People who wear winter coats now aren’t going to feel the benefits of coat when it’s a lot colder

It’s 16c today and see many people wearing padded/quilted coats now. They are going to feel colder wearing this when it’s 6c max.
I doubt it’s about cost.

Your username🙏🏻 😂 I actually showed that clip to someone yday who had never seen it before. It’ll completely out me if I say why - tho tbh anyone who knows me will know it’s me anyway 😂It still makes me laugh so much! It’s my favourite scene if any of the sitcoms, and most were nowhere near as good it

Itsasecretnow · 27/09/2025 10:52

@liveforsummer Pssst…don’t tell anyone but I may have even been wearing mine during part of the summer too! 🤫

Poor cold teeny tinies. Maybe they should eat some pies and then they wouldn't need a coat?

lol, what? I'm 15 stone and I am freezing!

MissScarletInTheBallroom · 27/09/2025 10:53

So, you want them to be cold today in case wearing a coat today makes them feel cold later?

usedtobeaylis · 27/09/2025 10:53

I don't think that's how it works

Yeah, I’m freezing at 9 stone and I was freezing when I was 14 stone! I used to get baffled by the assumptions on here that everyone overweight was a big sweaty mess all the time.

Gettingbysomehow · 27/09/2025 11:01

What old fashioned nonsense.

It's quite strange.

I feel the cold so much more than my 12 stone dad, for example!

There’s all sorts of factors involved in how cold we feel. For example, I’m often low in iron and that can make you feel cold in 27 degree heat!

AliceMaforethought · 27/09/2025 11:08

Why is it any of your business? You sound like a silly old granny.

I'm pretty sure I'm low iron too, which would make sense!

How about a bit of ageism?

It's true, though. OP is just repeating and old wives' tale.

FurForksSake · 27/09/2025 11:23

I’m 8st and feel the heat or cold appropriately and wear a coat when wearing a coat is required and don’t wear a coat when a coat is not required.

MyDogHumpsThings · 27/09/2025 11:25

Absolutely a huge problem. Someone should alert the church elders immediately! 🥲

shuffleofftobuffalo · 27/09/2025 11:33

I keep saying this to DD about her thick winter flannel pyjama bottoms.

Butterflybum · 27/09/2025 11:37

You would hate me op. We don’t have heating so I’m often in my coat indoors.
It’s often warmer outside.

KillerMounjaro · 26/09/2025 17:49

I hope you don’t comment on what these people are wearing then.

I never wear a coat and nearly always wear a short sleeved top even in winter and people comment on it all time - to the point where I feel like I’m always talking about how I don’t wear a coat.

It’s them that bring it up, though, not me!

I agree so much with you on this!

I work in a primary school and through the winter, the heating is on and my classroom is really warm, and I’m constantly moving around, so I always feel hot, even when it’s freezing outside. When it comes to break duty, I often don’t put a coat on (I’ll be wearing something like leggings and boots, chunky knit etc) as I’ve been so warm in the classroom that the blast of cold air for 15mins whilst I’m on duty is really nice. I just don’t feel I need my coat. But the AMOUNT of people who comment on it EVERY DAY drives me insane. As soon as I step outside another teacher will be there like “Oo where’s your coat, aren’t you cold?” A few mins later another adult. “Gosh why haven’t you got a coat on?” At the end of duty as we are lining up to come in, a third person. “Oh my, how have you survived this weather without a coat?” It drives me insane as it’s honestly at least three people every time and I just can’t understand why people are so bothered, why they feel a need to comment, why they can’t just get the hell over it.
It also happens on my way in in the morning. I often just don’t bother taking a coat to work as I just don’t need it, being inside for the majority of the day. But as I walk in, the office staff often comment things like “where’s your coat?” / “aren’t you cold without a coat?” / “have you left your coat in the car?”
It might sound like I’m exaggerating but I’m really, really not. It’s constant and even though I’ve told the same people over and over that I’m quite alright, I don’t need my coat right now, I’m very warm from the classroom and enjoying cooling down etc, they still seem to consistently ask and pass comment.

Why did you post this here?

Comefromaway · 27/09/2025 12:22

I wore my padded coat last week because it was raining and my other cists don’t have a hood. When it’s colder I will wear layers.

CarefulN0w · 27/09/2025 12:24

Firstly, you won’t feel the benefit is utter bollocks. When it’s really cold, it’s important to maintain your body temperature and not lose heat. There is absolutely no benefit whatsoever to waiting to get colder before adding extra layers. Unless you are trying to put a positive spin on hypothermia.

Secondly, I have 2 gorgeous swishy wool coats that I prefer not to wear in the rain, so bright, but chilly autumn days are an opportunity to wear them, knowing that in January, I’ll be in a considerably less stylish, padded waterproof with thermals & a jumper underneath.

NewDayNewColour · 27/09/2025 12:49

The elderly round my way have been wearing anoraks since September 1st!

Timeforabitofpeace · 27/09/2025 13:18

@AliceMaforethought She is not. The age of her example is irrelevant.

shuffleofftobuffalo · 27/09/2025 11:33

I keep saying this to DD about her thick winter flannel pyjama bottoms.

Why?

If she’s warm, she’s warm. It won’t suddenly stop making her warm one day.

Right now my mum and I are cleaning together. She’s in light linen trousers and a t shirt, I’m in heavy jeans, an t-shirt and a fleece top. She’s got nothing on her feet, I’ve got socks and slippers. Outside it’s apparently 16°, feels like 13°. We’re both warm and comfortable and don’t feel the need to comment on what the other is wearing!

northernballer · 27/09/2025 13:51

I wear two coats when it's really cold, a quilted Raab and then a huge long padded coat from Mango. I get so cold!
