People who wear winter coats now aren’t going to feel the benefits of coat when it’s a lot colder

It’s 16c today and see many people wearing padded/quilted coats now. They are going to feel colder wearing this when it’s 6c max.
I doubt it’s about cost.

OP posts:

How does it work OP. I wear my coat today at 16degrees and I feel warm. I wear it at -3 degrees and I’m still warm and toasty. Your post makes no sense

Anywherebuthere · 26/09/2025 18:31

People adjust layers as needed.

I was told that about hot radiators.

It was pregnancy/ birth that actually did it.

I was told that sitting with my back to the open fire would melt the marrow in my back!

Anyway, I've never understood why feeling cold today is preferable to feeling cold at a future date

(Same argument about early lunch. Oh you can't eat now or you'll be hungry later. Yeah but I'm hungry now!)

Merrilydancing · 26/09/2025 19:12

Wasn’t going to be wearing my shorts and t shirt as I scraped the ice off of my car this week.

Yamamm · 26/09/2025 19:15

Has the entire UK lost its sense of humour? Can’t believe how many people are responding seriously.

Anyway I wore my coat today to store heat to help me through the rest of winter.

TeenToTwenties · 26/09/2025 19:18

I'm wearing my winter coat occasionally, but with fewer layers than I will be wearing in December. Makes sense to me.

Didimum · 26/09/2025 19:20

Must be a slow news day.

FuzzyWolf · 26/09/2025 19:22

YABU and it’s rubbish they won’t feel the benefit. Going from the warmth to the cold means you will always get the benefit of a coat and as it gets colder, people can layer up or wear thicker/warmer coats.

SweetPenelope · 26/09/2025 19:22

"You won't feel the benefit when you go outside" is a weird British phrase said by people who don't like people wearing coats indoors or (judging by the OP) in the Autumn. It makes no sense. You're still wearing the coat outside. Of course it still works as a coat! You won't feel like you don't have a coat.

Twinkylightsg · 26/09/2025 19:22

It's how you wear it.

Could be wearing it with light clothing under. Then when gets colder with thicker clothes etc. Would make a difference. Layering matters.

Abitlosttoday · 26/09/2025 19:25

This thread has broken a hysteria that has been simmering in me all day. So funny and ridiculous. Why do you care? What a person wore yesterday won't impact their body temperature tomorrow! 😂

Readyforslippers · 26/09/2025 19:35

The current weather is really throwing me. It was 4 degrees when I went to work today and 24 by the time I finished. I prefer days that are clearly hot ir clearly cold. Also I'm ready for cosy season so I just want to wear thick jumpers and coats now please weather.

LadySuzanne · 26/09/2025 19:37

Sleepthief · 26/09/2025 17:45

😂

Is that you, Grandma?

Mmmm. I am in my early 70s. When I was a child, I can remember elderly relatives and friends of my parents saying, "Don't put your coat on in the house - you won't feel the benefit..." We kids thought it was a daft thing to say.

BigButtons · 26/09/2025 19:39

I ah e coats and jackets of many thicknesses. What does it matter what people chose to wear . And it is a complex nonsense about not feeling the benefit. Letting yourself get cold is madness

BitOutOfPractice · 26/09/2025 19:41

17° where I live today. Yanbu.

BauhausOfEliott · 26/09/2025 19:54

Why would you assume you know better than them about what coat they should wear? I doubt your knowledge of another adult’s temperature preferences is superior to their own.

ConnieHeart · 26/09/2025 19:54

They will feel the benefit as no doubt they aren't wearing their winter coat constantly, ie they take it off indoors

intrepidpanda · 26/09/2025 19:55

I'm here debating whether it's too hot for tights

I don't think it was meant as a joke

Tastaturen · 26/09/2025 19:56

I don't tend to concern myself with other random folk's clothes.

Comedycook · 26/09/2025 19:58

I'm still wearing summer dresses because I will not accept it's autumn. September is still summer as far as I'm concerned...and next week it will be 19 degrees in London.

PotolKimchi · 26/09/2025 19:59

Some of us have more than one coat.

You can layer up under the coat as it gets warmer.

As long as I am warm whatever the temperature what does it matter HOW I get there?!

user2848502016 · 26/09/2025 19:59

They might wear more layers underneath when it’s colder?

MJMa · 26/09/2025 20:01

What an odd musing.

Keroppi · 26/09/2025 20:01

I personally love going out and feeling the nip in the air and then putting a layer on. To feel the benefit 🤣
I haven't got my winter bits out yet but I am in an oodie at home! My lounge is freezing but it's lovely in the sun. South West here
Love the autumn weather! Walks on the beach wrapped up with a flask!
Not needed big coat yet or hats etc. Just layers and a good fleece.
