Is this a reasonable amount of salad for one person for their evening meal?

Two celery stalks
One chicken breast
Five baby potatoes
Half a red onion
Cucumber
Four small beetroot balls
One medium avocado
Watercress, rocket and spinach leaves
Chopped feta

With a dressing of anchovies, lemon juice, olive oil, mustard and honey.

YANBU - That’s definitely enough. On the large side, even.
YABU - That’s not enough.

I’d be more concerned about my breath with that combo than anything else!

Portion wise - who the hell knows if we don’t know how active you are? At my most active, I could eat a full fried breakfast PLUS a burger and chips on the side for breakfast and still be a size 8!! At my least active (working an office job sat on my arse all day) all I’d need is a small salad for lunch and I’d skip breakfast altogether.

Exercise and lifestyle has a huge impact on the amount of calories we need each day.

I had a roast dinner today. Chicken breast dtuffed woth feta, potatoes spinach and beetroot. With a mustard dressing. Is that also a salad?

Can confirm that a roast dinner is not a salad. Odd that you needed to ask.

I dunno, it's enough food in that I probably wouldn't finish it but I wouldn't say it's satiating.

Rainbowcat77 · 02/10/2025 22:16

But, but why do you need Mumsnet to approve your salad though…is this a whole new diet style?
Unless I get a Mumsnet majority vote I can’t eat it?

BeLilacSloth · 02/10/2025 22:17

With all the dressings, feta and avacado it’s probably as many calories as a pizza (and I know what I would choose)

Smileybutwily · 02/10/2025 22:20

It sounds loads imo.
My guess is that DP / DH complained it wasn't a 'proper' meal....?

The whole avocado would be too much for me, having once made that mistake before 🤣
The rest sounds ok.

What happened??

Why make stuff up? Strange behaviour.

Corrrr! You must be the size of a house!

Sounds delicious. 😋

Owly11 · 02/10/2025 22:28

I think it’s a lot - I would have either chicken or avocado or feta, not all three. I know it’s not your question but I also don’t think all the ingredients go nicely together. It seems like the kind of meal someone might have if they were very very hungry and trying to eat ‘healthily’. A bit functional and too much food.

Elephantangel1991 · 02/10/2025 22:34

Way too many variables to answer the question accurately. How much they'd eaten the rest of the day, how much energy they'd used during the day, height and build of person etc.

Barney16 · 02/10/2025 22:37

Can't get past the avocado

Bepo77 · 02/10/2025 22:37

One celery stick too many

glittereyelash · 02/10/2025 22:38

BlueEyedBogWitch · 02/10/2025 22:13

20?

So, that’s:

lettuce
peppers
cucumber
tomatoes
avocado
grated carrot
onion
beetroot
shredded cabbage…?

I’m clutching at straws to make 9!

I dont like lots of any one ingredient in a salad I find it too repetitive. I had a salad for lunch yesterday that had rocket, spinach, watercress, sweet peppers, grated carrot, edamame beans, mangetout, roast cauiliflour, kohlrabi, shallots, tomatoes, red cabbage, mung beans, asparagus, pickles, radish, corn, scallions, smashed potatoes, egg and scamorza. There's loads of other ingredients I use aswell brocolli, aubergene, swede, celeriac, various beans, kale, saurkraut just depends on what I have in at the time.

Wow!

AramintaWildbloode · 02/10/2025 22:40

Is this for someone you don’t like?

StewkeyBlue · 02/10/2025 22:51

It’s low calorie (depending on how much feta / oil) with lots of bulky veg.

But had protein, an avocado, the potatoes - sounds fine.

What is your problem with it OP?

MiddleOfHere · 02/10/2025 22:52

Volume/quantity-wise, this would be inadequate for me. I find salads disappointing at best, though.

childofthe607080s · 02/10/2025 22:59

dh would have more potatoes

childofthe607080s · 02/10/2025 22:59

The avacado alone could be 300caloreis so I don’t see it as low cal dinner

Dery · 02/10/2025 23:00

I think it sounds mostly delicious (i might opt for different salad veggies). As others have said, whether it’s enough or too much depends on a range of variables. But i like food and i like eating and am damn sure i could get through that in one sitting.

ilovepixie · 02/10/2025 23:03

Add some chips and a couple of rounds of bread and butter and it’s a perfect meal!

NoSoapJustUseShowerGel · 02/10/2025 23:05

Half a red onion 🤢

Pigeontails · 02/10/2025 23:07

I would say that’s on the larger side for a salad, but there’s nothing wrong with it. You do you and all that.

MrsDoylesTeaTray · 02/10/2025 23:08

SummerFeverVenice · 02/10/2025 21:27

That is alot of food.
