Is this a reasonable amount of salad for one person for their evening meal?

Two celery stalks
One chicken breast
Five baby potatoes
Half a red onion
Cucumber
Four small beetroot balls
One medium avocado
Watercress, rocket and spinach leaves
Chopped feta

With a dressing of anchovies, lemon juice, olive oil, mustard and honey.

YANBU - That’s definitely enough. On the large side, even.
YABU - That’s not enough.

Yes, it’s fine.

You will get some insane answers on here though.

What do you think? Did you feel full afterwards?

Titasaducksarse · 02/10/2025 21:33

Ooo you greedy cow....one rocket leaf suffices

À WHOLE leaf?! Urrrggg!!!
That is a MASSIVE salad!!

Cakeandusername · 02/10/2025 21:35

Is it feeling not enough as it’s a cold meal and cold day (I’ve had hotpot in comparison)

Hedgehog23 · 02/10/2025 21:35

Two sticks of celery too many.

Londonrach1 · 02/10/2025 21:35

It's not a balanced diet and it's too much salad in one sitting.

DDivaStar · 02/10/2025 21:37

Sounds like a substantial salad but salad is mainly water tbh. Its alot of red onion !

HeddaGarbled · 02/10/2025 21:37

It’s OK for quantity but I wouldn’t enjoy it much. I’d want the chicken breast to have been marinated in something flavourful, more potato, leave off the celery, beetroot and feta, and add a big dollop of mayo.

What? How on earth isn’t it balanced?

Is this a massive Mumsnet salad?

MajesticWhine · 02/10/2025 21:39

Sounds nice. It's big enough. I would have no problem eating it all.

Haemagoblin · 02/10/2025 21:39

That sounds amazing OP and just right for a main meal. Chicken breast is lean, feta is low fat - the highest fat/calorie item is the whole avocado but FFS it's an AVOCADO, it's hardly the last days of Rome. And I LOVE red onion and always put a whole one on any salad I eat (and have no friends 😂)

BCBird · 02/10/2025 21:40

I'd eat it all bar the avocado. Once digested would be tempted to have a nice dessert

SorryNotSorry00 · 02/10/2025 21:40

I don’t know what’s excessive about any of what you described. I mean I’d swap the celery for cherry tomatoes and sliced peppers myself but that’s just a matter of personal taste. As for whoever said it’s a lot of salad, it’s easily known that many people don’t eat enough vegetables. I grew up in a home where we ate little fruit and veg but as an adult I try to change that.

Same. God forbid someone eats too much… onion

if I’m eating salad I eat the entire bag of salad leaves. Volume eating

TheWytch · 02/10/2025 21:41

Sounds great to me. As a veggie though I'd leave out the chicken breast.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/10/2025 21:41

It sounds lovely!

How much is enough surely depends on how hungry you were!

PauliesWalnuts · 02/10/2025 21:42

If I ate that for my lunch in the office I wouldn’t be able to cycle the 10 miles home - I’d need a lot more carbs than 5 baby spuds.

Ineffable23 · 02/10/2025 21:43

I think it sounds enough but maybe not loads. I might want a bit of bread and butter with it.

Arregaithel · 02/10/2025 21:43

@Saveusename

It depends, if the person eating has a heavy manual labour type job it might not suffice.

Toomanywaterbottles · 02/10/2025 21:43

Sounds fine to me.

ComtesseDeSpair · 02/10/2025 21:43

If you’re full after eating it then it’s reasonable. If you’re still hungry, then it’s not reasonable. That’s really all there is to it.

Lucy5678 · 02/10/2025 21:44

How long is a piece of string? It varies depending on the person’s calorie needs, previous meals that day, food preferences, exercise regime, size, age….

I’d call chicken, potatoes and veg a decent dinner, yes. As a slightly overweight middle aged woman who had a decent lunch and is allergic to exercise.

If the person eating the salad was a six foot and still growing male teenager who had done a couple of hours of sports training and had had only had a bowl of soup for lunch then no it’s not enough.

If the person is my granny, that salad would feed her for a week because she eats all her calories at breakfast and then nibbles at things the rest of the day.

BlouseyBrowne · 02/10/2025 21:44

Seems excessive to me.

incognitomouse · 02/10/2025 21:45

Sounds bang on the money for me. I can't eat more than 1500 calories a day without gaining weight so that's more or less a usual dinner for me, but sometimes I'd even leave the chicken out.

Haemagoblin · 02/10/2025 21:45

Oh man I am now ABSOLUTELY DESPERATE for a halloumi salad. With little sweety drop peppers and RED ONION and cucumber and tomatoes and loads of rocket with a french dressing. Ooh or balsamic glaze. That's tomorrow's lunch taken care of!

(NB always try to have half a block of halloumi with a salad but once I start cutting somehow the whole brick seems to end up in the frying pan. I know I am AWFUL)
