People who wear winter coats now aren’t going to feel the benefits of coat when it’s a lot colder

It’s 16c today and see many people wearing padded/quilted coats now. They are going to feel colder wearing this when it’s 6c max.
I doubt it’s about cost.

It was in fact 6 degrees this morning at my school drop off so I wore my big coat. I haven't got home to change since and I'm not carrying two around!

MumoftwoNC · 26/09/2025 17:58

I used to feel the cold really badly. Then after my pregnancies my body changed in lots of ways and I am now never cold.

It's no achievement, it's just one of those things. It's not a sign of fitness or good health particularly - I never have time to get any exercise or a proper night's sleep so I'm not in better health than I was

InfoSecInTheCity · 26/09/2025 17:58

I’ve lost a lot of weight since last winter and I am really feeling the cold. I now understand how everyone else felt when I was size 24 in short sleeves or a light hoodie in zero degree weather. I’m seriously considering just taking to my bed with a heated blanket and hibernating for the winter, or renting a long term Airbnb in Spain and wintering somewhere warmer.

AutieAdult · 26/09/2025 17:59

Some people really feel the cold just generally or due to illness.

Thedogscollar · 26/09/2025 18:02

I was also told as a child if you sit on a cold wall you will get piles!!
Equally mad "advice"

BogRollBOGOF · 26/09/2025 18:04

The dog walkers were in substantial coats this morning.

I had some thin gloves on. And a cotton ¾ sleeve shirt. Still walked up a sweat.
It's jacket season, but not big coat time.

I hardly used my Big Coat last winter as it was mostly pretty mild.

I was told that about hot radiators.

It was pregnancy/ birth that actually did it.

There are many threads on MN about children refusing to wear coats in winter. Perhaps they're being pragmatic, and saving their coats for later.

SunshineMountain · 26/09/2025 18:07

Well today I had on a vest top, a long sleeve tshirt, a jumper and when I was outside I in a very very thick sheepskin coat, when I was inside at work I was in a fleece. In winter I will also have gloves, scarf and hat too! 🤣🤣🤣 Everyone that thinks I’m weird is probably walking around in short sleeve tshirts and I think they’re weird. But ah well.. as long as we’re all happy and are comfortable temperatures, who cares… even if we do look weird to others 🤷🏽‍♀️😂

UnhappyHobbit · 26/09/2025 18:08

Oh you’re reminding me of my Granny. What id give to have her lecture me about feeling the benefit of coats indoors again.

I saw a woman in an ankle length quilted coat and a knitted bobble hat yesterday. It was very strange. It was really warm here and a lot of people were in t shirts.

Probably an American. There’s a huge number of videos on social media lately with Americans who have moved to the UK freaking out about how cold/wet/windy it is and asking is it winter and if this weather is normal. They’re all freezing and hate it.

Seeing their reaction to brits telling them this is autumn and it’s basically still summer temperatures/weather brightens my day.

coxesorangepippin · 26/09/2025 18:09

True story

coxesorangepippin · 26/09/2025 18:09

Gotta love a dressed up yank

SunshineMountain · 26/09/2025 18:10

Also, on Tuesday morning on our commute to work and school the temperature got down to 3.5°c. That’s thick coat weather in my opinion

RedRiverShore5 · 26/09/2025 18:10

I have different stages of winter coat

GagMeWithASpoon · 26/09/2025 18:13

It was in fact, 6 degrees , this morning when I left the house on foot. Then I spent about 2 hours outside until 11 o’clock. It was NOT 16 degrees!
Was I a bit warm on the way home? Yes, but that’s why I layer up. I’m not going to freeze my arse off to satisfy some random on the internet.

CornflakeGirlsClub · 26/09/2025 18:15

It was cold this morning when I left for work and I’m down south (London). I had a long wrap coat on. Very few folks not wearing a coat of some sort.

I actually wished I’d brought my gloves as my hands were freezing!

I’m wearing my winter coat with fairly thin clothes as I’m only cold when I’m outside. When it’s really cold later in the year, I’ll wear the same coat with warmer / thicker clothes underneath it. It’s not rocket science 😂

Different people feel the cold differently. In the winter people who feel the cold will layer up more under their coat/ wear thicker jumpers or thermals.

This!

StrongLikeMamma · 26/09/2025 18:17

Let them.

itispersonal · 26/09/2025 18:18

I’ve said this to my 12yo. She already has her winter coat on, scarf, tights and thermal socks on!!! She does have raynauds (?) but it still isn’t that cold.

GloryFades · 26/09/2025 18:19

I don’t understand - I should be cold now so I can be just the same level of cold in 3 months time?

If the coat insulates how I feel by say 2 degrees, whether I wear it at 16 and feel 18 or wear it at 2 and feel 4, I’m still going to feel colder in winter?

You’ll be incensed to know I wore jeans in summer and rarely wore shorts.

How about let me decide how I want to regulate my body temperature, which is to be as warm as possible at every given moment.

Newmeagain · 26/09/2025 18:22

Hmm, I sometimes think that too! 🤣

but it feels really cold today. The temperature has really gone down and there has been no sunshine.

EsmaCannonball · 26/09/2025 18:24

Won't anyone think of poor Liam Gallagher? He probably goes to the Maldives, Tahiti, Honolulu, and all the time permanently effing freezing. Should've listened to his nan.

Vaxtable · 26/09/2025 18:25

By which time they will be wearing layers under the coat, so thicker jumpers etc, plus gloves hat and scarf to keep warm
