The council should be taking down England flags in public places?

I have driven through a couple of areas in the last few days where England flags are being displayed on public lamp posts, it makes me feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome in the area and I think gosh I’m glad I don’t live here, but why are the council not taking them down?

TBF we really are the mildest mannered people in the world! We've repeatedly voted for less immigration for decades and been ignored every time. So.much so that immigration has accelerated massively. Most countries would have eventually had huge riots or a revolution and overthrown the government. What do we do...fly our own flag in our own country 🤣. And we STILL get accused of being racist intolerant bigots!!🤣

Who has repeatedly voted for less immigration? Have you been voting BNP and National Front?

Palestinian flags and Ukrainian flags all fine. Scottish flags fine.

Just the England flag unacceptable. Can’t be demonstrating you support for England in England.

Yes this what annoys me. We live in England so why can't we have the English flag flying?
It's not down to the council to remove them. Most don't have the extra money or resources to fund anything more than the bare minimum. Like others said they'll be back up within an hour.

Flag England GIF by Wimbledon

I am so pleased to see the huge majority of people posting and voting disagree with you @fourfoxsakes 😆

Bit baffled that people are still posting about this though. Bit tedious now. 🙄

No way should the councils be taking England flags down! Would they do this in any other country? Would anyone expect them to? NO!

I have seen a few posters on here (on various threads) claiming they have been taking down England flags in their area that other people have been putting up.

I'm like 'yeah sure!' 😂

I mean, who the actual heck do they think they are that they have a right to do this? Most people would give you a short shrift, or laugh at you, and just put it back. (Although in reality, no-one is removing anyone else's England flags!) Grin

Be proud of your flag @fourfoxsakes like other countries are proud of theirs!

Yeah - and why did it take Tommy and his racist gang to remind you to do this?
And anyway you are not supposed to hang things on lampposts or telegraph poles - can’t even follow your own council’s/highways rules - why not? It’s not very ‘patriotic’ to break England’s rules surely?

Anyone has the "right" to clear away anyone else's fly-tipped litter. If you dumped an old fridge outside my house, I'd take it to the tip. If you string a flag up to a lamppost outside my house, I am perfectly within my rights to so the same.

People are, of course, free to fly flags from their own property. If they do it because a racist like Tommy Robinson told them, then they are being a bit of a cunt.

You don’t have to come on here and be bored - you could mute the thread.
Councils/Highways agencies probably should take them down from lamp posts as they’re a risk - and putting them up there is breaking the law - check gov.uk ‘Flying Flags’ - I’m going to post a pic but it probably will take a while - but hey nothing says patriotism like breaking English law.

get a grip OP, there should be more England flags flying in England.

as the song says…there’ll always be an England!!

Why would a flag make you uncomfortable? I stick mine up during football and I can’t imagine why it would upset anyone. 🙄

HeadsWinTailsLose · 27/09/2025 16:50

Not RTFT, it’s not the council’s responsibility. The onus to remove is the owner of the lamppost. In my town the company, Balfour are informed and they put it on their to do list, it’s not a priority for them but they do remove them eventually.

You realise that most lamp posts are either county council or Highways England property?

We live in England , I expect to see English flags … in Scotland I saw Scottish flags .

This.
However, I 100% don't want to see crosses spray painted onto road signs and disgusting slogans like "send them back home", which someone has painted on a road sign outside my estate sometime since I passed it yesterday.

I wrongly thought that each town had the same set up as where I live. I stand corrected. A quick google tells me that it can be the local council, highways, parish/town council, electricity network operators or a third party that the council has contracted maintenance and repairs to. Thank you for your input.

Anyone offended by the English flag can FO out of England? If I went to America I’d expect to see their flag… it’s the unhinged left that have tried to make people hate their own flag and heritage and are shitting their knickers that it has had the opposite effect.

America has a code about how the national flag should be displayed, so ensure that it retains its dignity. Some cheap polyester flags cable-tied at half-staff and getting increasingly tattered would not be considered acceptable in the US.

MushMonster · 27/09/2025 17:54

MidnightPatrol · 26/09/2025 12:52

I think it’s a bad precedent for councils to be obliged remove England flags, in England.

That’s giving in to the idea it’s just a ‘far right symbol’ of some sort.

Let’s be proud to be English. By reacting in panic and pulling them down, you only cement the idea the flag is a negative thing.

This.
Just leave the flags alone.

Do you feel the same about the Palestinian flags as well OP?

Debatable for sure - however I doubt everyone got the required legal permission to hang them up so there is that issue as well.

You know why it makes people feel unwelcome.
Why would you continue doing something that makes quite a lot of folk feel unwelcome whether they live, work or visit here?
It seems to me though that people really enjoy this part of the Robinson Raise the Colours op - more than they like celebrating being English/British - not a great look really.
No one has objected to flags already flown - nice flags at full mast on buildings.
I’ve just been abroad and seen flags around, but not on lampposts half mast, and no one told me it meant they didn’t really want foreigners there. It’s completely different.

No idknt know why it makes people feel unwelcome. Only on MN have I heard it being so. Asked a few friends and colleagues ( none originally from uk) and general consensus is they don't give a shit.

RubySquid · 27/09/2025 18:33

Onlyontuesday · 27/09/2025 07:26

Lots of wilful ignorance.

If you were on holiday in Barcelona and Spanish or Catalan flags went up immediately everywhere after a wave of protests about tourism you would be being dense to not feel uncomfortable. The people putting them up would want you to see the flag and feel unwelcome.

Yes it's an English flag in England, but intention matters, and the intention here is not patriotism. White nationalism is not British and it does not make me feel proud.

Who says it's only white people flying the flags. The only person I know who has put one up ( own property) is most definitely not white or born in UK but a British passport holder

Taking it up with the flag is not the solution in my view.
If tgey are obstructing the view in the road, hanging too low or otherwise dangerous, then ok, remove only those flags.
But otherwise, nope. Just leave them.
The council is meant to be filling up potholes, collecting the bins, sorting care, sorting street light and so on.

I am a foreigner.
And yes, all this talk about immigration does make me feel uncomfortable at times. But nothing wrong with that. I do see that UK, as any other country, needs to control immigration as it suits its needs, but with fairness.
The Union Flag or any of the other UK flags will never ever make me feel uncomfortable, ever. I love them. I do like seeing them. I do have tshirts with the union flag, which I love. I do want to see the patriotism in this country, because we all have a lot to say about the so many services we are paying for, but not getting much of them. I think those who paint flags inside potholes or on bin bags and hope for the council finally turning up do have a point, to be honest. We are all paying more taxes, yet getting less in return.

I haven't hung any flags anywhere and never said I had What I said was we live in England we are entitled to have English flags, I didn't say people should go around hanging them on lampposts. Perhaps try reading what people say before you comment.

It’s illegal without permission- how is that patriotic or ok?
Yes councils have enough to do - maybe if we stop doing illegal flag flying and graffiti on roundabouts they can focus on potholes again.

Do you see cheap Temu flags half mast on lamp posts in other countries?
