The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

I'd imagine its a statement of support/patriotism for some people when they perceive well loved institutions such as the NHS are under threat due to poor management by successive governments. A means of demonstrating their frustration perhaps.

But we're told on this thread that the flags are a celebration of women's rugby or an expression of national pride, not a political statement about the cost of living.

Ah well that’s helpful then to the NHS. They’re also getting more customers for the NHS too by pushing folk off ladders - true and uplifting support!
So are they being patriotic and showing support for the NHS by backing Farage too? Is privatising it US style what is actually wanted?
If Farage isn’t right enough and you follow Tommy then Musk would also get it privatised if he forced Advance in somehow, as I have never heard an actual policy from Tommy, or Advance yet, I will take the educated guess on the policies Musk would insist upon.

Tommy Robinson is a racist street thug - FACT. Even the likes of Farage sees him as beyond the pale.

Your defence of the racist street thug shows you in your true colours.

The defence on here for the violent, woman hating, paedophile loving, criminal, racist Tommy, takes cocaine and lives in Spain, Robinson is mad.🤯

Maybe they mean the upside down Union flags?

He has convictions for street fighting, football violence, threatening behaviour, drug dealing, stalking, several counts of fraud and contempt of court. He is what any reasonable person would consider scum.

See you're making assumptions about the politics which is unwise imo. Obviously Farage has his fans but the flags and indeed marches represent a much broader spectrum than some people acknowledge.

There's a town fairly close to me diehard Labour for decades and there are flags everywhere.

Probably a bit of defamation there. He's not a great guy obviously but there's no point.breaking the law telling everyone your opinion.

He is violent.
He stalks women who speak against him.
He's friends with paedophiles and campaigns to help them escape justice by jeopardising the trials of paedophiles.
He is a criminal.
He is a racist.
He takes drugs.
He lives in Spain.

I am a law-abiding, tax paying UK citizen. Unlike TR. Breaking the law with my opinion? Catch yerself on.🤣🤣🤣

I don't understand what "catch yerself on" means". But no matter.

A defence to defamation is that your comment was justified so if you can back up the comment that he is "paedophile loving" with evidence then your comment was reasonable.

I'm no defender of TR. I don't know why he's the centre of the immigration debate because I dont think hes a positive infleunce at all. But I'd like it in this debate if for once people just stick to the facts.

So nothing like the ones half mast on lampposts and road signs then Confused

Nobody has epressed any problems with what you are describing.

You are really annoyed about this half mast issue aren't you! Isn't it just that they have all slipped down maybe?!

You are right, the lamp post ones around where I live are more quarter mast.

I dont know why hes at the centre of the immigration debate either. As soon as the UK voted for Brexit TR rushed out to get himself an Irish passport and fucked off to live in Spain.🙈

I can only assume that he targets the vulnerable and the gullible so he can grift off them.🤷‍♀️ That drug habit, his fancy holidays and villa in Spain dont pay for themselves you know.

I don't think that it's clear at all. Why can't people display the flag of the country they are in? As a pp said, you would expect to see a Welsh flag in Wales, or the Saltire in Scotland.

It is crystal clear that it is exclusionary and racist in intent

If it had a swastika on it I'd get what you mean? Or if you put up.a load of Palestinian flags round Golders Green? But English flags in England are perfectly appropriate.

TwistyTurnip · 28/09/2025 15:44

OchreSnail · 27/09/2025 22:17

I've not seen Ukrainian or Palestinian (guessing that's what you mean 🙄) flags hanging on every lamppost - have you?

I've no problem seeing individuals, companies or government building flying flags from a flag pole.

When it's a bunch of shouting idiots messing about with a big ladder in the middle of a busy road, not so much.

Have you not seen the photos of the Palestinian flags lining the streets in Birmingham? Imagine how intimidating that is for some people. I’ve not heard anything about the Council rushing out to take those down. Double standards.

Thank you for cutting through the bullshit @Love4both.Thanks

This is England. The people who live here are English. So do please tell me how it is exclusionary for the national flag of a country to be flown in said country? Do you take issue with the Spanish flag being flown in Spain? Or the Stars and Stripes to be flown in the US? Why is it any different in England?

Of course there's no problem with flying a flag as a matter of routine, or to support the British team in a sporting tournament, or to celebrate a special event such as a jubilee.

There is a problem when people put up the flag in response to racists who advocate deporting anyone who doesn't look like them.

BatchCookBabe · 28/09/2025 16:07

Greenmouldycheese · 27/09/2025 23:09

It doesn't matter if they find it intimidating because there's nothing that can be done about it. If you are in England, expect to see an English flag. Life is tough and there are things that just are the way they are. Get over it and move on.

Yep.
