Are all of us foreigners just going to be told to pack up and leave if Reform win?

1000 replies

Onegingerhead · 26/09/2025 16:03

I might be totally unreasonable here (or not), but please hear me out.
(Bloody) foreigner here — I’ve lived in the UK since 2001. Built my whole life here: house, husband, DC, the lot. Worked the whole time in a field that requires the highest level of qualification.
I’m getting increasingly worried about the talk of Reform winning in 2029. Some even say it could be sooner if Labour are pushed into early elections. This week (as we all heard) our beloved Reform suggested rescinding ILR or even settled status from Europeans. God knows what else they’ll come up with, I honestly wouldn’t be surprised if they went after naturalised Brits next and started revoking citizenship, just to please the voters.
I know a lot of foreign-born women — some married to born-and-bred Brits, some to other Europeans (not always from the same country), some to men from overseas. All sorts of combinations.
So what do you think lies ahead for us? Will we be politely asked to leave, or will things just get so hostile that we’re pushed out anyway? And how likely is it that people who aren’t very white, or who have an accent, will face more discrimination in work?
I’m meeting my foreign friends tonight and we’ll be talking about it. For most of us, moving now would be incredibly difficult. We’re late 30s to early 50s, and starting over in a new country isn’t exactly easy. Some of us are married to men from different countries entirely, and we don’t even speak each other’s languages well enough to get proper jobs there.

AIBU and should think we will actually be allowed to stay?
AINBU sorry but you’d better start planning your move now

If Farage carries out his threat to deport foreigners it will be an own goal since his concubine is french!

I have no time for Farage but his girlfriend/partner really isn’t the problem and it’s not her policy.

To be fair, I don’t expect British citizens to stand up for us. I wouldn’t want them to feel guilty or uneasy about Reform’s rhetoric either. There have been many lovely replies on this thread, and I’m grateful that most people haven’t fallen for anti-immigrant propaganda.
I’m just trying to protect myself, my family, and my friends from what I see coming. I can’t control everything, but I’ll do my best

Wow, OP. You have really low expectations if you don't think people should feel uneasy about Reform's rhethoric or stand against it, but you do you.

Marieb19 · 26/09/2025 20:43

I think their focus will be on those who don t work, don't integrate and dont speak English. There is no reason why British (and other nationality tax payers) have to provide benefits for those who have never, and never intend to contribute.

Simplestars · 26/09/2025 20:43

Will British expats around the world be send back to the UK?

I would stand up for you and anyone else similarly. We are so privileged in the UK to have people from around the world here.

Although I’m British, so many of my friends aren’t, including my husband. Like you, my husband always thought getting nationality asap was a priority. Thankfully he has it now.

DIYagainstMould · 26/09/2025 20:45

Evelyn is right. We come from EU countries not in vain. Our governments signed up for the EU, we bore the changes, the Withdrawal agreement has legally binding status and we are not taking any shit, excuse me

Lonelycrab · 26/09/2025 20:47

Voted yanbu sadly on your poll as it is brutally clear to me what some reform supporters wish to see: a white Britain for white British people.

No space for anyone else.

There are now millions of hideous posts on SM that back this up. I could post photos of these for weeks.

What a disgraceful place this country has become, and one I’m fast becoming ashamed of. Oh how far we have fallen, all due to a snake oil salesman that tells the dim of thinking what they think they want to hear.

Reform supporters think about this. You lie down with dogs; you get fleas.

At what point have Reform mentioned deporting pensioners who've lived here for decades?! I'd also point out applying for citizenship when you have been living in country for decades should be standard surely?

He is saying people would have to reapply every 5 years for a visa to stay in the country. There would be a minimum income requirement of £60k. If people retire and their income drops below that threshold they won't be able to stay in the country.

Well why don't they get EU citizenship, after all many on this thread think we should prioritise this, so works both ways.

EU countries will be delighted to welcome hundreds of thousands of your retired compatriots as their own citizens...oh wait...they might not be?? Not to worry, Nige will welcome them back and I'm sure pay for their healthcare and lower your taxes in the UK, as all these people are very rich and won't need to rely on social support here...

Your not being able to imagine it doesn't mean that isn't the next step.

I'm foreign, OP. We are getting out for good in November-l- husband, kids, dogs, the whole kid and caboodle. House sold and tickets and dog quarantines booked. Counting down the days

Your whatever maybe can imagine this kind of scenario, mine is not able to. I still believe in sanity of the majority of the people in this country.

Good luck with the move. Are you going to US?

Kendodd · 26/09/2025 20:50

At least if you've got a foreign passport you've got a ticket out. Me and my kids have only got British passports so we're bloody stuck here with them.

Twiglets1 · 26/09/2025 20:50

CallMeEvelyn · 26/09/2025 20:34

How many times...

We will not be paying £2k for retaining lawful rights we already have or for the questionable privilege of voting for your politicians. Farage has to stop forcing this on us by threatening us. Threatening us is unacceptable and all of us, including Brits, should stand against it. Stop minimising and trivialising this issue which you clearly do not understand.

Just because you won't be paying 2k for citizenship doesn't mean no one will be. Lots of people will be and you being rude about the UK doesn't change that.

I agree that Farage shouldn't be threatening people but your language and attitude is also abrasive tbh. So I will leave our conversation there.

ukgone2pot · 26/09/2025 20:52

I haven't heard this, only that they were going to strip non-born citizens of benefits. It's such a complex issue but I think you will be fine for what it's worth.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 26/09/2025 20:52

Not going to happen! No right minded British folk want this, it's utter madness.

AngelicKaty · 26/09/2025 20:54

CallMeEvelyn · 26/09/2025 19:29

Your understanding is wrong.

EU citizens with Settled Status have Indefinite Leave to Remain.

Certain rights they have stem from the Withdrawal Agreement and they are now being threatened by NF.

Please read this: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/articles/c930xypxpqpo
Specifically, the paragraph "Reform said the changes would not apply to EU nationals whose settled status is protected under the European Union Withdrawal Agreement - and who make up the majority of benefit claimants by people with ILR."

Nigel Farage stands in front of a blue background with the word “REFORM” partially visible. He wears a dark blue suit, white shirt, and red checkered tie. He holds up a document titled “Prioritising UK Citizens,” which shows the

Reform plans to scrap indefinite leave to remain for migrants

The party says scrapping the scheme and restricting migrant access to benefits will save hundreds of billions of pounds.

She is not rude, she is fed up, because EU settled status is an internationally agreed document between two parties already

OP does not seem to understand the difference between this, ILR and having a British citizenship.

I have the money to buy the passport but my husband does not want me spending it, yet he is ready to live with me until death do us part.

We don't need to be scared with the 2000 fee because we already have the legal rights. As that simple. Go and study some EU websites

anyolddinosaur · 26/09/2025 20:56

@shuggles Obviously you cant clip a kid around the ear. I have no problem with parents being told their kids are little brats, or even with someone calling the police on them. But when someone claims "This really threw me. I was very paranoid for the whole week after" then they are exaggerating for attention and encouraging other people to be fearful just because someone said something they didnt like. They filmed the teenagers and posted it on tiktok, not the action of someone who is scared.

Blinky21 · 26/09/2025 20:57

You only need to look at the US where Trump is trying to restrict birthright citizenship to know they are perfectly serious

A reform government, should that ever happen, will likely be comprised of an awful lot of not right minded folk.

I urge you to do some research into the character of some of their party members.
They will be the ones making U.K. law should they get elected, god forbid.

I think you will be OK.
I suspect it will only apply to new arrivals and even if not it will be people in low paid unskilled jobs.

Not what he said. Yet another person making up their own version. I wouldn't call £59k a low paid unskilled job.

Farage says the plan would save over £200bn – but the figures have been called into question
