People who wear winter coats now aren’t going to feel the benefits of coat when it’s a lot colder

It’s 16c today and see many people wearing padded/quilted coats now. They are going to feel colder wearing this when it’s 6c max.
I doubt it’s about cost.

I don’t feel the cold unless I’m ill. The main reason being that I’m fat as fuck

It’s fine that people feel temperatures differently. It’s just that some people act like feeling cold is a failing and have a condescending attitude to those who do feel cold. You see it on the competitive heating threads: ‘I am hot when it’s 12C, and I work in a t shirt with the kitchen door wide open’. I actually saw that comment last winter.

BertieBotts · 26/09/2025 21:28

If you need to trick yourself into believing that your coat is warming you up (feel the benefit) then your coat isn't warm enough.

ThreePointOneFourOneFiveNine · 26/09/2025 21:29

You underestimate how many extra layers I can fit under my giant winter coat as the weather gets colder. You also underestimate my willingness to just stay indoors and not bother with the cold at all for the worst of it.

I’ve said this to my 12yo. She already has her winter coat on, scarf, tights and thermal socks on!!! She does have raynauds (?) but it still isn’t that cold.

My 13 year old has Raynauds. She had to be brought indoors during Sports Day in the summer as her hands went completely numb (it was very windy) It's a miserable bloody condition that nobody really understands unless they have it.

Yes, I also have raynauds and buy my big coats a couple of sizes up so I can fit other coats underneath. it’s still incredibly mild during the day and I have on vest, t shirt or long sleeve top, jumper and fleece as standard. I’m only on 2 pairs of socks atm and yet to bring out the boots with the sheepskin insoles. Looking forward to trying out the heated gilet I bought in the sale

some people who don’t feel the cold, see it as some great achievement of theirs and have a superiority complex over those who do get cold. I find it such a strange thing to be proud of!

Whenever I meet someone who doesn’t feel the cold they’re fat. It helps.

Mum? Is that you?

lazyarse123 · 26/09/2025 22:14

Dh always asks if it's warm outside and then says "don't know why I'm asking you you're never cold". It's not always as much fun as it sounds.
We go to a lot of national trust houses and by the time we get upstairs I'm practically melting. I am fat but I've always run hot even when thin.
The only thing I think when I see people in coats is that I would just die if I were wearing it.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 26/09/2025 22:15

I wear a padded jacket now, I will add thermal layers understand as it gets colder.

Except where I am, it’s not cold. 17° today

I’m fat.

I feel the cold.

I’ve been wearing my winter coat in the mornings most days. It’s been 7 degrees max, feels like 3. I go by the feels like, not the actual.

if it’s 25 degrees but feels like 15, I’ll dress for 15.

It’s 17 where I am and it’s freezing. What’s cold to one person isn’t to another and vice versa.

Sunsetoasis · 26/09/2025 23:34

Come winter I’m in merino base layers, mohair socks, a wooly hat with a hat underneath, and a full length snowman themed fleece hoodie. and that’s just for bed lol.
i just haven’t started the layers yet, I reckon I’ll be alright.

EchoedSilence · 26/09/2025 23:47

Poor cold teeny tinies. Maybe they should eat some pies and then they wouldn't need a coat?

Itsasecretnow · 26/09/2025 23:49

Many moons ago, when I was young, my mother always told us to take our coats off indoors, “otherwise you won’t feel the benefit when you go back out”!

Yes, and also a still, bright 17° day will feel a lot nicer than an overcast 17° day with a wind from the north, for example.

Exactly. I’m also low in iron so that doesn’t help. I’m pretty much permanently cold lately.

ninjahamster · 26/09/2025 23:53

People just have different tolerances don’t they? And will wear more layers? I don’t actually own a winter coat, just a mac! I don’t feel the cold at all.

Are you my twin? I’m already in the sheepskin boots with the thick layer of wool inside, and currently in 2 pairs of socks and some tights. And I’m in the house!

Yes. That's about 63° F. Where I live there would be plenty of people in shorts and/or t-shirts at that temperature. I would likely be wearing jeans, a t-shirts, and flip-flops.

Also I don't think coats work the way OP thinks they do. I have a coat that's rated to keep you warm down to -20° F (-28° C). When I wear it when it's 30° F, that doesn't make it less warm when it's colder than that.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 27/09/2025 00:21

I've never understood this logic. If somebody is cold now, they're cold. Just like if somebody is hot, they're hot and shouldn't be told they must wear a jumper/jacket/coat or they'll never get to appreciate being able to take them off and feel cooler.

I’m not fat (BMI 21), I do feel the cold but I don’t wear a coat until it drops closer to freezing than 5 degrees because if I’m outside I’m walking up and down hills and the activity keeps me warm. I usually put a hat and scarf on with my hoodie before I wear my coat. In the house I feel colder because I’m not as active.

DarkForces · 27/09/2025 08:43

Don't worry. I have various thicknesses of winter coats and can add layers and gloves. I'll build up as I need to, but thanks for your concern

INB4 · 27/09/2025 09:38

Of course they will. What are you talking about?
