I mean, how many sweets must Haribo sell, to be able to afford to show their irritating ads SO often?

Out of curiosity..is your username from the Specials record Gangsters?

No although I do love that song. It's from a serious accident when I was a child and guess what the other kids called me.

Lol, my 20 year old niece wouldn't recognise them. Are you gen z?

No, a millennial! But I just googled and when Harry met sally came out in 89? Way before me!

Jojoanna · 30/09/2025 09:28

I hate the one in school where they all cheer the boy for going to the loo ,, and his classmate pulls his finger 🤢

cornflakecrunchie · 30/09/2025 09:55

Just wondering.. I mean, ads must work, or they wouldn't spend all that money on them.. but have you seen any that have actually spurred you on to buy their product?
I can't think of ANY.. even Pepto Bismol.. ;-)

Ah but it's not about making you buy the product, it's about brand recognition. People are more likely to buy something they have heard of, and I think it's something like something needs to be mentioned twenty times before the name sinks into the memory. So they are just trying to put their name out there so when you are in the shop and surrounded by 50 types of, say, stomach remedy, you will see Pepto Bismol and think 'I've heard of that' and buy it.

Not that the ads will directly make you rush out to purchase said item. It's subtler than that.

cornflakecrunchie · 30/09/2025 10:26

@Vroomfondleswaistcoat I see!
I'd heard of Gaviscon before that, it's firmly fixed in my mind, & I always choose that (or cheaper own brand) so you're probably right!

Kids can be so cruel
Thanks for the reply.

All of them, but especially those with slow, warbling female singers killing a previously good pop song. I mute the tv for adverts every single time!

FirstCuppa · 30/09/2025 10:51

I deliberately watch everything on catch-up and mute adverts these days. Too much CGI eyes on chins, manly mouths on babies - all of it is horrid.

The Domino hoo-hoo shite seems to have been going on for a hundred years. It's just not a clever idea and actually makes me want to get my pizza from Pizza Hut!

I think a lot of ads push me away from what they are selling because the ads show how stupid they think their customers are.

Oh just thought of the Tena lady one where she says "I've let it allll goooo" and grins because she's pissed herself on the mat. Nice.

Horrace · 30/09/2025 10:59

The ones about gushing periods and the diarrhoea singing in a Welsh accent.
I have to grab the remote at lightening speed to mute or switch off before I put a fist through the telly

IAmThePrettiestManOnMyIsland · 30/09/2025 13:01

@LikeWhoUsesTypewritersAnyway

'I hate this too. ANYone licking a yogurt lid just makes me wanna hurl! 😖'

It should be illegal 😂

OMG that is fecking awful! It's on every ad break when you play Channel 4 On Demand! So it's hard to avoid.

'Errrr I think you, as an employer, should tell me what the salary is.....' 'no you say what you want.' 'But you tell me what it is please.' 'But YOU need to tell me what you want.' 'But maybe you could give me an idea.' 'No YOU!'

Fecking daft, annoying ad. And he has an annoying pinched little face! 😆

No, it's on every ad break when you play Channel 4 on demand.

Advertisers are targeting you specifically with messages if it's on streaming TV. That's why it might feel like there are fewer different ads and you're seeing the same ones repeatedly.

Well that's horrifying.
The algorithms think I want Dominos, Tena Lady and a job as that horrible Indeed jobs recruitment ad comes up a lot for me too (agree it is absolutely ridiculous to think the HR wouldn't have a salary bracket down for an interview - is it trying to make her look stupid? It's grating).

Portakalkedi · 30/09/2025 15:54

Just about all of them. I mute the volume but I'm sure the audio is as bad as the visual. The last one that I considered good was the Twix one with two bears. The ones which 'sponsor' a programme by having the same ad, and often ONLY that ad in the frequent breaks, ensure that I will never ever buy that product. This is all catchup TV, don't watch live TV but I imagine it's even worse.

That Sainsbury's one with bald Wayne and his crap acting.. makes me cringe
Another vote for that bloody awful Molly Mae and also the one where the people have lips in their forehead that are speaking ..

Auburngal · 30/09/2025 17:04

Oh my gush sanitary towels

OneSharpGoose · 30/09/2025 17:10

The travel insurance one where the smug couple are off on their second holiday this year and she's surprised thst her chosen company covers all conditions. She gets so excited informing her husband they will even cover HIS condition . Apart from patronising smugness whatever condition has he got that she wont name it and thought it might not be eligible for insurance. ?

Leilaandtheloggerheads · 29/09/2025 20:06

I came here to say Pepto Bismol 😂 who thought that song was a great idea?! Haha!

The “hold my hand” ad is Jet2, not Tui. Agree it’s fucking annoying!!

Jet2 play that song when boarding and disembark. My friend was on a Jet2 plane which had a technical issue, which delayed the flight departure time by an hour and a half. They had this song on a loop. Thank goodness for headphones/earphones she said. I don’t think the crew can switch off the song

cornflakecrunchie · 30/09/2025 18:39

@Portakalkedi The twix bears WERE funny!

Does anyone else see the one with the adjustable chairs to help older / frail people stand, & just WAIT for it to dump the guy on the floor while it's tipping him upright? ;-)

Those ads never show the real end user.
The actor's are full of the joys of spring and very healthy looking the only nod to ageing is grey hair.

There's a new one I posted about yesterday for Sofology. A mom and daughter are in a pet shop choosing a Guinea pig, they reject several and then get a colour swatch out and it turns out they want one in rusty brown to match their new sofa!
Don't know why but it just annoyed me.

Reminds me of going to buy a new carpet, I wanted pale sage green. At the time I had a pair of cord jeans of exactly the right colour so I finished up lying on loads of carpet samples!

JudgeJ · 30/09/2025 18:47

Mama2many73 · 28/09/2025 18:23

Pesto bismol! Who the fuck thought that idea up??
The detergent where EVERYTHING is white!! Dont bloody paint with your kid with them and yourselves in white clothes!

Am I the only one who can't recall seeing Pepto Bismol adverts? Maybe I've just been lucky.
