and India, who thanks to Trumps politics apply for UK instead of USA.. Jobs went all to UK graduates

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:54

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice for every other profession rules apply. Not doctors. That's just a free for all

Edited

It’s certainly a demotion in career terms and I used the term in that sense.

It is appalling- unless you are working alongside medics you have absolutely no idea of the pressure they are under all of thw time & the sacrifices they make to complete their (extremely long, difficult and poorly paid) training. And all of that for nothing at the end for some. I am not against skilled immigration whatsoever when there is a need for it, but when very good doctors - who are paid really poorly for the job they do- are left unemployed it does make you wonder if medicine will be as prestigious a career going forward. I feel the same about nursing students - all that hard work and training and no job at the end of it. I also work with some phenomenal international doctors and nurses so its not at all a slight towards the individuals themselves, but the system.

You get very senior overseas doctors applying for entry-level uk posts “to get their foot in the door”. And obviously a consultant with 20 years’ experience will outcompete a brand new junior doctor in interview - how could they not?

I wonder what the correlation is between the people who don't support junior doctor strikes and the people who don't like immigration.

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:56

@Wronginformation when interviews apply then UKGs get some advantage. But some roles don't interview, it's all down to an exam or points system (eg GP, Psyc).
There is a whole industry of people making huge sums of money helping IMGs get jobs here. While we have unemployed doctors.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 06/10/2025 19:56

Ok, that says equal opportunity, not priority?!

And it doesn’t say the ISC of £500/yr of sponsoring an immigrant skilled worker does not apply.

Sorry what? No rules apply to hiring doctors? Surely there are some rules like minimum qualification? No criminal record?

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:57

The people worst off ? Those who came from abroad as international students to study here, at great cost. Who now can't get jobs here as UKGs and so lose their visa.

You may strongly dislike contrary opinions but it would be impossible for you to produce any post of mine which could remotely be characterised as ‘bile’. That’s such a weak assertion, purely to try to discredit other posters. If you can find ‘bile’ - repost it. It isn’t there; all of my posts are measured (as were the posts of the various consultants/ nurses etc.).

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:58

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice the 'foreign' employee rules ?

Wronginformation · 06/10/2025 19:58

I know, hospital medic myself and dh is a GP.

Janesmom · 06/10/2025 19:59

In every other professional career, UK grads compete with those from other jurisdictions for however many jobs are available. Take law, where the best city firms are staffed by the top grads from across the world. Why should medicine be any different?

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:59

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice seriously ? You need to read more from doctors if don't believe it's true. There is NO priority for UKGs. None. Nil.

SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice · 06/10/2025 19:59

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 19:51

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice then that company need to lose their licence !

Along with all the other solicitor firms and the Home Office bureaucrats claiming the charge is still due to them too? What are the chances that everyone is mistaken except you? Have you found a page saying the ISC has been eliminated like you say?

mumsneedwine · 06/10/2025 20:00

@Janesmom because the tax payer funds their training. And they only have one employer in the UK, so not like law at all.

@SugarandSpiceandAllThingsNaice the 'foreign' employee rules ?

Really? So are you saying that foreign doctors don’t need visas like other foreign workers that immigrate here? How odd, I am sure they do.

Wronginformation · 06/10/2025 20:00

This makes my blood boil, so will leave quickly

Oh dear. Read more. Look at the BMA conference and motions passed this autumn. It's so easy to find out,
I know I'm right.

Yes seriously. Where is the data/evidence showing that foreign doctors get priority over or are systematically preferred over UK doctors?
