People who wear winter coats now aren’t going to feel the benefits of coat when it’s a lot colder

It’s 16c today and see many people wearing padded/quilted coats now. They are going to feel colder wearing this when it’s 6c max.
I doubt it’s about cost.

I’ve said this to my 12yo. She already has her winter coat on, scarf, tights and thermal socks on!!! She does have raynauds (?) but it still isn’t that cold.

I have Raynauds and am cold at anything under 25 degrees. I’m only truly comfortable at 30 degrees plus. Please don’t underestimate how cold your DD might be feeling.

I’m doing the morning dog walk in my big down coat already. The colder it gets, the more layers and warm accessories I will add.

LDNloveandlife · 26/09/2025 20:07

Who gives a sh*t? 😂

rainbowprincesschapell · 26/09/2025 20:09

let's just go out without a coat then 🙄

Newsenmum · 26/09/2025 20:10

So youre supposed to go around feeling cold just in case?

LegoTherapy · 26/09/2025 20:10

No coats here yet and it’s been 5C. Just a hoody.

Happygolucky314 · 26/09/2025 20:10

Are you for real? So a coat stops you from getting warm because you wore it a month before you should have had to? Are you insane

Newsenmum · 26/09/2025 20:12

Your body reacts to the change in temp immediately before or after it. So coming out of a heated home will feel cold whatever.

It’s like saying dont put the fan on if its 30 degrees as might become 35.

I love the phrase feel the benefit. You're my fave poster today 😁 🌟

It’s an old wives tale. Older people said it to me when I was a child;

’Don’t put your coat on until you leave the house, otherwise you won’t feel the benefit of it’.

Dd is wearing hers.
In winter she'll wear 2-3.

Supercallyeggsontoast · 26/09/2025 20:43

This thread title has made my day

SellFridges · 26/09/2025 20:47

YANBU. It’s a bit chilly in a morning but once you’ve walked a few hundred metres you soon warm up. It’s been 16 degrees here today, that’s not padded coat weather.

Charlottejbt · 26/09/2025 20:48

YABU. When it''s really cold I wear two coats.

(Unless the hot flushes I'm starting to get continue... then I'll be walking around in my scanties.)

TheHillIsMine · 26/09/2025 20:49

Are you for real?

A coat doesn't only keep one warm a certain amount of time.

VivaForever81 · 26/09/2025 20:50

I got back from a two week holiday yesterday, it has been 40 degrees plus everyday, I have been bloody freezing since I stepped of the plane.

FurForksSake · 26/09/2025 20:52

I find coats pretty pointless unless I’m out for a walk. I’ll happily walk cold cross a carpark to get somewhere because I hate driving in a coat or a jacket. I did put my waxed jacket on the other day as I was walking a fair distance early morning.

For proper winter I have a north face winter coat, but it needs to be pretty cold for that to go on. Otherwise it’s my joules short rain jacket or my fat face waxed jacket or an oversized denim for this time of year.

I definitely think people can be poor at layering, I’m sure people think I’m mad when I’m going for a long walk in cold weather and not wearing a big coat, but I’ll likely have a thermal base, micro fleece and a shell. Add in a buff, hat and gloves and thermal leggings and within ten minutes I’ll be warm and in another ten losing layers. Be bold start cold as they say!

Also padded / quilted doesn’t necessarily equal warm.

Betsylee · 26/09/2025 20:52

I agree OP, I can't understand why people are wearing boots either, it's just a bit chilly, not cold!
I gradually approach cold weather with winter clothes but everyone seems to be going full at it now, I d seen people wearing thick coats and jumpers at the end of August, god knows why!

MagicLoop · 26/09/2025 20:52

Because science? Honestly, that's not how temperature works.

CliveBixbee · 26/09/2025 20:54

We've had a lovely warm summer and it's the drop that has people feeling the chill.

Maybe we're getting more Mediterranean in our approach - like when you see all the locals wandering around Seville in February in full puffas, hats and scarves when it is 20 degrees!

I've got Raynauds, and it can be triggered so easily when it gets chilly. I can get numb fingers at the height of summer if the air con is on in the car.

It was a lot worse as a teenager as well, with the impact of starting periods and not knowing the best way to dress to keep warm so I hope you're being sympathetic to her!

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 26/09/2025 21:01

Layers. I’m wearing my long, padded coat with no jumper/cardigan, when it gets colder I’ll just wear more layers under my coat.

KookyRoseCrab · 26/09/2025 21:03

My big padded coat is on cause I’m cold 🥶

Justacigarette · 26/09/2025 21:08

ProfDBS · 26/09/2025 17:44

some people who don’t feel the cold, see it as some great achievement of theirs and have a superiority complex over those who do get cold. I find it such a strange thing to be proud of!

I don’t feel the cold unless I’m ill. The main reason being that I’m fat as fuck

Motherhubbardscupboard · 26/09/2025 21:11

I had a teacher who used to say this when we were sitting at our desks frozen in a temporary classroom. So I've thought it was rubbish since I was 10 years old!

dropoutin · 26/09/2025 21:25

Is the idea supposed to be that the human body has some kind of unconscious physical memory mechanism, meaning that how cold it feels in October is determined by how cold it felt in September?

If so I'm pretty sure that's made up bollocks with no basis in reality.
