To be absolutely fuming about the digital ID thing?

summerlovingvibes · 06/10/2025 13:52

I work as a nurse in England.

I just feel absolutely fuming about the digital ID proposals and don't know how to channel my anger??

I very strongly object to this. It makes my blood boil when I think about it and I feel anxious knowing that something like this may be imposed on us all.

It is not going to stop illegal immigration. That line is absolute BS. They're doing it for their own selfish reasons.

What do we do? I don't want to not work, but I am going to refuse to have one. So my employer may sack me?!

It's just ridiculous!

Obviously I've signed the petition, emailed my MP, will join any protests etc.

But practically speaking - will my employer actually sack me for not having one?

But what’s your proof? NI number and a separate photo ID? There’s no way to easily check that the NI number hasn’t been shared or stolen from someone else because it has no photo attached to it.

Now the Benefits Agency can check in their systems that your NI number and your drivers licence photo match the person sitting in front of them. The average employer doesn’t have that option.

Because the NI number has my address and name with it and that matches my passport name? If I supplied the wrong NI it wouldn’t have my name.

People who work outside the current employment rules still will. The employer just doesn’t check anything, they know what the requirements are now but ignore them. How would you stop that?

BeardofHagrid · 06/10/2025 18:21

Refuse, refuse, refuse. They’ve already said they won’t be forcing anyone to have it.

It’ll be hard to do much though if you need it to do basic things.

Why do you think this would happen?
What makes you think that it won't !?

Well that doesn't answer my question! What would be the reasoning behind it and which vaccines?

Does the employer have an easy way to see the name and address attached to an NI number?

Got it. I thought you meant specifically for house buying.

?
EasternStandard said 'house selling'. It will be house buying next, though, sure as eggs are eggs..

It's on the P45, if the employee has one.

The obvious one is if a child doesn't have the right vaccines then they are barred from nursery or school.

justhomeshortly · 06/10/2025 18:39

I don’t want it either OP and I imagine that in time, they’ll bolt on everything else, passport, entitlement to benefits, driving licence etc.

Realistically, I can’t see it happening for a very long time. The government is so incredibly inefficient and plus, apparently we’re broke with a billion, zillion black hole so not likely in the lifetime of this government.

If it did happen, it’d depend on whether it was mandated by law, whether employers would be required to retrospectively check all current employees etc. Only then I’d decide how to tackle it.

I’m not giving it much attention at the moment as I suspect it’s just another poor judgement decision from the PM who is presumably under the whip of Mr-give-me-Gaza-Blair.

Googling they can check

  • Verification of the NI number:
  • They can verify that the NI number you provide matches your stated name and date of birth through the HMRC's NVR service.

But if I have proved I can work in the U.K. via my passport already why would I need another NI number? I’m legit as is anyone else in that position.

So given an employer might circumvent all these checks how does another form of ID change anything?

GentleSheep · 06/10/2025 18:39

Russia have also brought in digital ID - rather amusingly called 'Max' - new phones come with it ready-installed!

ChrisMartinsKisskam · 06/10/2025 18:40

I mean from yesterday if you go to Nando’s you can only get one full fat Diet Coke on the refillable drinks 😂 new law in place

you can have as many sugar free refills as you want but only one full fat Diet Coke

I mean if they are targeting Nando’s for refillable full fat coke imagine what they are going to do with digital ID

sorry you have bought your quota of wine this week

sorry you have reached your full fat Coke limit 😂

Sorry you can’t drive this week you have reached your carbon print limit

endless really fucking nanny state

But the government could do that tomorrow if it wanted. No need for digital ID.

Darner · 06/10/2025 18:43

Gosh, I couldn’t give a hoot about being required to have a digital ID. To me, I can see only benefits - simple, efficient, inclusive. Bring it on.

Theoldwrinkley · 06/10/2025 18:47

I'm old. I don't do 'digital' anything as I don't understand it. Nothing to hide per se, but really distrust digital anything. I'll believe it when I see it, and hope in the meantime it will die a death like so many promises of this current shower in power. I think I'm about to get cancelled, or if not hope I'll be pushing up daisies by the time its brought in (with date and 'security' operated by Mr Blair's son, apparently).

But they could do that already if they wanted to - this new ID doesn’t give the government anymore info about you than it already has. It doesn’t give them anymore power over you than they already have.*

I get the hacking concern on creating a new system.

I get the cost concern - particularly at the moment (and there may be someone in the government that has worked out that enough money will be saved on stopping any current fraud that it will work out)

But the Big Brother fears for anyone who is legal resident with the right to work and live in the UK is nonsense.

*my one caveat re power is if carrying it all times becomes compulsory that it might embolden police against minorities and discriminatory stop and searches.

Sesma · 06/10/2025 18:52

I'm not happy about it being digital but I will probably be able to resist for a while as I'm retired and they will probably end up having to do something for those without smart phones unless they are going to give people a phone to put it on. Digital ones will be pretty much unenforceable, I guess I will just get a card version eventually. It's supposed to be just for work anyway.

theclive · 06/10/2025 18:17

What is your issue?
I don’t see a problem if done properly. I’ve nothing to hide.

Exactly this.
"IF DONE PROPERLY".
And I have no doubt in my mind that the government won't do it properly. Something will go wrong and someone will fuck up and identity documents along with bank accounts, tax information, house information etc etc etc will be stolen.

I don't understand why everyone is stressing so much. The government already have all information on you they want for the digital ID's. It will make no difference, instead it will actually be easier to have everything in one place

Edited

I don’t either. Many other countries have this system. I’m not even slightly bothered by it.

I have no idea.

There are far better things to be spending money on and I don't think it should be a priority at all. But I also don't think it is some Fabian/Communist conspiracy, which some of the more tin foil hat inclined on SM are claiming.

PrincessSophieFrederike · 06/10/2025 18:55

I agree, so does my mother. We worry it will be used for a social credit system like China, or that all banking will become digital, which means the government could withhold bank & money access from people who rebel.

‘Done properly’ what does that mean anyway. Labour might not be in after the next GE anyway, maybe it won’t be kept but unconcerned people might be more concerned with another party.

I think that is a fair point. Digital ID in the hands of a more extreme future government is a worry.
