The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

fourfoxsakes · 26/09/2025 12:45

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

Removing paint from roundabouts and flags from lampposts will cost the Council money. Potholes won't be filled if there is no money

RubySquid · 27/09/2025 18:33

Who says it's only white people flying the flags. The only person I know who has put one up ( own property) is most definitely not white or born in UK but a British passport holder

Sticking one up properly, on your own property (or with permission from the property owner) is fine.

Tattered, greying flags cable-tied to lampposts at half-mast is undignified. It looks shit.

MushMonster · 27/09/2025 18:53

So let the council get on with filling up potholes and leave the flags alone.

I haven't hung any flags anywhere and never said I had What I said was we live in England we are entitled to have English flags, I didn't say people should go around hanging them on lampposts. Perhaps try reading what people say before you comment.

I apologise if you thought I meant you personally had hung flags when you haven’t - mostly my ‘you’ is the group ‘you’ though, not personal.
I rechecked your post - you said councils shouldn’t remove them, but councils would only remove those hung without permission on their property, seemed to me you were fine then with them being on lamp posts? Sorry if I had that wrong.
Nothing wrong with flags where they belong, and not on lampposts and roundabouts (as directed by racists) as per the legal view.

We’ve got lovely flags in our town, put up properly with permission from the council

did the VE celebrations last week , people hung flags from their houses, those with flag poles used those, we had a spit fire display while the military band played the dam busters music, kids had little plastic flags….i regretted getting rid of my plastic flags while decluttering

although it has literally just occurred to me that i might still have them….doh 😳

You absolute racist! 😂

Whammyyammy · 27/09/2025 18:59

Im currently in the u.s, as usual lots of stars and stripes flags on both state buildings and residential homes. Always respected the Americans for their patriotism.

A nations flag should always been flown in the its nation. But plesee let them not be upside down

It's not that I agree with them being on lampposts, it's about money. If they spend money on this they have less for things like repairing roads.
I don't know where you live but in my area the three closest councils are virtually bankrupt. They aren't going to see it as a priority.

Even if the flags create hazards for road users, obscure CCTV, road signs and compromise public safety?

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 26/09/2025 13:07

They're everywhere now, I saw an army Land-rover with a big one painted on it.

You are kidding aren't you??????

That is an old (1970's-1990's), ex-military Land Rover ambulance displaying the non-tactical red cross (that all military ambulances have to display).
The sides can be folded down so the red cross is hidden.

Used to drive one when I was in the reserves.

Well most councils are struggling yes.
It’s a range of local/county councils and highways agencies in charge of lamp posts but at least councils have made different decisions for different reasons - mostly reasonable reasons of themselves. I did notice a neighbouring Reform county council decided not to do so whilst their nearby non reform city council did decide to, so maybe politics are wrapped up in it.
Plus, and I keep mentioning it, a council worker in Salford got his ladder pulled away from him whilst halfway up a telegraph pole as the nice guy pulling thought he was removing a flag (he actually wasn’t but that’s by the by) - and I really wouldn’t want the workers in danger - though on the other hand this behaviour is abhorrent and should be addressed, but low key probably stops making people too angry and aggressive.

No, I already said upthread that obviously if dangerous, those to be removed.

So less money for potholes because idiots hung flags in dangerous positions.

MasterBeth · 27/09/2025 16:08

Why does the flag of the country you live in make you feel uncomfortable?

Because the campaign to fly them this summer en masse has been led by the racist agitator, Tommy Robinson.

Nothing to do with anyone supporting the England team in the Women's Rugby World Cup then?

We just won the World Cup today, by the way.

Union flags on lampposts?

Proper flag flying, sure

But they are not dangerous are they. They look quite nice IMO if put up properly (not the spray paint roundabouts obvs), my 6 year old loves them! if ppl start to remove them it just becomes tit for tat, and a civil war begins. The pride rainbow flags started overtaking years ago and everyone accepts that, no one angrily takes them down (despite maybe not agreeing)

I am not convinced there has been a sudden surge of patriotic support for women's rugby, no.

MN at its best!
What I said is to leave the flags alone, at least there is any issue with their location (some may block view, be too low, too close to traffic.. or so). Leave the others alone.
And get on with filling potholes, collecting the bins, fixing lights and so on.

Put up properly

Nobody is objecting to that (well some Reform councils do)

Half way up a lamppost or road sign is nothing like that

Hmm tbh I do live in an averagely affluent area so I guess its all done quite tastefully i can imagine its done badly in council estates etc!

Wait until they come undone and get torn in the weather and see if you still think they look great

Straightly. Clean fabric.

HopingForTheBest25 · 27/09/2025 19:50

English people have a right to display the English flag in England. HTH!

Still half mast?

And how long do they keep clean and straight?

bemoresloth · 27/09/2025 19:51

Neighbours need to draw up a rota to wash them and put them back up. The fabric should be a mix of 60% cotton and 40% polyester. A separate rota should be made to iron the flags to keep them straight. Imo x
