The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

Neighbours need to draw up a rota to wash them and put them back up. The fabric should be a mix of 60% cotton and 40% polyester. A separate rota should be made to iron the flags to keep them straight. Imo x

What height ladder do you suggest?

MN at its best!
What I said is to leave the flags alone, at least there is any issue with their location (some may block view, be too low, too close to traffic.. or so). Leave the others alone.
And get on with filling potholes, collecting the bins, fixing lights and so on.

I agree with you that would great!

Why would a flag make you uncomfortable? I stick mine up during football and I can’t imagine why it would upset anyone. 🙄

It will be because the call to raise these flags has been made by the racist agitator, Tommy Robinson.

It makes me feel uncomfortable and I'm white. I can imagine it would feel much more uncomfortable if I wasn't.

The Union flag and the flag of St George are obviously not always used as racist symbols, but sometimes they are. How are people of colour supposed to know?

Half mast height obvs

Half mast height obvs

I thought you wanted it done properly?

Unless you are in mourning, obvs

I dont want anything done properly, im just taking the piss, the whole flag thig is stupid, from both sides.

whattheysay · 27/09/2025 20:13

Most English people never cared about flying the English flag before now so we know why they are suddenly so patriotic, however it is England and the flag should be flown if wanted. Tbh the more flags that go up the less controversial it would be and it would hopefully lose the whole racism connection

I was wondering Grin

It's hard to know these days who is serious and who is taking the piss.

Because it’s quite clear what the England flag represents at the moment and why people are putting them up

How do you know what the flag represents to other people?

In a local town we had them up for VJ day. Loads of people were announcing that they 'knew' they were right wing and were there to intimidate 'non-English' people, despite the fact that it had all been arranged with the British Legion ages before the current flag outbreak.

They wouldn't listen when they were told the real reason. Apparently they knew better.

I think it would look nice if it was all done in an orderly way (same height on each lamppost) an upside down Union Jack flag half way up a lamppost looks naff. Imo do it right or don't do it at all.

England flags in England make you feel unwelcome?

Yes, when they have been raised on request from a racist agitator and street thug.

OchreSnail · 27/09/2025 20:32

crazeekat · 26/09/2025 12:56

Because it is allowed! It is the flag of the country! If it makes you uncomfortable don’t be there. Your racist views are not welcome.

Do check your facts.

It's very obviously not allowed to hang flags (or anything else) on street furniture like streetlights, bridges, signs etc without permission, which I'm guessing is what the op is referring to.

Really? Do you know the person who hung the flags?

Check the fixture lists? Lots of St George's flags around HQ this afternoon and lots of Swing Low being sung, wonderful sight and sound. Whisper it, but many of the fans were 'of colour' and looked very happy.

If it is 'illegal' why were the Ukrainian flags not removed or the Hamas flags that seem to be de rigeur at the moment?

TwistyTurnip · 27/09/2025 21:02

bemoresloth · 27/09/2025 18:01

Are they hanging half mast on lampposts?

That’s not what’s bothering the OP, though, is it? She’s feeling triggered by the sight of our national flag on display everywhere. Which, to me, seems really odd - since when you’re in England, why be surprised to see an England flag? 🤷‍♀️

She is talking about flags on lamp posts everywhere, not those displayed properly

Whisper it, but most people don't live in liberal south west London.

Allthatshines1992 · 27/09/2025 20:48

Really? Do you know the person who hung the flags?

No. No-one does.

That's the point.

Maybe they are flying with good intent. Maybe they aren't.

But they are flying after a racist street thug has asked the nation to fly them.

Greenmouldycheese · 27/09/2025 22:01

If you are uncomfortable with the English flag then maybe you need to move? It's very normal for a country to fly their own flag. I live in Wales and see Welsh flags all the time. No big deal.

Yes, that's exactly the attitude the racists want you to take.

"If you don't like it here, maybe you should move."

Maybe you should consider why you share a position with the Tommy Robinsons of this world.

2Rebecca · 27/09/2025 22:15

The council = tax payer money and time. If you want to spend your time and money doing it off you go but I would rather mine went on education and social care

I've not seen Ukrainian or Palestinian (guessing that's what you mean 🙄) flags hanging on every lamppost - have you?

I've no problem seeing individuals, companies or government building flying flags from a flag pole.

When it's a bunch of shouting idiots messing about with a big ladder in the middle of a busy road, not so much.
