I dont blame them. I would if I were Jewish.

They have been failed by their country, which is the UK. I wish them well and hope the UK can sort its anti semitism problems so it becomes safe for Jewish people again.

Just watched BBC news on the TV, two separate families going back to Israel. Even with missile strikes and needing the Iron Dome for protection, they both said they would feel safer there. I'm not Jewish but I felt sad they don't feel safe here. I feel everyone should feel safe here.

There are over 1/4 million Jews in Britain. This is a story about 2 families moving/going back to Israel. Is this really a trend?

IMO anti-semetism and anti-Israeli government are not the same thing. I am proud of my Jewish heritage, I find Netanyahu dispicable.

My main point is sadness that they don't feel safe. I understand it but feel more needs to be done about antisemitism

What more? It is illegal, it is prosecuted, it is socially unacceptable. What else do you want?

Would be nice if the party in Government wasn't full of anti-semites

Doesn't appear to be working though. Bigger fines for anti semitism, prison for repeatedly suggesting violence against Jewish people.

Education on the history of the middle east. So many people don't appear to realise that Jewish people have lived in the middle east for thousands of years. Some of the strange and bizarre comments I've heard people proclaim.

My best friend is Jewish along with all her family. They don't feel unsafe at all. They don't hide they are Jewish but they don't engage in political conversations anymore that I or my family do. A part of family is Jewish too and they feel as safe as anyone can feel. Then again, nobody pays much attention to what they read in the media.

It is not socially unacceptable. Anti semitism is very fashionable at the moment. The marches every week show that. The marches are not for peace (or there would be equal protests about Sudan, Myanmar, Nigeria, Afghanistan). They are about something very, very dark. For fucks sake, there was a ‘globalise the intifada’ sign at the march on the day of the Manchester murders. What do you think that sign means? Jews know what it means and we are telling you.

I'm glad they feel safe, thats great. Others don't though. Maybe it depends where living and how close to protesters.

The recorded stats show anti semitic attacks have increased. Then last week a terrorist incident.

The marches are nothing more than a cheap excuse to be antisemitic in public. No wonder Jews feel scared here. I’m disgusted at the actions of the Israeli government but equally disgusted with the actions of the marchers.

Swiftie1878 · 06/10/2025 11:49

News alert: it’s not just a UK thing. It’s everywhere right now.

legrandcolbert · 06/10/2025 11:50

The Jewish population of the UK is less than half of one percent, so around 300,000. That's a minuscule amount, but many of us have been here for centuries, ever since Thomas Cromwell allowed us back into the country (having been expelled in the later 1200s (I think). As for others, some, like my family came to the UK in the late 1800s as a result of pogroms in Eastern Europe.

I might be ethnically Jewish, but I am also British, born in London, hold a UK passport. English is my mother tongue. Unusually for a Jew, I do not speak or read Hebrew although I can speak a little Yiddish. Tell me; where should I go?

More importantly, why should I leave? Why can't more be done to ensure antisemitism is properly stamped out. Zero tolerance, nothing less. Why is hatred of Jews - that's what antisemitism means - so endemic in the UK? One only has to read threads on here. It's insidious, it's so ingrained in the very fabric of the UK that many do not even realise they are antisemitic/supporting antisemitic tropes. There is also little knowledge about the history of the middle east, or even the fact that Judaism predates Islam by many millennia. This is frustrating, more so when I have people tell me that they have no problem with the modern state of Israel, but.... The but is always followed by something either antisemitic or woefully ignorant about Jewish history. Getting back to the UK, from the moment Jews came here, there has been antisemitism. It was at fever pitch in the 1930s and 40s thanks in part to the press such as the Daily Mail whipping up an antisemitic frenzy. It was only during the war when they realised what was happening to Jews in Europe that the Daily Mail changed tracks. But, over time, the antisemitism has crept back in, how could it not? It is never far from the surface. Today, the media are still culpable, ditto the present government.

To return to WWII, when fleeing Eastern Europe, many Jews choose not to settle in the UK because they did not feel safe here, it was too close to Europe. I have long wished my family had gone to the US too.

In real life, I do not engage with discussions about being Jewish or what is happening in Israel and Gaza because it's too distressing. I do not leave the house when there are marches happening as I feel uncomfortable, not that anyone would even know I am Jewish. But, I live in Central London, and seeing throngs of people supporting those who would happily see death to all Jews is too much for me. I make no bones that Hamas = radical Islam who are unashamed in their desire to kill all Jews (much like they are killing Nigerian Christians at present). While some attend pro-Palestinian marches with good liberal intentions, they're useful idiots blithely ignoring that one day, they will be Hamas' next target. They are, and to repeat, happily joining forces with those whom do not have good intentions, those who do truly hated Jews.

I think I'll need a bit more data before I decide what I think

As if they're going to feel safer if they get caught up in missile strikes.

You don't think they're just making some sort of point and they were going back to Israel anyway by some chance, do you?

Why would any British Jewish person move to Palestine, and how would they do that? Surely they would choose to move to Israel, or perhaps to the US if possible. And they are British citizens, so they can move back any time they like.

More needs to be done? You can’t even be anti-Israeli government or anti-Netanyahu without being accused of being an anti-Semite.

More needs to be done to point out the difference.

Araminta1003 · 06/10/2025 12:14

I agree we owe it to the Jews here to protect them. We are not doing enough.

As a Christian I know there are 2.6 billion of us worldwide. There are also 2 billion Muslims and millions in the UK now.

But there are only 15 million Jews worldwide. They are a true minority, especially in this country. They deserve better.

The marches are protesting genocide.

That doesn’t sound intelligent does it? I hope they aren’t taking their children with them.

Two whole families? Gosh it’s an exodus!!

Any ideas where Palestinians who don't feel safe in Gaza should go to?
Asking for a friend....

I agree, I feel awful that any Jewish person would feel unwelcome here. I blame the media and the government to a large extent for conflating Judaism with the criticism of the actions of Israel; this is itself one of the definitions of antisemitism.
